Green Day lashes out at Wal-Mart policy

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY – 56 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — Green Day has the most popular CD in the country, but you won't be able to find it at your local Wal-Mart.

The band says the giant superstore chain refused to stock its latest CD, "21st Century Breakdown," because Wal-Mart wanted the album edited for language and content, and they refused.

"Wal-Mart's become the biggest retail outlet in the country, but they won't carry our record because they wanted us to censor it," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in a recent interview.

While Wal-Mart sells CDs from acts known for raunchy content, including Eminem's latest, they offer customers the "clean" version of those CDs, which are edited for content that may be objectionable. But in Armstrong's view, "There's nothing dirty about our record."

"They want artists to censor their records in order to be carried in there," he said. "We just said no. We've never done it before. You feel like you're in 1953 or something."

So Gree Day refused to make a "clean" version of the new album. I personally think they're totally right in that decision but I just wondered if anyone disagrees.

i never really understood the concept of censoring music.

like if you here a song on the radio and its censored its automatically awkard for someone

who would find it offensive uncensored because they know their would be a swear word in it.

music is about freedom of speech so why would you want to censor that.

I'm happy about this

GO BILLIE!

And that explains why The Green Day CD's left wallmart 0_0

They did leave. I went to the local walmart the other day and they didn't have any Green Day CD's in stock.

I think it's really stupid that an artists music has to be censored to be sold there.

You know how much more business they could have if they sold PA albums?

Like they need it though.

There shouldn't be censoring in any kind of art.

I'm glad they didn't make a clean version. This one is clean enough!

Agreed. I'm glad they stood their ground and didn't allow a censored version out, good for them.

Seems really strange that a big company would have such a policy. I wonder why they don't just use parental advisory stickers?

Its a shame that they're losing out on sales because of this but I mean why should Green day change a work of art just to meet Walmart's conditions. No-ones being forced to listen to it against their will. Its not being broadcast over the loudspeakers in store (nice thought :) ). Anyone who wants to buy it can see the explicit sticker on it so knows what to expect. I just hate the way these organisations appoint themselves as moral guardians. They're only a store at he end of the day and should sell what people want to buy.

Go! Green Day! Go!

I was gonna say the same thing... Why censor it? I'm pretty sure if there was a 14 or 15 year old wanting to buy the CD, they would be familiar with the few swear words that are in the lyrics.. if you're not mature enough to handle the meaning of the songs and the "cussing" then you shouldn't have the CD anyway.

SHIT no wonder I couldn't find it there last Friday...

GOOD for Green Day.

You just said exactly what I wanted to say. (but way better written than I could have ever done )

I never understood why they censor stuff, because everyone knows what's being said under the beeps anyway.

good for them :)

I kinda agree with Mike - what's the point in selling music in the first place if they're just going to censor it ? Music isn't all safe and nice and they should sell it in the form the artist wants everyone to hear it in.

I really liked this article. I agree 100%. There is no Wal-Mart near me, so I'm not usually aware of it... but, yeah, it really is a huge CD seller and censoring art for a huge number of consumers is not okay.

Props to Green Day for not compromising their beliefs for the fuckwads at Wal-Mart. Seriously, music shouldn't be censored. I understand that there may be young kids out there who's parents don't want the kid hearing the cursing, but for fuck's sake! When that kid gets a bit older, they're just going to hear those words, anyways. What difference does it make? And if the parents don't want the kid to hear it, there's a simple solution. It's called: Don't buy the CD (if you're that uptight), or if you you do buy the CD, don't leave it around for your kid to find! Oh, well. Wal-Mart is stupid, plain and simple.

Yeah down with censorship in all forms and good for Green Day to stand up against Wal Mart and its attempt to censor their album

Censorship of art and freedom of speech never made sense to me either... I am SOOO glad Green Day did this. Way to go! Fuck Wal-Mart!

Just heard it on the Radio. :o

Well done Green Day. :)

And people say they aren't punk!

Aren´t stickers enough anymore?!

Why should Green Day care? Who really wants to get the record, gets it elsewhere then. Just a loss for WalMart. I´m glad they stick it to the man :D
