J'net Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 When Billie was asked about Last of the American Girls, he said:“I started writing it for my wife, but there’s elements of Hurricane Katrina and [pro-cycling protestors] Critical Mass. It adds those elements to one character who has this left-wing strength.”Share your thoughts about this song in this thread.
greendaytone Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Great to see the song threads coming out J'net! This song stood out on the first listen to me. Good tune which reminds me a bit of 'Extroadinary Girl'
badwolf Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 ^ It reminded me of Extroardinary Girl, too.I love both, though. Beautiful songs.
Nova-Caine Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 It's one of the few GD songs you can actually dance to. I love it.
SlappyDJ1 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Its a good song. Not my favorite but every song on the album is awesome.
Princess Consuela Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 It reminds me of Whatsername more than Extraordinary Girl.
Clayish Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Probably my least favorite on the album, but still GREAT!Very Whatsername.
Clockwise Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I didn't know what to think of it at first, but now I really like it. I love the lyrics.
Ila Reto Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 This is basically the girl i've always wanted to be, but never could. it's like Shes a Rebel but better <3 the song itself to me is ironic, how it tells of how strong she is and then goes into Murder City where she's completely worn out. The whole album's a tragedy.
Haydée Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I don't like this song. :/I get tired of it before the first "She's the last of the American girls''if the lyrics were good, the ''uuuuuh'' like at 1:10 would be nice for a sad song.
music_that_is Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 The character in this song is like my idol, the person I've been doing my best to be.The first time I read the lyrics I felt kinda proud.
J'net Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 I like the fact that "she won't cooperate" and "she's a natural disaster" but the song is obviously a positive one about Gloria. But, it's also got the double meaning about Hurricane Katrina that makes it very interesting. Listening to the song and picking out those references is fascinating to me.
bjrules Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I love the chorus for this song. It always gets stuck in my head for some reason
Bohemian+Scandal Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 This is the only song on the album I don't really like. Musically I find it boring, and lyrically, well, I don't know. The lyrics, just seem so generic and there's not much going on in them...Even with the bit of reference to HK... That normally doesn't bother me if it's just simple and catchy, but I don't find it that appealing to the ears. XDI much prefer Whatsername and Extraordinary Girl to this one.
amy_runs Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 It reminds me of Whatsername more than Extraordinary Girl.I agree. And this song has a special place in my heart. I love it, as I do Whatsername.
Hayley Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I love this song, it's one of my favorites off the album
murderotica Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 kinda reminded me of one of Muse songs, but in a good way.
tapdancingowl Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Hmm, I don't like or dislike this song either way. It's just kind of there. It doesn't do much for me.
Bastard of 1967 Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 When Billie was asked about Last of the American Girls, he said:“I started writing it for my wife, but there’s elements of Hurricane Katrina and [pro-cycling protestors] Critical Mass. It adds those elements to one character who has this left-wing strength.”Share your thoughts about this song in this thread. Thanks - now I know what the reference to "She is riding a bike/Like a fugitive of Critical Mass" is all about. This song is a bit schizophrenic in my opinion -- on the one hand, it's exalting the best qualities of the Gloria character: commitment, dedication to the cause, inspiring others, the one willing to give the finger to the establishment at the drop of a hat, etc., while at the same time it's also pointing out the futility of her efforts ("She wears an overcoat/for the coming of the nuclear winter"; "She's on a hunger strike/For the ones who won't make it for dinner"), and then there's the metaphor equating her to "a natural disaster." Talk about a back-handed compliment!
No.One.Knows Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Like most of the songs on the album, this one kind of gets better with each listen for me. I think it's a great song, not my favorite on the album but often overlooked.
RedGreenBlue Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 LOTAG is definitely my favorite song on the albumand I really like the solo. It's so simple yet it's verymelodic and it sounds great!!!
