Rezurgam Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 So, I've been waiting for a take on 21CB from someone from my school for some time. The issue of the newspaper was released today. It appears frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is running out of things about: politics, anti-war, and corruption caused by the media. But I guess you can't expect him to write about cannabis and boredom for the rest of his life. The one-minute "Song of the Century" intrduces the album by summing up Armstrong's stand-point of the 21st century: an era of static, panic, and prosperity. He continues to rant about the world's flaws in "21st Century Breakdown" and "The Static Age." "Last Night On Earth," which is a love ballad, is different from the rest of the album. The ballad is driven by soft piano riffs and generic love lyrics, but it is a nice break from the band's [political side. Some of the songs take a while to get used to, but I found most of them to be favorable, despite their generic and often repeated lyrics. Did any of your school newspapers publish any reviews for 21CB too? Do you agree with the review(s)? i.e. the generic and repeated lyrics
Lauren Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Schools have newspapers? and ones that like Green Day?where I'm from, it's all about "indie" rock and rap. and your school must be huge to have a newspaper.
Supermodel*Robot Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 It's sort of shocking how little I've heard about Green Day at all. I mean, I understood during the past three years, but I thought the new album would put them in the light again. Then again, I don't listen to the radio so I can't judge their air time. But no one I know got the album or even knew it was coming out. Sort of strange. I don't think that article is that well thought out, no offense.
Bohemian+Scandal Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Kind of a lame review, but if I was still at my old high school, I bet I would have reviewed it. I did a lot of entertainment reviews for the paper.
RogueBreakdown Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 uhhhh yeah no. I do not agree with what that reviewer said. I'm gonna say as a general consensus (excluding those who have sense of taste) most high school students think that Britney Spears and TI are geniuses so I try not to go by what they say about other music since they don't have a shred of musical taste.
forget_me_nots Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 ^^ My school has a newspaper (not a big school at all, 700 students) and that's usually the shit they decide to review. I don't know what I'd do if they tried Green Day. O_O
Jason Alvarez Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 My school has a newspaper ran by ME because everyone else is too lazy to spend hundreds of dollars on ink and stuff.(Elementary, Ehh.)Anyways, I did a review on it and gave 21CB 6/5 stars. That rating had only been reached 3 times in its two-year history. You wanna see the whole review?Have at it: The Resource LegendSorry, its kinda off for summer, so you may encounter errors.
Foxboro Hot Tubs Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Do you agree with the review(s)? i.e. the generic and repeated lyricsyes and no.i agree that there are repeated lyrics. but I think that's a great thing. there some phrases, words and themes that go through the whole album and that's one thing that makes this album a masterpiece.it's not just a bunch of isolated songs. it's an album.ahh and we don't have a newspaper in our school. and if we had one, nobody would care about Green Day.
Tiffx Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 That review was a fail. I don't like lazy reviews that don't bother to explore the depth of the record.
rage-love-life Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Lame review. Yeah, there's a lot of repeated crap, but it's to show themes.
Nova-Caine Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 That's not even a review. There's no depth about any songs, there's no content to any great extent about the album. Either do a review properly or not at all, lazy lazy journalism.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 That's a lame review. :/Our school paper maybe would've reviewed it, if the last issue didn't came out before the release of 21CB. As far as I pay attention to the reviews in it, they usually don't review only shit, so there was a change they would've reviewed it.There will be a pretty big 21CB review in a newspaper we have to make for Dutch though. Someone asked me if I could help out with the music/movie reviews, so I translated a 2 page 21CB review
RebelofSuburbia Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 'Some of the songs take a while to get used to, but I found most of them to be favorable, despite their generic and often repeated lyrics.'I agree with that, even I as a pretty big fan of the band (both 'new' American Idiot style music and the old tunes) needed a few good listens to get used to the sound of this album. The repetition fits in most songs, it only bothers me at certain songs (21 guns & last night on earth)
Radioactive1 Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 I agree with what they're saying actually. And we didn't have a newspaper in high school. I think its more an American thing, right?
4whatsername8 Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 I don't care much what this kid said. It was his / her opinion, and isn't that the whole point of a review? It's a single person's viewpoint to give the general public a taste of a new movie, CD, book, etc. However, the kid could have written the article better. I'm a pretty harsh critic, though. I edit most of the things for my school paper, so naturally, I'm going to be tough on him / her. I really wanted to write an article on this album for my school paper, however, our final issue was released the week before the album came out. I would have been scared to write an article on it, though. Just because I got harassed for doing that when American Idiot came out when I was in middle school.

mad hatter. Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I think my school used to have a newspaper, but just gave up. I doubt half the kids in my school can even read to begin with...
Trotsky Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 People with no writing talent shouldn't write, unfortunately that means most people.
kokonut_soda Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I'm surprised someone reviewed it...at my school, when ever I wear a Green Day shirt, I get the dirtiest and most contemptuous looks from people passing by.
Agija Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 The review kinda sucks. I doubt my school has a newspaper, but even if it did, there wouldn't be any reviews.
