Stuart and the Ave

This week's Song of the Week is Stuart and the Ave. Please use this thread to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the song.

Stuart and the Ave was released on the album Insomniac on October 10, 1995. Insomniac reached a peak chart position of number 2, going platinum twice. The fascinating artwork for this album was created by Winston Smith and is entitled "God Told Me to Skin You Alive."

What IS it about this song? I simply love it, but I'm not sure I can explain why. How can a song with such negative words make me feel so happy? The parts that seem hugely satisfying to me are, "…ripping up my transfer and a photograph of you. You're a blur of my dead past and rotting existence - as I stand laughing on the corner of insignificance," "Before it might have made some sense, but now it's all fucked up," "Seasons change as well as minds," and especially "I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid enough to stay with you." Well, and of course, do I even need to mention the bass line? I adore it!

Amazing that Billie tried to sing this song live this year – but he didn't really get very far, did he?

Here's an audio of the song for your listening pleasure.

Stuart and the Ave Lyrics

Standing on the corner of

Stuart and the Avenue -

Ripping up my transfer

And a photograph of you.

You're a blur of my dead past and rotting existence,

As I stand laughing on the corner of insignificance

Destiny is dead

In the hands of bad luck.

Before it might have made some sense

But now it's all fucked up.

Seasons change as well as minds

And I'm a two faced clown

You're mommy's little nightmare

Driving daddy's car around

I'm beat down and half brain dead, the long lost king of fools.

I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid enough to stay with you.

Destiny is dead

In the hands of bad luck.

Before it might have made some sense

But now it's all fucked up.

Destiny is dead

In the hands of bad luck.

Before it might have made some sense

But now it's all fucked up.

We're all fucked up.

We're all fucked up.

Yes, as a matter of fact, of all the songs on Insomniac, it had the most votes :).

Out of curiosity, how do you actually decide what the SOTW is going to be? I know you said you count the votes, but as far as I can see from reading the choices in the thread to what actually becomes song of the week, there seems to be very little relation between the two.

Like, when do you start tallying votes? For instance, for next weeks SOTW, would you start counting the votes for all the songs that are mentioned from today-on?

This song rocks!

I laughed so hard when Billie tried singing it at MSG and he failed miserably. But then he went into Who Wrote Holden Caufield, so it wasn't so bad.

one of my favourite Green Day songs!

I stood right on the opposite corner of Stuart Ave.

I really like this song, not my favourite from Insomniac but it's still delightfully melodic and lyrically mind altering. I used to always mix it up with Westbound Sign though for some reason.

I know, I was like "Aww Billie, it's okay!"

Anyway, this is my favorite song from Insomniac. :)

I count the votes, and I also try to make sure that we don't have songs from the same album too close together and that we have a variety of types (i.e. not a bunch of ballads in a row or something). There's absolutely no guarantee that any song with a lot of votes will be it for this week. Obviously, we'll eventually work our way through all the songs, so I try to spread them out in various ways. And I might sometime put a song here that has no votes if it feels right.

However, most of the time, there is an obvious relation between the number of votes and the song chosen - I actually keep track in a spreadsheet. I've counted all the votes since the thread began (except when one person keeps voting for the same song 20 times in one week), and I let them accumulate. I figure if someone wants a particular song to be discussed, they're not going to change their mind just because we come to a new week.

It's not a contest to see which song is most popular each week. It's a discussion thread. I don't expect that everyone has to like every song and I'm interested to read how people feel about each one - whether it's positive or not.

So, are you trying to tell me something with these questions?

I still can't believe I heard part of this song life at MSG. I flipped out when I heard it because it has never been played before. It was the first and probably last time played live.

Opening bass line is scrumptious.

Great song. Insomniac is probably their 3rd best album.

The opening bass line on this song is pure Mike i love it!

i nearly crapped my pants when i heard billie sing the opening lines at MSG sadly they didn't play all of it :(

Great choice! This is one of the best songs from Insomniac, maybe the best one.

Oh, alright! And no, I wasn't trying to tell you something, I was genuinely curious. I've often wondered how exactly this worked out, since I personally have never seen much relation between the nominations thread and the actual song that was picked (with the exception of Whatsername). So thanks for letting me know! Please don't take offense by my questions

Between the yummy bass line and the powerful lyrics, it has to be one of my very favorites from Insomniac. I remember going to YouTube and watching the video of Billie attempting to sing it at MSG and being so excited that it kinda got played live.

And I always have an urge to pronounce the title "av", like how Jason says it in the PHGP song.

I don't listen to this one often, but I do really like it.

I'm not at all offended - I never mind anyone asking questions. It just sounded like yours might have a subtext and I'd want to know if they did.

So tell us how you feel about this song - I'd like to know. Keep in mind it's one of my favorites, and I'll come looking for you with a blunt instrument if I'm not happy with your answer !!!

I recently noticed that's the only way I've been saying it lately. I think I'm okay with that.

This is one song I haven't listened to much. I love the bass line and the lyrics.

Brilliant song. It makes me happy too, more so because I can relate to it most of the time.

I love the lyrics so much.

Oh gosh, I love this song so much! Especially that bass line =D And I was just listening to this on the bus home from uni, about an hour ago :D Nice timing hehe.

I know exactly what you mean! This song always makes me bounce around and go smiley, and then I stop and think about the lyrics and I'm all "hmmm :/"

Actually, I do that with most of Insomniac...

I always loved the line "destiny is dead in the hands of bad luck"

This song is awesome!

Thanks for the post J'net

Gah! The bass line in this song owns.

Lyrically, I'm pretty indifferent to it though.

Honestly I always skip this song on my iPod because I've never fully listened to it.

I've done that in the past with so many Green Day songs, and then when I randomly fall in love with them I'm always like "whyyy?" :/

I vote you take it being Song Of The Week as an opportunity to actually listen to it in full now :P just because it's awesome and you never know, you might just love it ;)
