Green Day left a fan letter on Rick Nielsen's doorstep

Lou Brutus, a longtime radio DJ and host sent this to someone I know over on the Cheap Trick message boards...

"As for Cheap Trick, I have a scan of a handwritten fan letter they left in the doorway of Cheap Trick's lead guitarist Rick Nielsen on their very first tour. Rick knew I was a big Green Day fan and gave me the copy."

If any details emerge about the letter, I'll be sure and post something here. I just thought it was a neat little story to share.

Strangely enough, Green Day and Cheap Trick would be Warner Bros. label mates a few years later in 1994. Green Day would release their major-label debut "Dookie," produced by Rob Cavallo, and Cheap Trick would release their Warner Bros. debut "Woke Up With a Monster," produced by Ted Templeman, Rob Cavallo's mentor. Dookie would go on to sell millions of copies and bring Green Day fame and success. Woke Up With a Monster would flop and the group would leave Warner Bros. the following year, leaving their fame and success behind them and the band would never work with another major-label again to date, opting to work with indie labels and even self-publishing.

Fate works in strange ways, eh?

I wonder what's written on that fan letter..

I do love me some Cheap Trick. Rockford kicks the ass of any recent Green Day, and I love the new GD records.

Haha, that's awesome.

That makes sense. Their friend Erika Hynes grew up living next door to Rick in MN.

cool, i hope it surfaces soon.

Offtopic: I once came across this group on facebook that was about this big conspiricy and about how GD didnt write Americna Idiot. it theorized that Reprise was upset about Warning's low sales so they didnt let GD write their own music anymore instead they got Rick Nielsen to write AI. it makes no sense whatsoever...

I'm betting that's a rumor because they would have said it on the CD that Rick Nielsen wrote American Idiot on the back cover.

it was a conspiracy type thing. this guy made a group about what he believed was behind AI. his reasoning was that a band like GD couldnt possibly write songs about masturbation and shizz and write a potical punk opera. i wihs i culd still find the group. but in know its not true. it deosnt make any sense.

That definitely doesn't make any sense since Cheap Trick are probably the least political band of all time, you're not even allowed to talk politics on their message board! Not to mention Cheap Trick left on bad terms with Warner Bros, and they haven't even had a single chart on the Billboard top 200 since 1997. Their 2006 album Rockford was critically acclaimed, but went nowhere in terms of success...

If they wanted success they would have called in the big guns of professional songwriting, like Butch Walker or even the queen of cheese, Dianne Warren.

Aww that's so sweet
