MusicGrl1986 Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 So Napster created a tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11 and GD was on the list with Wake Me Up When September Ends. I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this and found it kind of odd, especially since Billie Joe wrote the song about his father and not the events of 9/11. And if this topic has already been posted, please feel free to close it. I did do a search, but I couldn’t find anything like it.
dolce Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Well, even though Billie wrote it for his father, he wrote it in a way that could be open to interpretation to the listeners. So no, I don't think it's odd.
.Militza. Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 Everybody interpreted the song like it's for 9/11 victims. Why would that be odd?
MusicGrl1986 Posted September 13, 2009 Author Posted September 13, 2009 Everybody interpreted the song like it's for 9/11 victims. Why would that be odd?Well, I didn’t mean it necessarily as “odd” but more as that so people many assume that he wrote it about 9/11 until they learn that he really wrote it about his father passing away.
The Disappearing Boy Posted September 13, 2009 Posted September 13, 2009 yeah, i think it was kinda intended as a tribute to the 9/11 victims as well.
Lauren Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Well, 9/11 was in September so the song kind of fits.
Supermodel*Robot Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Though it was written about his dad, it has long been interpreted as a 9/11 song. The music video is war-themed as well, which adds to the theme.
mrwhirly2000 Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Well, 9/11 was in September so the song kind of fits. haha exactly... it's also track number 11
Tiffx Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 haha exactly... it's also track number 11Oh wow I never thought about that.... Very interesting. but yes the song is open to interpretation, everyone can relate to it in some way.

Nikki_Nimrod Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 haha exactly... it's also track number 11Whoa, I never actually thought about it like that!It doesn't surprise me they were used in the tribute. That's nice they were included.
steelthorne Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 uggghh!!! I fucking hate it when people think that song is about 9/11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Well, 9/11 was in September so the song kind of fits. please stop. fuck that. i think it's an insult to Billie's father's memory to say it's a 9/11 reference to be honest.
Boston Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 I thought that Green Day would be hated and avoided on 9/11.
Starred Thoughts Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 I actually never thought about WMUWSE and 9/11 together until I read this thread. Not really odd to put it in a tribute, yes Billie wrote it for his father, but everyone can interpret a song for themselves.
Moxy Crimefighter Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 It was kind of on there 9th album too 1 10392 Kerplunk3 Dookie4 Insomniac5 Nimrod6 Warning7 International Superhits8 Shinanagins9 American Idiot I smell a conspiracy theory a brewin' haha exactly... it's also track number 11
ChelseaDagger Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 It was kind of on there 9th album too 1 10392 Kerplunk3 Dookie4 Insomniac5 Nimrod6 Warning7 International Superhits8 Shinanagins9 American Idiot Wooooooooah crazy! 9th album, 11th track. I never would have picked that out.
woven_basketcase Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 uggghh!!! I fucking hate it when people think that song is about 9/11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Um, no.I like that the song was included in the tribute. Even though the song wasn't about it, it fits it really well.
Alan86 Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Wooooooooah crazy! 9th album, 11th track. I never would have picked that out.Well i wonder if that was intended. They do like to put double meaning in their songs.
Hermione Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 uggghh!!! I fucking hate it when people think that song is about 9/11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!please stop. fuck that. i think it's an insult to Billie's father's memory to say it's a 9/11 reference to be honest. If that's an insult to his father's memory, why would Billie allow the music video to be about a soldier going to war in Iraq? Songs can have a wide range of meanings and he clearly intended it to be open to interpretation, not black and white. He wrote a deeply personal song in such a way that everyone can relate to it differently and draw their own meanings from it. It's very fitting as a September 11th tribute.
Eirik Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 It was kind of on there 9th album too 1 10392 Kerplunk3 Dookie4 Insomniac5 Nimrod6 Warning7 International Superhits8 Shinanagins9 American Idiot Eehh, yeah, nooo. If you're gonna count both studio albums and compilations, you have to add 39/Smooth as well...
Alan86 Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Eehh, yeah, nooo. If you're gonna count both studio albums and compilations, you have to add 39/Smooth as well... Is that not the first one i said. I just typed 1039, but that is 1039 smooth
Katarina. Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Like said already, the song is open for interpretation. So no, I don't think it's odd.I've never looked at the song being about 9/11 though..
Samantha Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Not everyone on the planet is going to know why Billie Joe wrote the song or what it's aboutSo I'm pretty sure as a majority we can let this one slide through
ShadowWolf Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Aye, as many others have said before...It really is the interepretation, what the listener draws from it. I mean, all music is complex interpretation, of emotions, of events, of life. If people hear it and think of Billie's father, or of a passed loved one, that's fine. If they think of 9/11 or some other interpretation, then that's just fine and dandy too. When you write a song, it's 50% of what you put into it, and 50% of what others draw from it.Okay, serious moment over, I needs me some more coffee...
