Hellcat Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I have done a search but no results came up, so feel free to lock this if there is already a thread for this and i cant find.I was thinking if i could ask Green Day a question it would be the following."Do you think that if you kept the name Sweet Children and released the exact same albums, would Green Day be as big as it is now"the question kinda contradicts itself because i believe the opportunity they have had have reflected their songs and albums.for example Dookie being HUGE and they come out with Insomniac as kinda the more bratty punk album.Discussalso provide me with a link and lock if theirs already a thread mods.
fashionvictim86 Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Hrmm....you know I never thought about that before. I don't know....I know they don't like their name "Green Day" for some reason, BUT I think they would hate it even more if it was "Sweet Children" now when they are almost 40. I mean, nowadays, they really don't wanna be viewed as just a bunch of punk kids.I do think they would be just as successful as they are now though.Mods, leave this open. It'd be pretty interesting to see what everyone else thinks about this question.
Sarahnade. Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I love the song 'Sweet Children' but I never thought it made a good band name, and I'm glad the boys realized that. Like Courtney said, it would be odd if they kept the name since they are all almost 40. I think if they kept the name, it would drive them crazy and people wouldn't take them as seriously. Yet, 'Green Day' isn't a lot better, since it means smoking pot all day. STILL. I think Green Day is better.Billie has said they "went from one bad name to another," but I don't mind Green Day. I don't know how Mike or Tre feel about the name, but Billie seems to dislike it. The name was great for them Dookie era because they seemed to be about pot, sex, and other "punk" things, but, now when they are older and trying to come of age and be more serious, the name might be an annoying burden in a way.On the other hand, the name lets them hold onto their past and help them stay youthful in a way, so I prefer Green Day over Sweet Children, and I'm sure Green Day do to. Would they be as successful if they didn't change their name? I think people would still respect their music, but people wouldn't be into the name, I think. I wouldn't, at least.
Sharmellow Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Yeah, I do think if they kept their old band name, Sweet Children, they would be successful. After all, it's the music that makes a band successful, not the band name. (Unless under certain circumstances...) And I prefer Green Day over Sweet Children. Sweet Children makes me think of candy brands to be honest.
Hellcat Posted August 21, 2009 Author Posted August 21, 2009 I know green day is code name for smoking pot all day. but I often talk about music at work and nobody picks up on the pot reference in Green Day.they just think its the colour green and day haha

Or they think they are eco-friendly or something.
Bohemian+Scandal Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Yeah, I think they would have had the same exact amount of success. The music would be the same. A lot of huge bands have names that are way more lame than Sweet Children and made it despite that. The Killers are a good example. I prefer Green Day of course because when I first heard it it made no sense to me and even now it's somewhat obscure sounding even though I know what it really means. I like band names like that. Not so blatant, but not so deep. Just random. Like Nickleback. Lol.
Guest Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Haha. Or they think they are eco-friendly or something. LOL like two days ago my enviromental science teacher saw the picture of billie i had in my binder and asked who it was, and i told him i went to a green day concert over the summer and then he was like, "oh, is that because they're eco friendly?" and i was just like i dont know...and then people started talking about how it was about smoking poti'm sure they would still be successful, but sweet children was a terrible name and i'm glad they changed it.

I would've been like, "YEAH. SURE. ECO-FRIENDLY. AAAAHA. YUP. THATS GREEN DAY."And I would've showed him one of their NRDC videos just to keep it up.
Juan Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 no clue. We can't possibly presume they would've even released the albums they released too.
GDM Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I've always liked very green days, so I dig the name. It is much better than Sweet Children.I wonder what either the band or Billie would rather be called? Besides late for dinner or surely. (sorry, bad pun.)
madie Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Of course they would. The music would still be the same so I don't see how the name would affect their success.
Break of Day Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I think they should have kept it as Sweet Children. They made their best material as Sweet Children, and maybe if they hadn't changed the name, they would have never changed and lost their punk roots. I think Green Day is just as good of a band name, though. I actually don't think they would have had as much success, because I think people wouldn't have taken "Sweet Children" as seriously as "Green Day".
Isabel Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I'm glad they changed the name from Sweet Children. It's just like how each of the albums transitioned into something different...they each became more serious and mature. I'd say they knew they couldn't keep up a name like Sweet Children forever, it would have been a totally contradictory name when they woke up one day in their mid 20's.
Foxboro Hot Tubs Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I don't think it would make any difference when it comes to success ...but do middle-aged men want to be in a band called "Sweet Children"?? I don't think so.They said, that they hate the name "Green Day" but I'm pretty sure that they would hate the name "Sweet Children" even more ..It's a great name for a bunch of kids playing little punk rock shows... but it would be really unsuitable now
.Militza. Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I think they haven't become so popular because of the name, it's because of the music. And frankly, they aren't sweet CHILDREN anymore, so it would sound ridiculous.
emmaILGD! Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I'm glad they changed their name. Green Day just sounds better to me, but it definitely wouldn't effect the actual music if they were still Sweet Children.
LetItBeHappy Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 lots of people wouldn't listen to them xD i mean, if a friend tell me "HEY, LISTEN TO SWEET CHILDREN!" i wouldn't because the name is too disney-ish... And I concur with courtney.... Imagine see Billie in a interview, in a few years...Question: Why are you called Sweet Children?BJ: 'Cause many, many, many, MANY years ago it seemed like a good idea... I TOLD YOU IT WASN'T, MIKE!!!
NowhereBound Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Hrmm....you know I never thought about that before. forget_me_nots Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Question: Why are you called Sweet Children?BJ: 'Cause many, many, many, MANY years ago it seemed like a good idea... I TOLD YOU IT WASN'T, MIKE!!!Haha, yes, I see this happening if they kept their name Sweet Children. But I mean, I have no idea if they'd be as popular, but if their name wasn't Green Day, they surely wouldn't stand for the people and ideal they stood for in the Dookie era, and I think this would have affected their popularity to an extent.
rage-love-life Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I like the name Green Day better, so I'm glad it's changed. And plus, they aren't children anymore.
Hermione Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 It's funny because Green Day seems to be just as random a name as Sweet Children, I don't think much thought went into it. I suppose they could've ended up with any of the names they gave themselves as teenagers, just happened to be Green Day by chance. What was it Billie said, "We have the worst name in rock" , even the band themselves admit it was very random. But I love that they have such a silly, fun name as Green Day, it fits them perfectly.Hmm, I think if they were called Sweet Children, it wouldn't be the fact they they weren't called Green Day that was the problem. It would be that Sweet Children is such a horrible name! I think it would've put me right off if I'd never heard them.
Brian Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Sweet Children seems like one of those underground punk band names. and I don't think that it would be as popular in the modern age with the newer albums. It just doesn't fit. But what do i know?
