Sunshine2385 Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I started a topic on NimrodStreet.com here.Basically geeks are starting to say that Green Day does NOT deserve to take the AmericanIdiot.com domain because somebody already owns it. However the only thing there right now is a whole bunch of ads. Alternative rock band Green Day has filed for arbitration to get the AmericanIdiot.com domain name. The timing of its arbitration request is not coincidental. The domain name changed ownership earlier this year to a Quebec address. Previous parking pages showed ads for Green Day tickets, but the current one is generic and focuses on the “American” aspect of the domain name. The case should be resolved within a couple months.
GDM Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 There's also the argument that Green Day should have bought the domain years ago but that they don't bother to keep up their Internet presence like they should. I predict they pay a lot of money to get it back and that will be the end of it. But it's going to be a lot of money!
Sunshine2385 Posted November 25, 2009 Author Posted November 25, 2009 That may be an argument that they're trying to push, but if GD is suppose to buy a name for everything they may ever use then they will complain about how green day is sitting on a whole bunch of domains and they'll be the bad guys. They always find a way to be right. I say GO GREEN DAY!
Harinezumi Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I'm pretty sure that they would think twice before trying to take it, if it belonged to a fansite (not just something with ads on it). Now it doesn't really matter. They're gonna buy it from the owner and that's it.

Now it doesn't really matter. They're gonna buy it from the owner and that's it.I'm pretty confident that they want it because the American Idiot show is going to Broadway shortly. They already own the copyright to the album name (and Billie would presumably also be the co-owner of the copyright to the play since he's the co-author of the stageplay).....so if you've got some joker who bought the domain after AI's release (WHOIS indicates that the DNS record for the site was created on 28-Sep-2008) the argument could be made that the domain name infringes on an existing copyright.....and if that's what the ICANN arbitration concludes, the 'squatter will lose the registration and Green Day, Mike Mayer, and Billie Joe won't have to pay them a plug nickel for it.
Moxy Crimefighter Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I love it when Nerds get angry over something petty.
BIBARAGURORIA Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I love it when Nerds get angry over something petty.Oy! I'm a nerd, and I think that Green Day should be able to get the domain, what with AI being set for Broadway and all...Unless "nerd" is some sort of acronym for members of a certain site, or something?

I've never really paid attention to that kind of stuff, but I guess you're right.

I didn't know about all these details, but I know that this isn't the first time something like this has happened. About 10 years ago, there was a dispute between Madonna and someone who owned the domain madonna.com and was using it as something that had absolutely nothing to do with her and she was able to win the domain name. If Madonna won, I'm positive Green Day will also win this.
Marie_GD Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 They have the domain names of all the songs on 21st CB, where all you have are the lyrics and the artwork in the background. I find it funny how some of them have hifens, and that the website without the hifens are weird things and sometimes even porn!

I find it funny how some of them have hifens, and that the website without the hifens are weird things and sometimes even porn! Hahaha I know! I made the mistake of forgetting the hyphens in KYE once and my friend walked in, it was awkward explaining why i had porno links up there Anyways, i'm sure Green Day will win this in the end. Especially because the site owning it now is just ads, and not anything personal or important.
alaniluau Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 The nerds will have to buck up and get over it.
captain peroxide Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 I love it when Nerds get angry over something petty. When do nerds get angry over something that isn't petty? It's the fucking internet
Isabel Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Why can't they just use ImericanAdiot.com as the website name? It sounds better.
Whatsername1533 Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Why fight Green Day is gonna win no matter what.
