Found a pretty insightful article, http://musicouch.com/genres/rock/green-day-and-politics/.

Basically in a nutshell the author describes how green day went from being a legitimate punk rock band, to becoming nothing but political trash!

I some what agree with him/her , but I still listen and buy all their new music.

What are your thoughts?

 Where to begin? My thoughts are that the article is trash.

That was insigthful?

Almost every page of Gimme Something Better talks about the political aspects of punk music that flowed through the Bay Area... so it's not ok for Green Day to be political? And they walked away from the truly political aspects of the East Bay movement back in the day, when they went to Reprise.

I tell ya, either they are sell outs to the Man or sell outs to the other Man... people really need to make up their minds. Can't have it both ways.

yeah, the guy / girl does seem overly bashful.. I still like greenday

I'm just saying that this argument is the same one... and even I made a similar argument when I wrote about the American Idiot musical on my blog, that it was a bit too commercial for my taste, even though I liked it. Everyone wants to them stay the way they were or not grow. But then again, I'm a new school fan, someone who fell in love with the music AFTER they 'grew up' and went backwards in time... so what do I know? :)

Green Day really can't get a break, and I don't think that they have lost all of their old fan base. I think. I guess. I hope!

i think i could probably dissect every sentence of that article, but im too tired.

OK normally i dont really care what people think of green day because not everyone in the world is going to like everything.. So if people dont like green day then you know what thats cool..

However this guy bascially shat on a piece of paper and posted it on the internet.. He has no fucking clue what he is talking about it.

Firstly he says that Green Day "talk about subjects that punk rockers could honestly care less about." does this guy actually know what punk rock is..

Secondly he is saying green day is selling about because they are writing about politics. :ermm: yes that makes sense, writing an album about something you about and taking a risk not knowing that if it will do well commercially as opposed to making an album that will sell millions of copies but has no substance, THAT IS SELLING OUT!!!!!

And thirdly "from a time when they actually knew how to make music, when they used to rock the stage live, and CARE about their fans" WTF?????????????????

and lastly "they have lost most if not all of their original fan base, that consisted of people who loved to rock!" AGAIN WTF?????????????????? i would like a show of hands of how many old school green day fans are here.. :)

Like i said i dont mind people critiquing green day but at least know what you are talking about before shitting it out..

Yeah I always thought punk music and politics pretty much walk hand in hand with each other. Maybe I was misinformed.

The article is completely rubbish.

nope... you're not the one, for sure! I guess the guy never heard of the Clash or Sex Pistols... now THERE's some 'non-political" punk music...

Allow me! No, really, it's good practise for my English degree...

From being a hardcore, punk rock band that...

Hardcore? When have Green Day ever been hardcore? Didn't they get laughed at at first because they had melodies and were quite poppy in comparison to their contemporaries?

That’s right, I said it! Green day used to be one of the most influential punk rock bands to date, from the days of Dookie and Kerplunk , from a time when they actually knew how to make music, when they used to rock the stage live, and CARE about their fans…

Can't argue with that really except the 'used to' section. And the caring about the fans part... and the knowing about how to make music part...

… to becoming nothing but sell-outs, who talk about subjects that punk rockers could honestly care less about.

Dead Kennedys... Black Flag... Bad Religion... NOFX... All punk, all political. I'm probably missing a ton of bands, but these four are the ones that spring to mind immediately.

While Green Day has been more successful with their last two albums ( American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown ) , they have lost most if not all of their original fan base, that consisted of people who loved to rock!

Actually I think they lost rather a large portion of their 'original' fanbase when they 'sold out' to a major label.

Everyone has political views, EVERYONE, but the time and place for that is no way in hell found in punk rock music,

Lol. Ok, let's all point and laugh at the ignorant wanker.

So, when will it be enough Green Day? When will you wake up and realise not many people care about your views on politics?

Not wanting to get involved in American politics with my ignorant Britishness, but do you think they voted for the other guy? Just screams bitterness to me.

^ you said it better than i did.. oh well there will always still be idiots, i guess it gives Green Day stuff to talk about :)

This is true... Green Day has never lost touch with their fans... I think they try to stay more connected to us... especially when they play live at arena shows.. that guy just needs to squash it

That was so ridiculous it nearly made me laugh. I can't even find one valid point in that article.

 This idiot thinking that punk rock isn't political currently holds the title for Most Hilariously Stupid Thing I've Heard This Week. The only good thing I can say about this article is that it's short so I only wasted valuable seconds reading it.

Writer needs to realise bands change espically when their carrer spans over 21 years. Its what bands do to keep challenging themselves. All the greatest bands have change from album to album, thats why they are the great bands.

I believe Green Days music on the last two albums would have gained new fans no matter what the lyrical content was about. The standard of music alone was raised a few notches, thats not dissing their previous albums either.

For one a lot of classic punk bands made political statements in their music.

And besides; No band stays exactly same forever especially when they've been around so long! they gotta start to experiment eventually. It's not like they can write about the same things they did at 18, they've grown, it's a ridiculous expectation. Even if they did write the way they did before, the critics would be saying "they never do anything new, they need to act thier age, blahblah" you can never win with those people.

Trash article.

That was seriously the biggest load of shit I have ever read. Green Day still rock, and they still care about their fans. There isn't one decent point in that article.

Fuck Green Day. What a bunch of sellouts.

No but seriously this dude has issues.

when they used to rock the stage live, and CARE about their fans… to becoming nothing but sell-outs, who talk about subjects that punk rockers could honestly care less about.

Okay so to even suggest that Green Day don't care about their fans anymore is ridiculous. Green Day have always cared about their fans, that's what basically motivates them to put on such kick ass live shows which are engaging. The very fact that they choose to be so engaging seperates them from alot of other live acts. They don't want to disappoint fans who have paid to see them live and therefore, put every ounce of energy they have into their performances.

Everyone has political views, EVERYONE, but the time and place for that is no way in hell found in punk rock music, EVERY single song Green Day has made lately has been politically motivated, and while that’s all fine and dandy to them, they are just proving to their original fans that they are nothing but sell outs.

Punk and politics are constitutive of one another so this 'article' has no credibility. Also, I really don't think Green Day have anything to prove to anyone. They are just doing what they love regardless of how many fans they have gained or lost. God forbid an artist writes music with substance, something that is innovative and relevant at the same time.

Fuck I hate people who use the 'sell out' argument. It's so pathetic. There's nothing wrong with being successful and writing music that makes people think. Also, I don't believe American Idiot was the first time Green Day conveyed political messages in their music. Warning was pretty political IMO.

Oh Gosh, this is trash, really.

And the most disappointing result of articles like this is that people actually believe in what the reviewer says.

I had an argument via Twitter  2 days ago about the same subject, with a guy that was saying: "I don't like GD any more because ever since american idiot they've been making vaguely political generic radio rock vs. the heartfelt punk of the old GD" What's wrong with people? The answers are 2, or they didn't really listen to Gd, and so their opinions are merely biased, or they have always misunderstood what Green Day are.
