chelsey Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Them featuring Van Morrison is an album I came across with a track called "Gloria" -- if you haven't heard it before here's a link:http://beemp3.com/download.php?file=2875202&song=GloriaI thought it was interesting cause I know Billie said in an interview that they listened to a lot of old albums while writing 21CB, and it might have been where Billie got the inspiration for Gloria. =)Anyone else know of this already??? Thanks.
Lauren Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 He got Gloria because, like Christian... it's a religious name.
chelsey Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 He got Gloria because, like Christian... it's a religious name.Ohh... hm. I wasn't aware Gloria was a religious name.Oh but if you actually listen to Morrison's song he says Gloria a lot like BJ says it in Horseshoes&Handgrenades.... so yeah.
madie Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 This is what I first thought of when I saw the tracklist.
Chelsea Hotel Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Van Morrison's Gloria is also a good old fashioned garage-rock song--it sounds a lot like a FHT song.
mad hatter. Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 He got Gloria because, like Christian... it's a religious name.Gloria is religious?
Raychul Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I recently watched an interview that I thought was very interesting and they were all talking about how some of those songs were really old and they re-wrote them and 'Gloria' was originally called 'Emily'. I thought that was a nice little factoid.
persons Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 He got Gloria because, like Christian... it's a religious name.wow, i didn't know gloria was a religious name.

I thought that was a nice little factoid.oh yeah! i think i heard that somewhere also.i'm kinda glad it wasn't "emily" because there's this song by From First To Last called Emily and that would have just been..... EH.So yay Gloria!
Jack96 Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Gloria is religious?I was gonna ask the same thing.
Raychul Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 oh yeah! i think i heard that somewhere also.i'm kinda glad it wasn't "emily" because there's this song by From First To Last called Emily and that would have just been..... EH.So yay Gloria! I know right! Oh jeez, no offense to From First To Last but that would've totally killed the song. "Smiles and her laughter!!" So angry.
Noe_ur_ennemy Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Yeah that was my firt thought christian is a religious name and gloria is a religious name too!! there's the link!!Gloria .... Glory... glory of god and religion!!I do singing lessons and I sing a lot of religious song and there alway or almost the name Gloria. And for the inspiration of Billie, I think that could be true !! you're right chelsey! the way that Morrison sing G-L-O-R-I-A is so similiar of when it's billie sing it in H&H!!
Teenage Kicks! Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 LMFAO He didn't pick The name gloria cause it was religious name. It's not XDHe picked cause he likes that name and because it's kinda like GLORY ya know?[/offtopic] Edit: The young lady above me might have just taught me something.I stand corrected. Gloria is sorta a religious name?
mad hatter. Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I don't think Gloria has anything to do with religion, guys. But then again, I'm the farthest thing from religious, so...But I remember Billie saying something about liking Gloria because it could be turned into Glory, and he liked Christian because it could be taken as the religion, too. I don't believe he chose Gloria based on religious purposes.
Noe_ur_ennemy Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I don't really understand your question.. if it was one!(I'm french!!)But I can tell you Gloria is a religious name!!I study in music so... BJ may has not pick this name for the ''religious'' side of the thing but with christian(religious name) This makes a link between the 2 character!! (offtopic)--- in your pic and you signature.... YOU ARE SO LUCKY!!!
germangirl94 Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Gloria isn't a religious name. Gloria is Latin and it means something like glory and fame...
Juliette Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Gloria is one of the 5 sections of the Roman Catholic Lithurgy (Gloria in excelsis deo), which features in mass. So yes it has religious links.
.Militza. Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Gloria is not religious name, Christian is the name of a religion. Not GloriaHe said( Billie Joe), he wanted to use this specific name because it means Glory- fame on some language, I can't really remember, and fame has two sides, the bright one , what Gloria was before her addiction, and the dark side which takes over her, when she admits she has a drug addiction
Tubbie Head Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Gloria is religious?no.. I don't think so.. Gloria means Glory.. so it's kind of a double meaning too.. "GLORIA.. Where are you Gloria?"
NickD Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Gloria is a VERY religious name. I would almost say, in a Christian Mass, the name/word Gloria comes up more than "Jesus" does.I would say the name "Gloria" is about as religious in the Roman Catholic and Christian religions as the name "Mary" is. From 12 years of religion classes and going to church, Gloria is VERY religious. Many people named Gloria are done so because of their religious parents.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_in_Excelsis_Deo. It's Wiki, but it still stands in truth.
*withoutadoubt* Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Like a lot of the things Billie Joe writes, the word Gloria, I'm sure, has many meanings to it, and is open to your own interpretation as well. That's one of the things that's so great about this music; it can relate to so many people because of the way you interpret it. I agree tho, that the name Gloria has religious ties.
Jaymee!! Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 I remember Billie specifically saying that he chose Gloria because it's like 'Glory', which is a religious aspect. Why has this turned more into a discussion about whether the name Gloria is religious rather than the original topic, which was the possible origin of deciding to go with that name?
chelsey Posted August 16, 2009 Author Posted August 16, 2009 Yeah.... this topic wasn't originally set out to see if Gloria is a religious name. I could have googled that. But yeah... whoever said this -- Gloria is not religious name, Christian is the name of a religion. Not GloriaHe said( Billie Joe), he wanted to use this specific name because it means Glory- fame on some language, I can't really remember, and fame has two sides, the bright one , what Gloria was before her addiction, and the dark side which takes over her, when she admits she has a drug addiction"I also learned something That makes a lot of sense.
