Green Day's next album

Yo guys,

I was thinking, it might be cool to have a bit of a discussion on what we think Green Day's next album will be like. Yes, I know they only just released one and it is too early to know what will happen. But we can still be imaginative.

What do you direction do you reckon the next album will take, musically?

I believe that GD have kind of gotten themself in a bit of a tough spot. The last two albums have been 'epics' so to speak, as opposed to the earlier albums which contained songs with similar basic themes (although not linked in some kind of story). If they decide to take a step back and go back to their roots, releasing an album full of simplistic punk rock songs ala Dookie it would no doubt be loved by Green Day 'fans', however I feel that it would probably be considered a failure by critics and the wider mainstream audience considering the highs of the previous 2 albums, especially American Idiot. This being said, while American Idiot was an amazing album which was a huge commercial success and made GD one of the biggest bands in the world, 21CBD really did not have the same effect. It's had a few songs in the charts and reasonable reviews (and most importantly well-recieved by fans), but the album as a whole really doesn't have the 'this is freaking awesone' effect, at least not with me.

If I was to guess what direction they will take, I would say they might release a power-pop album. Not saying I necessarily want this to happen, but I could see them releasing an album with a lot more keyboard and with some synthesisers as well. It would most likely contain a ballad as well (eg. TOYL, WMUWSE, 21 Guns).

And another thing I was thinking about... which songs off 21CBD do you think will played on the tour that will support the next album? Considering how few are being played on the current tour I would have to think only 21 Guns and KYE, possibly EJN and 21CBD?

idk with american idiot and 21st CB it just seems that there is really nothing to continue on from these albums. well at least i cant envision any new album after 21st cb right now. its feels like we are reaching an end to green day, and i dont like that

Only the bolded ones are regulars being played at every show. And SOTC is more of a 'segment' than a song as such.

green day will only finish if one of them dies or they break up. hopefully neither of those will happen soon.

No. Green Day will keep making music forever, it's what they do. They've said so themselves.

There is no end until they die or something. We are stuck with them for now.

As much as i love the old stuff i think it would be a shame if they went back to there roots because in my opinion there really really on to something right now. American idiot was an amazing album 21cb was an amazing album if they keep moving foward imagine how amazing the next album would be if they kept moving foward? Sure they can go back to there roots and i would love it but i wouldn't help thinking what could they have done if they made another epic album.

on the other hand going back to there roots would be just as good i dont know what to think im so used to the epic scale of there songs now i think i would have to get used to them playing new straight up punk songs again.

To be fair though, most people didn't think they could top AI, and then they came out with 21CB so y'know... anything could happen. IMO it doesn;t matter if the critics don't like it cause to be honest they're pretty much at the stage where they can do whatever they want now.

I don't really think this is gonna be open long. Its way to early to discuss this.

No one knows what it will be like, thats the great thing about Green Day, they surprise us with every album. So we will just have to wait and see.

I agree with you. I would prefer an album like insomniac, but I can't imagine green day doing that at the age of 40. And if it is, it will be a bad record. I think they will produce a record like the last one, but with more pop songs/riffs. On tour, I'd say they would play KYE, 21stCB, 21 guns, The Static Age.

I kinda hope their next album will be less "epic" than AI or 21stCB. I'd like an ordinary one like Warning or something. But I'll be happy with anything they do
