JakeThompson Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 Alright so last night, through a discussion on Twitter with Kerrie (@eerienite or Kleptomaniac here on the GDC), this glorious idea was born. It started with me talking about how I just needed about $700 to fly out to California for that free show on the 23rd. I have family in Thousand Oaks, CA so all I'd need to worry about is the airfare. Well since this idea was more of a pipe dream than practical, I started thinking about something else. What if I bought a used van through Craigslist or something, picked up some local east coast Green Day fans, and took a road trip out to Berkley, CA? Google Maps said it would take about a day and 20 hours from my home address to Gilman itself. I'm thinking I could get a van here, then go to a few states on this coast to pick up some fans (especially from the GDC) then heading out west. We could even go have a group lunch at Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe. Since this trip would be totally unofficial or "independent" I think it would be cool to promote the GDA/GDC along the way. I'm thinking an awesome paint job on the van, as well as like getting a bunch of bumper stickers and stuff to pass out along the way. I'm not trying to ask for a sponsorship from the GDA or anything like that. Just want to represent I'm dead serious about doing this trip. I think it would be some of the best times I, and anyone who participates, will have. I know that there needs to be a LOT more planning and even more saving involved. I start work in February, so I'll probably be saving up for at least two years. I don't like asking people for money, so I'm not sure how much a seat in the van should cost for gas, etc. I know there are some awesome people here who I hope want to collaborate and help plan this thing. I realize that we all have lives full of responsibilities and this may kind of seem like a far-fetched idea, but I think we could make it happen... someday. So what do you guys think?EDIT: The title of this thread was supposed to be "The GDA Green Day Roots Tour of 20??"
ad0lfpiffler Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 i dont even kno what you're talkin about
JakeThompson Posted November 8, 2009 Author Posted November 8, 2009 i dont even kno what you're talkin aboutI'm talking about getting a bunch of Green Day fans piled into a van and driving out to California. To the club/venue where Green Day first really first started, Gilman St.And just visiting the East Bay area of California in general.
Nobody_Likes_You Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 I honestly like your idea, but I'm in Germany -.-
JakeThompson Posted November 8, 2009 Author Posted November 8, 2009 I honestly like your idea, but I'm in Germany -.-Yeah, I know there are lots of international folks here, which is awesome. But even with a cross country trip, it's gonna be expensive and take time to plan, so I really have no clue where to start for a multi-national trip. Maybe one day.
Nobody_Likes_You Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 Wasn't meant that way I'm gonna do a trip like yours one day, that's kinda like a dream for me
*Jade_Green_Day* Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 Wow this plan sounds great. I'd definitely go I lived in CA. I hope you get to do your plan.
JakeThompson Posted November 8, 2009 Author Posted November 8, 2009 Nobody... Go for it!Jade... Thanks, me too!

You should def swing by ohio and get me!! lol i help pay for gas!!! lolAwesome idea!!! You should def swing by ohio and get me!! lol i help pay for gas!!! lol
JakeThompson Posted November 9, 2009 Author Posted November 9, 2009 Awesome idea!!! You should def swing by ohio and get me!! lol i help pay for gas!!! lolOhio is a little farther north than I was thinking, but perhaps. Depends on how long of a trip this will be and how many people are going. We'll have to get a motel along the way, and another in Cali for a couple nights, and one on the way back.
Blu Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 It's going to take you more than 2 days. 1) You'll need to make stops in general, even if you don't pick up people. (Gas, food, bathrooms, etc). 2) If you pick up people, that's even more stops. 3) If you pick up people, that adds more round about travel. 4) Sleep. There are other factors. I'd plan on it taking 3-4 days, at least. Your profile says Florida. So I'm guessing Florida to NorCal? Yeah, you'll need more than 2 days.

I don't want to spend too much time collecting people, maybe two days at most before driving out to Cali. I know we'll have to make plenty of pit stops along the way. This is all part of why I wanted to put this idea out there, for feedback like this. All the planning help I can get the better.

My family travels a lot. I'd go but I have no money at the moment. I also noticed your from Kissimmee. I used to live in St. Cloud the next town over then we moved to Groveland (idk if you know where that is. About 45 minutes away.)

That's a lot more work and time and resources. Though it would give opportunity to more people to join your trip.
LilPunky Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I honestly like your idea, but I'm in Germany -.-^^Only that I'm in 'shittier' country - Slovakia :/

So I guess I've got to find the right ratio of people to travel so it breaks even. With the kind of van I have in mind, I'm thinking that there wouldn't be more than like 12 - 15 people. Unless somebody else wants to use their van or get one and we can carpool. But that also adds more cost and time to the equation as well. Hmmm...
Rae'n'shine Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I love your idea! I live in the lower part of Idaho, which would be on your way to California. The trip from where I live to L.A is about 13-15 hours by car. I was actually just thinking about how I would get to that show, since it's so close to me. For one crazy moment, I was thinking about running and I would get there in time if I left right now. PM me if this is a total and completely realistic plan. I would do anything to be able to go to this show!

This idea started from me wanting to get out to see the free show on the 23rd, but since I can't do that, I thought it would be cool to do a road trip to the area where Green Day formed. I don't know when this trip will happen, but I'm sure it's a couple years down the road, since there's still lots of planning and saving up money involved.

I don't think I read through your whole introduction That's still pretty badass. I'm up for that whenever it happens.
Sister of Grace Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 this sounds like a kick ass idea. you should get your van over to europe and do the same thing here
