greendaytone Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Is it possible to request a song at a Green Day arena show? We all know they take requests in smaller shows, so i'm thinking of embarking on a quest to get a song played at one of these shows!Where? Well, i'm going out to see Green Day in America this time next week. I'm seeing them in New York, and then in Miami for a 2nd time, so i'm thinking at one of those shows. Failing that, perhaps Rocktober!Which song? I'm thinking A Quick One While He's Away, The Who cover that they released as an itunes bonus track. They played this on The Foxboro Hot Tubs tour last year, and i understand that they are playing it in their soundchecks on this tour. How? A big massive sign! This will be the hard part, and where fellow GDCers could get involved perhaps. The sign might not even have to be that big, just big enough for them to see with the song name!It would be a bit of a long shot, but could be awesome if pulled off! What d'ya think?
amy_runs Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I think if you got enough people to scream it, it could happen
lobob92345 Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I think if you got enough people to scream it, it could happen I agree... get a big posse together at each of the shows and get them to yell out the song request at a designated time or something. Dream big, it could happen.
Nova-Caine Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I love the idea Tony, you know how much I want to hear this song but signs/banners are not allowed in Arena's in the UK, I don't know about the States, its for health and safety and fire reasons, I always see people getting them taken off them at the door, even if they do manage to sneak them inside security normally takes them away pretty quick.I am sure we can come up with something for Rocktober, I wanna hear them do this song so bad, I grew up with it x

Sharmellow Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 That's a great idea. I don't know if banners are allowed, but like some people said before, just get a huge group of people and tell them to shout it out.
Nova-Caine Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 If we get close enough, we could have one sheet of A4 paper each with one letter of each word of the song lol Or we could just ask him for 'A Quick One' to save on paper

Nova-Caine Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I like it it! But... he might get the wrong (or right!) idea! Darn you think so? Actually I think the cards might work, laminated A4 cards We just have to make sure we're all in the right order.
Jaymee!! Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 People last night had signs requesting songs, but the security just took them away once they were on the floor.I'm sure if you were close enough, and with enough of you together all screaming the same thing, Billie would definitely listen
Brian Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 That would be soo cool to hear them play that! I love that cover!
J'net Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 If you want to make a sign/banner, I think I have a great and very effective method. I used it at Bowery and Webster. There is no doubt that all of the band members (except the 3 J's) saw my sign, because they all interacted with me about it. It's also easy to get past security ... you can stick it in your pocket until the right moment. Get a big, white plastic kitchen rubbish bag that hasn't yet been shaken out (so it's still folded/rolled and stuck together). Lay it out flat and cut it into the size you want. When you cut it, it works best to leave the bottom seam and both side seams intact. That way, you have a double thickness, which makes it easier to read, but it won't fall apart when you try to unfold it.Get the largest black sharpie you can find and write your song title on it (A Quick One will work better than the whole title, because you can write it a lot bigger in the same amount of space). Let it sit out for a while until it's dry and a casual rubbing of your finger across it doesn't smear it.Then just fold it up, stick it in your pocket and take it out at the right time. But be sure you don't hold it up until you've got it facing the right way, etc. - you may only have a short time before security spots it and takes it away.Choosing the right time to take out your sign is the most critical part of this whole venture. You must take it out and hold it up so that Billie can see it before security sees it. Billie is the one who will decide whether to play it or not, so it has to be him. You have to watch carefully to make that happen. I'll leave it up to you to figure that part out . ALSO, you need to show it to Billie at the right time - during the part of the show where they play their older stuff. I think that's the only part where you'll have a chance of getting them to do a request. ALSO, getting a lot of people around you to point to it and yell will help. Now, I've told you everything I know, grasshopper, the rest is up to you .BTW, in case you're wondering, my sign at both shows said "Don't Wanna Fall in Love." This was a request from several people. At both shows, all the guys looked at it multiple times (except I don't think Mike saw it at Webster). At Bowery, Mike and Tre saw it first. Tre just laughed, and Mike pointed at me and mouthed, "You don't? Are you sure?" and laughed. When Billie saw it, he smiled and just kind of shook his head slightly. I think they probably haven't played it recently enough to be sure of the words or whatever. But you know that's not the case with your request, so go for it, and GOOD LUCK!
toaster_poodle Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 With all due respect to your quest, I don't think A Quick One is the best choice...it's just not really logical, you know? Even though FHT played it and they've been doing it at soundcheck (I didn't know that, but I'll take your word for it) it's still kind of a big thing to ask, especially because they're not actually taking requests at these shows. I think you'd have much better luck with Paper Lanterns or something along those lines. If you do pull it off though and they play A Quick One in it's entirety, that would be beyond epic. Godspeed.

The request would just be the icing on the cake. So why not go for your favorite?
emmaILGD! Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 This sounds like a brilliant idea, I'd love to try it, but unfortunately I don't see how the band are gonna see my sign from high up in the arena :/
greendaytone Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 Thanks for the tips J'net, sounds like the way to go to me!And yeah, maybe that song is not the best choice especially as most fans prob don't know it.
Anja Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I love the idea Tony, you know how much I want to hear this song but signs/banners are not allowed in Arena's in the UK.They aren´t? :/ I plan on bringing a flag with me. It´s just a piece of fabric so I don´t think it is a danger in any way to people.I like your idea a lot, Tony. And I think it could actually work if you get enough people to support you. I liked the banner idea cause if it´s a really big one they just can´t overlook it I hope you will get your chance.
greendaytone Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 My favourite song is Static Age right now, but i don't think i'll have to request that one!It would certainly be 2nd half of the show to do that, that's where there seems to be soom room for flexibility in the set.
Nova-Caine Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 You want to hear it Tony, I want to hear it, I know a lot of people we are going with in Rocktober want to hear it so lets do it then x
Kaddi. Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I really like the idea. I'm not sure, but I think in one of the recent concert threads, somebody said that he/she also had a banner with a request (I forgot which song it was) and GD saw it and played it. So I think it could work
greendaytone Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 You want to hear it Tony, I want to hear it, I know a lot of people we are going with in Rocktober want to hear it so lets do it then xExcellent - agreed!
iLozza! Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Sounds like a great idea! You could also push it a little bit as well and request a few other songs as well, just to see what happens. Good luck with it!
rage-love-life Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I think if you got enough people to scream it, it could happen Do this, or also take some of J'net's tips.
