GDM Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I saw this this morning and thought I'd post a link here. I searched to see if it had already been posted. http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2009-08-20/...n-civilization/
MascaraTears Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 err... that's a tad bit depressing but interesting article anyway, cool find!
GDM Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 It is a tad depressing, I agree with that. The guy is pretty much saying that music stopped after Dookie. But in that regard, he might be right. It's also a bit depressing that he's so down on today's kids. But the movie he mentions, Idiocracy, is hysterical. I saw it last week in Austin, where it was filmed. Very funny. Anyway, back to work for me. Later.
Starred Thoughts Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Definitely an interesting read. I can't offer any perspective since I was only 3 in 1994, but interesting things to think about.
GDM Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 Definitely an interesting read. I can't offer any perspective since I was only 3 in 1994, but interesting things to think about. If I remember correctly, 1994 sucked. I was 30. Particularly after Cobain died. Everyone I knew was in complete and utter shock for weeks afterward. It was horrible
Hermione Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 That was really interesting. I have to say, there's so many things I enjoy from 1994 or thereabouts, I think he could have a point . I've always thought 1994 was the peak for rap music, no question.
Clockwise Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I love Idiocracy, but that would be one scary world.
GDM Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 That OutKast album he mentions (the one that is impossible to spell) is phenomenal from that year. There are just a few rap acts that I appreciate, and Outkast is one of them. And yes, Idiocracy... very scary!
Sharmellow Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Sadly, humans are getting dumber.Omg, haha. It's hilarious and insulting...but it's totally true. Happily, however, Green Day has continued on, releasing several classic records in the years since. They could do a three-hour set at U.S. Airways Center without playing a bad song. No, they've never topped Dookie, but no one else has, either. And, if I'm right, no one ever will.I'm not 100% sure I agree with that statement, but I agree with mostly everything else. Interesting article. Thanks for posting.
Devan Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 I think they've topped Dookie three millionfold.They did it in 1995, 1997, 2000, 2004, and 2009 (and1992 if we're counting backwards..) :whistling:
Clockwise Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 The not topping Dookie comment is pretty ridiculous.
Nikki_Nimrod Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Wow, that was extremely interesting. Thanks for posting!
Leisha-LUNA Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 The not topping Dookie comment makes me grin Whether you agree with it or not, the thought makes me very happy indeed, gives me chills even. I liked that article, bit depressing, but a good read nonetheless.
GDM Posted August 21, 2009 Author Posted August 21, 2009 I disagree with him completely.Yeah, right! I've been trying to think and write about this article, but it's kinda messed up. On one hand he's saying that kids are dumb today and that the peak of popular culture happened in '94 with the death of Cobain. But if '94 is when he's saying that popular culture peaked and Green Day took over the banner in a way, from Cobain, then it can be argued a bit that Green Day helped to bring down popular culture. It's kind of a circular argument, but so is his argument. It's a really weird article. Me thinks he may like Dookie a bit too much. haha. But it would have been cool to see them in '94. Very cool.Truthfully, I love Dookie, but I think Green Day topped that album with American Idiot, but I think Green Day causes a bit of a generation split. There's 20th century Green Day and then there's 21st Century Green Day. Almost two distinct bands but the same people. I first really started listening to them in the 21st century. I'm a 21st century listener. OK, I can go off on tangents sometimes.Hitman, what do you disagree with?
