Mum and I were listening to their new album 21st Century Breakdown, and when we listened to 'Last Night on Earth' mum pointed out that Billie sounded like John Lennon from the Beatles.

Do you agree that their new album has a Beatles touch to it?

Kinda funny you mentioned that. "Last Night On Earth" which is my 2nd favorite song on 21stcb reminds me of John Lennon's "Real Love" a little bit, especially the non-beatle versions on the Imagine soundtrack and/or John Lennon Anthology.

Well some critics pointed that out. I thought I read somewhere, maybe in Q magazine or Spin, that they thought LNOE has a 'John Lennon' feel to it. Something like that.

Personally I don't know. Haven't listened to the Beatles that much. (But from what I have heard, I don't think so.)

I must be stupid, I can't see the correlation between Billie and John

Possibly why I just can't really delve deep into this album.

Maybe in the song cxalled Last Night on the Eart, he could sing like John Lennon but I don't think that he could sing like Lennon, their ways of singing are different

I wouldn't have thought they sounded similar at all :/

Not really but now that you mention it I'll try to listen for that similarity, if I hear it at all.

I can hear where there is Lennon/Beatles influence maybe...but as far as Billie's voice sounding like Lennon's? I don't really think so.

Hmmm, I never noticed it before.

I'll have to go listen to it again.

But Lennon has such a unique singing technique and so does Billie, and off the top of my head, I don't see how they would be the same.

people say so, but I don't really see it, and I am a really die hard Beatles fan

Billie did say lNOE is like John lennon's woman's twin, but

I must be stupid, I can't see the correlation between Billie and John

you are not the only one

My mom said that 'Last Night On Eath' and '21 Guns' sound like beatles songs.

And as she likes the beatles I think it's not a bad thing, but I personnlay can't see the '21Guns-Beatles' thing.

i don't know about 'last night on earth' though... I'm not much of a Beatles fan and I know only a handfull of their songs but GD themselves said that the Beatles were an influence and inspiration for them, so there could be similarities.

I can hear that they have a Beatles influence but I also hear The Who, The Beach Boys (Static Age more specifically) and Queen. But as a die hard Beatles fan and Green Day, Billie doesn't sound that much like John to me.

Restless Heart Syndrome is the song that most reminds me of the Beatles. Especially the beginning. Billie's voice, the piano, and the guitar in the background, definitely.

Hey! my mum said that too! haha!

I think Billie has is own sweet sound. His voice doesn't sound like anyone i've ever heard.

Last Night On Earth does sound like it could've been a John Lennon song, but I don't think him and Billie sound alike.

My mum pointed this out too, I think it sounds somewhat similar, but not an awful lot.

I don't really hear much of a similarity. But, I'm not that keen on similarities, so it may just be me.

Funny you brought this up.

Y'know after my mom and I saw Heart Like A Hand Grenade she thought they sounded a little bit like the Beatles, and that was like BEFORE we heard 21st Century Breakdown and when they were still recording American Idiot. And then when it came out we listened to Last Night on Earth and she was like, "It sounds like the song Woman from John Lennon".

Interesting.

And then she said they way Green Day treats each other like best friends and they way they acted reminded her of the Beatles too.

I don't think they have a whole LOT of similarities though. Maybe some here and there I've noticed, but it just seems like a different music style. I dunno.

At times but for the majority of the time not.

When I first heard LNOE, I thought "This is the moment when John Lennon lifts his head from his ashes and says 'Hey, shouldn't I have written this back in the seventies?'"

There's not so much a similarity with the Beatles, but more specifically with the way John Lennnon wrote his love songs as a solo artist. And it's not that Billie's voice sounds like Lennon's, but that both of them have the same knack for unsentimental singing. When they sing emotional songs their voices sound sober, natural and honest and thus avoid that the songs come over as corny or too mellow.

Anyways, there are quite some Green Day songs that remind me of the Beatles, like Words I Might Have Ate, Pulling Teeth, Worry Rock, Extraordinary Girl, just to name a few. The Beatles' influence on Green Day's songwriting is more than evident.

they're getting into more of what the beatles did, but not their sound.

it's hard to explain...

in other words, they don't sound like the beatles, but they're exploring like the beatles did?

ugh. i hate words. lol.

EDIT: You guys are wrong. While it might sound similar to John's voice, I think Paul would write a song like LNOE, not John.
