AlanJLegend Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Now don't get me wrong here. I LOVE 21st Century Breakdown, however it seems there are quite a few similarities with other Green Day songs on it. Here are some I have noticed, you guys may have found more.1. American Eulogy > Deadbeat HolidayThe verse melodies are pretty similar, not much to explain here.2. The Static age > Church on SundayThe chorus rhythm for both songs are very similar.3. Viva la Gloria > Worry RockThis isn't anything major, but the melody of "...we're gonna start a war..." and "...fat lips and open wounds..." sounds a lot the same.4. Murder city > Too much too soon"...This demonstration of our anguish" sounds A LOT like "...I hope you rest in pieces..."Anyway, as I said this is not meant to be negative about the new songs at all. I just noticed there are quite a few similarities and it may be fun to see what else we can find!
Jack96 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 whilst were at it the solo in Before the lobotomy sounds abit like the small one in the simpsons theme they did and the static age solo sounds abit like the main riff for too much too soon
saurus Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The songs are all from the same band, of course there are going to be similarities?Or maybe it's just a lack of creativity and skill? *shrugs*
Farah Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 mmm. i don't really care if you find any similarities between their songs.. it's always green day anyway..Just put up with it mate they all sound bloody great even if they are abit the same as other songs. But whilst were at it the solo in Before the lobotomy sounds abit like the small one in the simpsons theme they did and the static age solo sounds abit like the main riff for too much too soonhaha yeah! i was thinking about the simpsons one too the other day! but i love it!
Pineapple Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 i thought as i listened to it today that all the songs on the album sounded familiar... not from other albums but they all had something in common :|
LAIDinUSA Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I agree with alanjlegend. A lot of the songs sound like they rehashed old material. I love Green Day but I'm actually a little dissapointed with this album...especially after it was so hyped up. "To each is own", I suppose

Haz Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 You forgot that in Viva La Gloria? It's the same riff as letterbombI get what you mean about static age aswell, it's pretty cool but kinda wierd at the same time
Ally Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 they do sounds like other green day songs but oh well i don't care...all the sounds they sound like are ones i love anyway!!

novacaine_kid Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The chorus in little girl sounds a lot like blood sex and booze. or at least the chords in it do.
Jack96 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The chorus in little girl sounds a lot like blood sex and booze. or at least the chords in it do.I think its probably the same chord progression
Harriet Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Little girl=Misery i don't mind the others, but this one really annoys me because its so obvious
novacaine_kid Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 You could also make a case that the solo in restless heart syndrome sounds like the ending to bobd. Also 21 guns has a hint of that very same song in it too, and the opening part to last of the american girls has shades of whatsername too. there is a ton of similarities to old green day songs here, and a lot of non green day stuff too
Sister of Grace Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Why do you gusy even bother to look for these things?
novacaine_kid Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Hysteria from too much listening most probably. Yes there is a ton of similarities, but its green day, its a great album, good times.
Harun Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I love the album and think it's their best ever but i too can't get over all the similarities with older songs. Was just listening to last of the american girls and it sounds a lot like tge song redundant
Comrade Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 How close are you people listening?? I've hardly noticed any similarities, I checked for the ones you guys have mentioned, and my god are most of them tenuous. People just have to find something to complain about. Let's face it, the songs with similarities, say Static Age, are better than the ones they seem to 'copy' from. Especially Static Age is getting to me, it's only in the chorus, and even then, it is almost entirely unrecogniseable, what with the different lyrics, about a 50% different melody and what-not. Sure I am hearing a slight similarity, but hardly anything noteworthy. Little Girl soundling like Misery? Well thats just because they have a similar style. The actual songs are pretty different. I noticed RHS and bobd, but I think that may be more a nod to previous word by the band on purpose. 21 Guns I didn't really pick any similarities up. There is something Whatsernameish about LOTAG, but only in that they have a similar sorta of structure at the very beginning. There is something more to Viva La Gloria and Letterbomb, but the song are essentially so different that it is negligable. I really do think people are making waaaay too much of his sort of thing.
Guest Brian Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 There are only so many possible chord progressions. For a band that's going almost 21 years there are bound to be some similarities between songs.

DeJennsitized Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Well, I noticed some when I was listening, but it doesn't bother me. They're still amazing songs.Though 21 Guns does sound a lot like BOBD. Just as the chorus ends and before the second verse starts, Tre does the exact same drum roll as in BOBD. But I think I prefer the song 21 Guns.
Alan86 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I think the last part of the song 21st century breakdown is a bit similar to City of the damned from jesus of suburbia
Hellcat Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 for people on here that know the australian band the veronicas their track forever is the same as holiday in the chorus.like others have pointed out, there is only so many notes and chords a band can come up with.and for going for 21 years theyre not doing too bad haha.

Yeah!,I think the same way.I'm not talking about chords similarity but the style in which 21 Guns progresses is very much similar to BOBD
