Thanks for pointing this out. But I don't know any Spanish except for the menu at Taco Bell. And I still can't even get that right! (Total kudos to anybody who gets that TV show reference.)

TRANSLATION:

Interview with billie joe armstrong, mike dirnt and tre cool.

How can it be that a happy punk band that wrote songs about masturbation gets to the stadiums and manages to put together a nation filled with uncomformity?

When you released american idiot, did you feel any kind of fear regarding the reaction people could have?

Billie: yes , but it came out fine. whit every record you cant help thinking people will believe you lost your mind, that youre doing something well or that are nuts. the idea of releasing a song that is 7/8 minutes long is kinda scarry, but if youre scared, is because youre doing something well.

You released it, won several grammy awards, toured around the world, sold zillions of copies ¿you think american idiot sets a standar? ¿ do you feel the pressure?

Billie: with every record you always feel some pressure. thats the hard part, how you face it. thre is definitely a lot of pressure on this one. ¿how are we gonna top ourselves? you gotta have lots of patience, cause the process takes time. But that fear is what keeps the fire alive.

Did you have some kind of bouch or did you have an entire economic freedom to do the record you wanted?

Billie: thats part of the pressure. with an entire economic freedom a lot of doors open, there are a lot of directions you may take

Mike. but we could take the time we wanted and have fun on the process, long ago we only worried about writing good songs, nothing else mattered, thats how it is when youre 20 , you tell yourself 'just write good songs'... you do not realize how hard that actually is. now it is only about figuring out what it is being a musician and going every direction you possibly can

In 21st cb there are two characters: Christian and Gloria. ¿what happens to them throughout the record?

Billie: there isn’t a history, it could be a romantic couple but what it really is is the 2 sides of the album, like being esquizofrenic. Gloria is the good side, living, growing, and getting old. Holding on to your beliefs and the punk rock side. Christian is self destruction, living under your own rules and facing your demons, he’s the kind of guy who likes burning it all down. So the record is about places to meditate, there’s a lot of symbolism, more of that than a real story.

East Jesus Nowhere is about religion

Mike: Billie and I went to church and it was kinda funny, so many contradictions, like passing the hat to put the money in it, we don’t see that often. Being around all that, that’s what we mean with ‘know your enemy’

What got your attention? It is an angry song…

Mike. Is just about the hypocrisy, there’s more hypocrisy in religion than anywhere else in the planet.

Billie: you have all those excess surrounding you,, it makes you think about your own humility, or something like that, people uses religion as a tool to get power, to play God, it happened during the George bush times, with the terrorists. You see it everywhere, we just want to invite people to question things, it’s ok to doubt.

21stcb is divided in 3 acts ¿how did you plan that?

Billie. last summer we got together with butch vig and started recrding demos, thats when we started analizing the lyrics and we found the concept, lots of lyrics, lots of concepts, we realized we were talking about heroes and villians, saints, lucky charms , etc. so much material and we wanted to make it more simple. so we did three parts, almost like three separate eps , that together hold the meaning of the 21st century breakdown

Did you know from the strart you wanted to do that?

mike: there was no initial plan. we just knew something was gonna come to our heads by itself

' kye' gave us the idea and '21stcb' started the trip thats on the record.

and things evolved from there...

billie: yeah, and there were other things like the foxboro hot tubs, we did that to clear our minds and have fun. in some concerts, i really thought we could have kept up with that forever

tre : of course, we would have died of a liber disease by the end of the year...

:) i love that last part, ill keep up later

i find it weird that you take a break of recording an album, recording another album

billie: weird, stupid. we like to have fun and doing our thing

tre: and we cheated on ourselves! :P

do you think that the time period between the end of the recording and the release is weird?

mike.. we had like 8 rehearsals or so and we were like ' i cant do this, i cant keep just rehearsing' so we booked a couple of dates in a couple of tiny places, that was fun

billie: its a fact that you can lose it while you wait for a record to come out, so we thought ' lets lose it with our fans, lets do this'

Muchas gracias!

muchos de nadas :D

Youve been a band for 15-20 years do you see yourselves like bowie or the who? Do you think about green days legacy?

Mike: We havent given it a thought

Billie: we wanna be ambitious, we dont know what our ambitions are, we cant define them but not so long ago we played infront of 60 thousand people in england and it was great, i also love playing like in the dna lounge, i wanna try everything, everytime. Playing for people who likes our music. If that means being the biggest band on the planet, then bring it on. Im ready to go anywhere as long as the music takes me there

Mike: our ambitions as a band are at a creative level, we wanna be the biggest band in the world, but in a different way, entering throung the back door, not saying 'were the biggest band in the world', and then we have the fht, people hears it and say 'it sounds like green day'
