SetOnOverdrive Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Note to Green Day: Please lighten upBy Andy RathunHerald WriterOn Friday, Green Day releases "21st Century Breakdown," one of the year's most anticipated new albums.TRIVIA: Butch Vig (Nirvana's "Nevermind") produced the album, which is broken into three acts: "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints" and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades."STANDOUTS: "Peacemaker," tumbles out with the quick strum of an acoustic guitar and a few hey-heys.FANS DIG: GuylinerANDY SAYS: I miss when Green Day was fun. The group still knows its way around a hook, but is trying too hard to make a grand statement with dull-edged swipes at government and religion. The result is humorless. That bears repeating: Green Day has become humorless, reason enough for a single tear. The band needs to start turning to Jon Stewart for inspiration, not CNN.com.GRADE: C-plusSOURCEHarsh words. He obviously really doesn't like it. I have to be honest the album can be pretty hard to like. I guess its just not his cup of tea =PFANS DIG: GuylinerI also think he is a total cock for saying that!
Trotsky Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I'd rather Green Day be serious than turn into early Blink-182.
steelthorne Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 SOURCEHarsh words. He obviously really doesn't like it. I have to be honest the album can be pretty hard to like. I guess its just not his cup of tea =PI also think he is a total cock for saying that!they're getting older. and they have fucking kids who actually can watch them on TV and understand what they're doing. i don't think id wanna watch my dad run around naked or something thats all im saying. they had to stop eventually. and better they release something like 21CB when they do beccause now at least we have something bold to latch onto. you know?yes billie, we know.
Kate Austen Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Note to writer:Stop listening to new Green Day so much if you don't like them serious. You have a full career of albums you can to listen to at your own pleasure. That is all.
Foxboro Hot Tubs Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 well, everbody is allowed to think about the new album as he wants toso I don't really care about that .. if he think that Green Day is humorless than .. let him think so
Alex Screams Remedy Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 haha after harsh critism he still gives a C+ so it can't be that bad

liquorhill Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 wellllll i can beat that ass and i can win but i can still beat that ass and win!
b u r n o u t Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 To each his/her own. I really didn't like this album on first listen, but I'm loving it now. Strange considering I still really don't like American Idiot (aside from Letterbomb <3) and this album basically continues in the same direction. I do wish there were more punkish songs on 21st Century, but overall I'm happy with it.

Kryssi. Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I do miss the 'old' Green Day, but people have to grow up sometime...
Hermione Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Some people seem to imagine that Green Day used to be some stupid band who just made silly songs about wanking and lazing around. So they complain that they're too serious now. Green Day were never like that in the first place, they've always had much more depth and ambition than that. These types of complaints are tiresome :bored:
RebelAmongSaints Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Yes, because clearly writing songs about jerking off and drunk driving is what the band should be doing, instead of actually trying to have a deeper meaning to their songs. After all, thats what punk is all about, isn't it? Note to author: Grow up. Green Day has.
emmaILGD! Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Well, y'know, there's always going to be some people who don't like the album. Same with any album. But I like it, so I don't really mind if someone who thinks all the fans like is the eyeliner dislikes it.
fashionvictim86 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Note to author: Grow up. Green Day has.I love that. What a douche. This guy obviously isn't a Green Day fan, if he was, he'd understand them more.
Trina Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I hate these writers who think Green Day used to write albums worth of songs about actually wanking off and shit...They just have no clue...They really really dont.Almost all of Green Day's songs from 1000hours to 21stCB are serious, so he's just a bad journo.Fail.
RebelofSuburbia Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I do miss the 'old' Green Day, but people have to grow up sometime...I agree, I miss the 'old' Green Day at times too but to be honest it would be pretty awkward if they'd still act as obnoxious as they sometimes did back in the days. They're in their mid-thirties for crying out loud. It'd be disturbing to see a 37-year old throw mud like a rebelling teenager or take a shit on to somebody's balcony.
IscoredWaddlesgoals Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I can kinda see his point a bit, some of the lyrics do seem a bit over earnest (Peter Paphides mentioned this in the Times review) but they can't act like idiots for the rest of their lives. They come across as kinda nasty and arrogant (in my opinion anyway) in a few old interviews and I really don't want them to go back to that.
Katarina. Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Note to author: Grow up. Green Day has.Haha, good one

gdpunk2 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 If he dont like the album, fair enough. But those are some harsh words. Well, if it becomes as successful as American idiot, its millions of peoples opinions against his, so you know
