Green Day "Offensive"

Okay, so I was in chapel today at school, and the priest comes in and is like "I heard this song on the radio the other day, and I found it very offensive, I'm going to play it and you see what you think" and then it turns out the song is American Idiot. So I'm like "What the fuck?" and when the song finished the priest was like "Now put your hand up if you found that offensive" and nobody put their hand up. So then he's said "I'm going to play it again, so take a closer listen." So he plays the song again, and asked the question again, and of course nobody put their hand up. So then he asks "Well, who likes this song?" so I put my hand up, and then the priest was like, "Right come up the front". So I go up the front and he asks me "Why do you like this song?" and I said "Because its catchy and has good lyrics" and then he gets all into a speech about what a disgrace the song was and how the people who made it should be grateful for what they have and everything, and he got really angry at me because I like the song. I was so annoyed. I mean, he really should look at the deeper meaning of a song before he gets all offended and everything.

Why didn't he like the song? Language? The meaning behind it?

Both, he said the meaning and language were a disgrace.

Well if you're in Australia I really don't see why the hell he would be offended over the meaning. Unless he was trying to equate Americans being pissed at their government during the Bush era to being ungrateful. Which would make no sense, actually, because unless he was here he doesn't know what it was like..

And the language.. okay, I'll give him that. He's a priest. He's probably not going to like cussing too much.

Either way it kind of sucks he chose to teach a morality lesson using a Green Day song. There's a lot of other shit out there he could use.

Maybe he could talk about the immorality of religious folk persecuting gays? Somehow I doubt that would ever happen though... lol

funny, 'cause I know a priest who actually knows about and likes Green Day!!

Kind of strange he picks out that song. Why wasn't he offended by "East Jesus Nowhere"? I'm going to assume he hasn't heard it. Hah.

I actually have a good deal of respect for some Priests. It takes a lot to give up your life to God. I'm personally an atheist, but I find something honorable in devoting your life to something you believe so strongly in. Obviously Priest are not immune to the "human factor" - that is, there is an asshole in all walks of life.

As far as a Priest being offended, I'm pretty sure most folks that are devoted to God - would find swear words offensive. Why is that shocking?

I'm glad I go to a public school.

We used to sing Green Day songs in choir when I was in Primary School.

I don't see why an Aussie should be offended by this song.

Singing Green Day songs in choir? Holy shit that's the best way I could've spent my school days. I went to an all girls Christian school and we sang religious hymns.

well, I guess he had a right to be offended. I went to a Catholic school for 3 years, and I guess I'm used to seeing a priest as a human being, we're all going to disagree with something at some point, the swearing well that's a given, but I guess he should have thought about the meaning a little more, but that was his interpretation

Well it was kinda more of a "Glee" type group with really bad dancing and singing.

Both teacher's that were taking the group couldn't sing or dance.

But yeah, we got to choose the songs and there were quite a few Green Day songs.

did you sing good riddance?

had to sing it for 5th grade graduation and then again for 7th grade chorus!

im not too sure why the priest was offended though.

If it was about language that completely understandable.

The song is controversial in themes. So I don't know why anyone would be shocked that someone is offended by it - let a lone a priest. Obviously most of us agree with the theme of the song, and don't find it the least controversial.

Good Riddance was like everyone's graduation song.

My sister is 9 years older than me and it was her graduation song too.

I'm proud of the kids at your school for sticking up for GD and not finding them offensive.

Yes it's controversial and it's supposed to be, but I don't get why he had to bring it up. There are a bunch of other stuff that's more important than a song. There's no need to make people feel stupid for liking a song. I know if something like that happened when I was in school it would have been considered out of place.

I would've found it more amusing than anything else though.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. He didn't have to yell at me in front of 300 people for liking a song.

I'm so glad I never had to go to religious schools. My older brother did, but by the time I came around, my mom was out of money and a little less enforcing of our religion. Sunday school is all I had to attend and I liked it! We got Cinnamon Toast Crunch damn it!

What a load of BS.

If you're offended by a song on the radio, turn the freaking thing off FFS!

Besides there is far more offensive songs on the radio than American Idiot IMO.

If I ever met that douche, I'd tell him where to stick his holy chalice...

Why does the church have such a problem with people standing up for their beliefs when they differ from theirs?

You have so got to give him a copy of East Jesus Nowhere for Christmas!

Something tells me my sexual orientation would be deemed offensive by your priest. The moral (pardon the pun) of the story is: who gives a fuck what your priest thinks?

At least you got to listen to American Idiot Twice in class :D
