7/10

Excerpts:

21st Century Breakdown is definitely a step up from American Idiot on just about every front, as the former seems like a natural evolution from the latter.

Really? Because American Idiot got a 10/10 from your site. So how is this a step up from American Idiot, yet a 7/10?

Just be cautious going into the experience, and remember -- Nimrod and Dookie are probably collecting dust on your shelf, when you should probably be rocking out to those instead.

Ugh

agree with the ugh

I'm just let down, because IGN.com was one of the first sites to give American Idiot a 10/10 when it first came out. They gave it a great review early on, before everyone else. So it really sucks that they would do something like this. What a horrible review.

EDIT: To say..I have no problem with someone not liking this album. Its just the way he approached the review. It was basically a complaint that Green Day no longer sounds like they used to.

its the same site but not the same reviewer right?

if the guy who did the review doesnt like gd, what can we do?

Well, hating Green Day is pretty much a trend whenever they put out something new..

i got a headache just reading that review. at times i thought i understood what they were getting at and then i read something that completely turned it all over. no direction.

i don't get why this "hating on green day" though. a 7/10 isn't a bad score by my standards. it's actually pretty generous compared to some of the other reviews i've read.

He comlained that they dont sound like the old green day, and said its better than american idiot(which got a 10)

Worst review yet.

I respect the guy's opinion, but that was a very poorly written review. It's not objective or even intelligent at all. IGN should stick to video games.

To be fair, going back and reading AI review from IGN, the reviewer (JR who I'm pretty sure has separated from IGN but still works with IGN Wii from time to time.) absolutely loved it. Everything about it. His final words are:

You will emerge from your experience with American Idiot physically tired, emotionally drained, and, quite possibly, changed forever. It is less an album than an experience that demands to be lived. It is a part of my life now, as well as the most satisfying hour of music I've ever heard. Nothing else even comes close. In short, American Idiot is flawless. There's not a weak song, a dull moment, or even the vaguest sign that Green Day's best days are over. Your jaw will be on the floor from the first chord to the last.

As you can see, I am passionate about this record's brilliance and I am honored to give it my highest possible recommendation. So don't just stand by and watch as this album sets the world on fire. Buy it immediately and see how great music can be.

The new reviewer who I've never heard of and could be at this point nothing but an intern with a different taste in music or just one of Green Day's elitist "early Green Day" fans, just didn't like it. It's the exact same reason I heard for most of American Idiot. Just not the old Green Day. And it's not, but when you understand what direction they are coming from with this album, and how great their last album was, you get a clearer picture of WHAT 21st Century Breakdown is. And even that is not very clear.

That being said, as I stated in the "Post Your Full Reviews" thread, 21CB just doesn't have the energy that American Idiot did. And that may be what the reviewer was trying to say (I see hints of it in there), but just couldn't get out, so he/she/it returns to the overly tired line of not old Green Day.

^^^^

That is fine, but it still didn't convey well in the review. Instead, it read as he was just complaining about their new sound, and wishing they would go back to the good ol' days. It was also confusing how he could this better then American Idiot - and give it a 7. Then again, you pointed out it's a different guy. Jesus, I wonder what he would have given American Idiot. A 6?

I guess my point is, it's fine if you don't like the album. Or don't like it as much as AI - or whatever. But that review came off as sloppy and lazy.

Most people who have reviewed Green Day negatively dont make sense in their writing//contradict themselves.

hes wrong and i refuse to respect his poor opinion

eh... come on dude. everyone has an opinion. just as every girl who loves billie's eyes has an opinion to love the band this guy has to hate it.

i'm fine with the review, my album! MINE!

BTW random, but while at work today we had a fire alarm and while waiting to be let in two older guys were talking about the GD performance on SNL and how they heard the new album was good and how much they loved AI. Not not awkward since I wanted to run up and play it for them on my iPod...

So it's better than American Idiot but it doesn't capture the "essence of Green Day" so it gets a 7? Totally makes so much sense. >_>

"I'm just not sure today's Green Day is the Green Day music fans really desire."

Fucking review is BS.

Colin Moriarty? Isn't he a character from Fallout 3?

^^^Actually, yes. Lol, that evil Barkeep in Megaton. Bastard.

Anyway Kate, yea it was sloppy and lazy. Hence why I said it was probably an intern. Or as Captain Pas said, it's a bastard ass barkeep from a kick ass videogame. With an Irish accent.

You can't beat that game  (damnit where's the hypnotized eyes from IGN forum? lol)

I've tried. Too...many...Mutants...ahhh!!! Enclave!

Fallout 3 is so big, not even Green Day can beat it! (trying to stay topical)

I don't see why they are that negative... At least it's 7/10.

"...if you're a fan who appreciates, say, Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod, you're not going to find an incredible amount to like with American Idiot, and the same can be said with Green Day's newest offering."

Oh really?

That was very wordy but it didn't say much. Some people seem to think it's up to them to decide "what Green Day is" for some reason. Green Day is whatever the members of Green Day feel like being, he should get over it.

Possibly in an ambitious kind of way?

I think it's a pretty good review. This album is by no means perfect, and i'm glad that some reviewers have noted this. It should also be noted that despite some criticisms, IGN have allocated enough gushing over the band to keep you hardcore "fans" happy, so I think you should stop whining. :P

As for the direction Green Day go in, I think it's also fine to state where you'd like them to go. Obviously it's up to them in the end, but surely you're allowed to voice your desires for future incarnations without being lynched?

I think you misunderstood me. As I've said numerous times, I don't care if people hate this album. It's all fair game, music is 100% subjective. I just thought the review came off as lazy and sloppy. And basically a mans rant how he wished the band would go back to their old sound.

That was the only issue I took with it. Having lines like..."But Dookie and Nimrod are waiting to be dusted off, which you would probably rather rock out to instead" - is just douchebaggery, and not professional.

He's not being totally untruthful though, in my eyes.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if we were reading different reviews... I don't think that some on the side of Green Day are treating this album as subjectively as they say they are.

Yeah, I know! I don't get it..

It's two different reviewers. So it might be a step up from AI in his opinion.
