J'net Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 This week's Song of the Week is Uptight. Please use this thread to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the song. I chose this song not only because of the number of votes it's had, but because you've all made me feel Uptight while talking about how you're Waiting for a particular song of the week! You've even started calling me names like Jackass, and now I'm feeling like The Grouch. So, I'm Warning you, you're Stuck With Me, and you're just going to have to Hold On a little while longer. But trust me, you won't be Waiting much longer. How much longer? No One Knows! Oh ... well I know . Uptight was released on the album, Nimrod, in October 1997. Nimrod reached #10 on the charts and went double-platinum. Leaving aside the meaning behind the song, what I really love about this one is the way Billie Joe plays around with words and phrases in its lyrics - things like: "woke up on the wrong side of the floor," "broke my engagement with myself," "perfect picture of bad health," "new start on a dead end road," "peaked out on reaching new lows," etc. These lines always delight me every time I hear this song! I was unable to find a video or audio for Uptight (except covers and one that has the pitch altered and doesn't sound right. So, I'm just going to hope that you all have Uptight on a CD or mp3 player or, better yet, a vinyl so you can listen to it and discuss here . However, if anyone can find a good audio or video, please go ahead and link us to it here. Uptight Lyrics I woke up on the wrong side of the floor. Made - made my way through the front door. Broke my engagement with myself. Perfect picture of bad health, Another notch scratched on my belt. The future just ain't what it used to be. I got a new start on a dead end road. Peaked - peaked out on reaching new lows, Owed - I paid off all my debts to myself. Perfect picture of bad health, Another notch scratched on my belt. The future's in my living room. Uptight, I'm a nag with a gun, All night, suicide's last call. I've been uptight all night. I'm a son of a gun <repeat chorus> ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can nominate songs for discussion as Song of the Week in the Song Discussions thread, which contains links to each previous Song of the Week from 9/14/2009 forward in its original post.

TAR Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Excellent choice, it's one of those songs only true Green Day fans know about, yet it's so good everyone should here it.
Lauren Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Oh wow, you're funny, J'net. Just kidding. I love Uptight.
Kaddi. Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Yay, it's finally the song of the week! Uptight is one of my favorite Green Day songs ever... it always reminds me of the night after the Live 8 concerts when my parents had this huge fight and I listened to Uptight on my Discman, because I didn't wanna hear them fighting. Although it reminds me of this, I still love it...

04rebhop Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 It's not a song that i usually listen to out of choice, but i often forget how good a song this is. I just love the first three lines of this song.

IscoredWaddlesgoals Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Yay for picking this one It's such an overlooked song, I wish they'd play it live. Is there a particular reason as to why not ?
GDM Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Thanks, J'net, I was wondering what I going to listen to on my lunch break, and this is a great idea. I love this song. I like the juxtaposition of the boppy sound with the contradictory/opposite land lyrics, too. Maybe a sign is in order for London to pretend like they'd actually play it! haha... Thanks again.
