Guest Shangri-La Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 This could probably go in the At The Library section but then no one would see it. "The Profound, Progressive, and Occasionally Pointless History of Bay Area Punk from Dead Kennedys to Green Day." I just finished reading it and it's fantastic! It's compiled entirely of oral histories and excerpts by everyone still alive who had an impact on the east bay scene, especially in the late 80s-early 90s, with a forward by Jesse Michaels of opiv. You can read sections of it on the website http://gimmesomethingbetter.com/excerpts like this gem: "The first time i dropped acid i was playing second guitar for Blatz and was just freaking out. I kept saying, "I don't think I can play." And Aaron was saying, "You're going to be fine." So we ended up playing Gilman and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. There was hardly anybody there except local people and our friends. I remember looking down at my guitar and the strings were just going this way and that way. I looked over at Robert, becuse he was doing the same thing, and he said, "I know, I know!" Billie Joe Armstrong Also found this article about it in the East Bay Express. Green Day is mentioned. http://www.eastbayexpress.com/eastbay/punk...ent?oid=1371507
GDM Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 This is a great book, I finished it a bit ago. Thanks for posting this, Zoe! Larry Livermore is going to be at Bluestockings Bookstore here in NYC on December 9th at 7PM to talk about the book. It's a $5 suggested donation. I'll be going if anyone here wants to come with me.

Guest Shangri-La Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 woah larry livermores gonna be in new york? with Aaron Cometbus? ugh my dad wont let me fucking go they both live in brooklyn... wow thank you! Billie wrote that book? ok..probably no...I'm confused a little bit..excuse me for that no. There is a book called "Please Kill Me" about first wave 70s punk where different people who were a part of the scene share stories about the time. This book is done in the exact same way but it's about the East Bay punk scene.
GDM Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 wow thank you! Billie wrote that book? ok..probably no...I'm confused a little bit..excuse me for that No, two authors wrote the book from about 300 hours worth of oral histories with many people from the East Bay. Think of it as "Please Kill Me" for a later Punk crowd from the Bay and not early from New York...

Sarahnade. Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I heard about this book, and went in Borders a few days ago to see if I could find it or anything else Green Day related, and I found it! The only copy that was there. I didn't have any money, though. The price was $18.00. I'm going to ask for it for Christmas, and I hope it's still there. I read through some of it and I loved seeing so many familiar names. Billie, of course, and the members of Op Ivy was awesome; I really love them. At one part, Billie was talking about making a record with some band, I can't remember who, and he said "My wife was totally pregnant. The day after we finished the album, she went into labor, so those were the sounds we heard when we were in the basement," or something along those lines. I thought it was funny. But, yeah, I really want to read this! And everyone seems to think it's amazing, so I really hope to grab it soon.
Anja Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 Sounds like a great book! I'm still not done with the Gilman book but I think as soon as I am, I will try and get that one from somewhere! Thanks for posting Z.
GDM Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 I'm reading London's Burning : True Adventures on the Front Lines of Punk, 1976-1977 right now. Haven't picked up the Gilman book yet. I heard about this book, and went in Borders a few days ago to see if I could find it or anything else Green Day related, and I found it! The only copy that was there. I didn't have any money, though. The price was $18.00. I'm going to ask for it for Christmas, and I hope it's still there. You might be able to get it cheaper on Amazon. I think I paid like $12 or something when it first came out... not sure of the price, though.
Anja Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 The only reason why it takes me so long to finish the Gilman book (as well as all the other 14636 books I took home from my stay in the US) is because they are in english I've been reading the english version of "The catcher in the rye" for months now I can totally recommend Eggplants "Anthology" though. It's a great compilation of his fanzines and includes stuff from Billie Joe.
