Green Day News forum

I've created a new forum just for "Green Day News", and I've decided once again against splitting Green Day / General Chat. First, I'll explain the new forum, then below is my reasoning against splitting.

The News forum will be a sort of repository for news threads. This includes reviews and other current event type threads. Most reviews and other non-important news threads (regional radio contests, minor mentions, etc.) will be moved to that forum. More important items (upcoming TV appearances, major magazine articles) will be kept in the General forum for a while. After an event has passed (such as a TV appearance) the thread will be moved over into the News forum within a couple days, where people can continue talking about it. This approach will allow people to continue reading all of these if they wish, while not taking up space for other big news or discussions happening in the General forum. It will be up to the mod team to decide which news items are important enough to stay in General, and which should be moved. Since this is a new idea, it'll take some time for everyone to understand how it's going to work out, and I'm sure once we do, it'll be better for everyone.

Now, for the decision on not splitting up the forum. There are a few different groups of people who frequent GDC. Hard-core Green Day fans who love every small detail, those who don't really care if they see everything, but don't mind some of the discussions about the band, and those who like coming just for the general banter and friendships they've made here. It's not easy to please all those groups, especially when parts of each group all want different things. Some hard-core fans would like their own forum to keep everything in one place, and somewhere where they don't have to worry about how petty a thread might be, some hardcore fans would rather they stay together so they can stumble across the interesting General threads intermixed with the Green Day things, and there's about a dozen other variations of what people would like. My decision came down to a couple things.

1) I like having the two forums together because it really does encourage more activity amongst the different groups of visitors

2) It's completely understandable how so many new Green Day threads can be overwhelming, and we lose a lot of General discussion

So taking those two things into account, I talked with the mod team and the idea of the News forum came up. I think this works best, because we have a place where every review and mention of the band can be posted, and we can still have a place for the major topics or current-events that go along with the General forum. This is a sort of compromise, and one that I'm happy with. We can still talk about everything Green Day, while encouraging the General discussions, and people who would rather only see the major Green Day topics/news can still stumble across them and vice-versa.

I know not all of you will like this idea, but we're gonna give this a shot and see how it works out.

So now we have to go to 2 different places to read about Green Day? I really don't like this idea, all Green Day topics should be kept together. We can't split Green Day/General but we can split the Green Day stuff in a Green Day forum? It just doesn't make any sense and sounds rather unpractical....

It's not going to kill anyone to check out two different forums. It's not really that hard to understand the logic here either. Major items or current events will be in the General forum as they've always been, other things that have already passed, or are not too important, will be in the News forum.

Everyone here is capable of doing this, and by having it this way, I don't feel that we will in anyway be causing less interaction and discussion. If anything, I can see this leading to more discussion.

So wait, if I wanted to submit news, would I have to search for a Green Day news thread in General Chat or Green Day News? Or both?

Just making sure.

I disagree, if anything should be split is Green Day and General and not Green Day and Green Day.

I don't see the point of having made that poll since most people voted yes on splitting GD and GC. (I know you said the poll wouldn't be God, but it should be democratic, specially with such a big difference from yes to no.)

But ok, like you said, you know not everyone would be happy.

Instead of splitting big news and current news from smaller and older news, the most reasonable thing to do would be to split GD from GC, since both aren't the same thing, and all the GD news should stay together in a Green Day forum.

Ok, now I'm being redundant, I think I've made my point.

People need to chill about this.

At least it's something.

Thanks for at least considering both sides of the forum, Andres. :)

Yay !!!

Good choice :)

We have a "Green Day Topics" button up there if you want Green Day-related threads only.

both. If one exists, a mod will close it and link to the other one. That policy seems alright to me.

I don't think it'd take much effort to open up the General forum, skim the most recent topics, the view the News forum and view the most recent topics. If something I want to post isn't already there, I'll make the thread. If i was wrong, it'll get closed, no harm done. Thats pretty much what I do all the time.

it would be superb if they were ever tagged properly.

No, thats not the most reasonable thing to do. Thats the most logical thing to do because it's the easiest thing to differentiate between, but not the most reasonable. I decided against it because I know that if we did that, things would not be as fun. It's like over-organizing it. And i know one place for ALL General topics would get much more boring than one place for all Green Day topics. I like the idea of them being together, I just didn't like that we suddenly had tons and tons of trivial stuff piling up in there as well.

it would be superb if they were ever tagged properly.

And I'm looking into a way at giving that responsibility to everyone, and not just the mods. It's easy to forget to mark an item when we're constantly in and out of so many threads.

Hence why I don't even use it.

True, but what can we really do if it's practically a shortcut to searching the term "Green Day?"

Hence why I don't even use it.
Again,
At least it's something.

We've discussed this and I think it's a great idea. That way when we look for news people post, I don't have to go through all the reviews and stuff here at the regular forum. We think 2 days is a good enough time for the items to be looked at here in this forum, and then moved over. Unless it's something major.

Between this and having ALL GD topics together with GC, I rather have the second. As if what we think even counts at this point

Oh well..... we'll all see where this goes together. I'm sure if it's a total fiasco it will be changed back.

And if it turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to GDC, I'm sure it'll stay.

This is just silly. More discussion of what?

Why should people that come here for Green Day have to check two different forums? I understand where you are coming from regarding thinking it stimulates conversation, but it doesnt. The people that are here for green day dont check the other threads and the people here for general only go in the gd threads to complain if they go in at all. The people that arent here for Green Day should be the ones to check two different forums.

It was such a huge landslide to split or at least split and merge later, makes me really curious as to why you didnt.

Ugh, don't give me that shit. It's not easy when you're hearing from a thousand different people, who are all 100% sure they have the best idea.

You know all you people bitching about checking 2 different forums for news could just check the GDA homepage first. :P

I am not sure I have the best idea, the only thing I'm sure of is that most people on this forum voted yes on splitting GD from GC, even if temporarily.

And I second Beth's opinion AND the fact that it's not the first time a GD/GC split poll was made, and every time to be split wins, and it never splits, so what's the point in still making them? Giving (most) people on this forum false hope?

Damn I'm tired of this now, you all get my point of view and it will stay this way, I am just glad I put my opinion out there.

But most news from GDA homepapage come from here.

Ah, but we've been getting Green Day news every few hours or so because of the new album.

GDA updates daily, and doesn't account for every trifle of Green Day news that some of us love to death. :P

Most people on GDC get all their news from the forum. i know i never check GDA.

I'm against this forum splittage myself but i don't think i've been here long enough to really have a say.. so do what you will.
