Sitting around a table at Radio, a bar in Oakland barely illuminated by red Japanese lanterns and a string of red lights, the band members clearly enjoy one another’s company and jokes. When they eventually returned to daylight, it turned out Mr. Armstrong and Tré Cool were wearing the same stylish gray shoes (but only Mr. Armstrong was wearing polka-dot socks).
Last summer, the band and Mr. Vig moved to a small studio in Costa Mesa, Calif. Between sessions, Green Day set up a pirate radio transmitter, broadcasting favorite songs, familiar and obscure, with IDs for “Rebel Radio” and its own demo recordings sandwiched in, testing them against its heroes. “You could hear the new Green Day songs as you were driving down the road,” Mr. Armstrong said. “Thank God it never got bootlegged.”
The day after the election, Mr. Armstrong wrote a new song called “Wonderful,” Mr. Vig said. “It was super poppy, sunny, Beach Boys but with fuzzy pop chords,” he said. “It was great. Hundreds of bands would kill to have this song on the record.” Mr. Armstrong, he said, vetoed it, deciding it wouldn’t fit with the rest of the album. “He said, ‘I just had to write it,’ ” Mr. Vig recalled.

That's a great article! Answers a lot of questions people had regarding that pirate radio station that was probably the frequency featured in the first videos they shared on youtube, etc.

I'd also like to hear that "poppy" song...maybe a future single release? :woot:

“Murder City,” which refers to rioting in Oakland in January after a transit policeman shot a captured suspect in the back, sums up the album’s tone

Wasn't there a spam thread about this?

I really enjoyed this read, and I'll bet this is the article they called Andres about (wanting to know who to credit for photos in our Vault).

I thought the same, especially since that one old photo is used in the article. :sherlock:

ok, so 70 to 100 songs, nice!

Possible songs: Rebel Radio and Wonderful, maybe they'll be considered for next album, which I suspect will be fairly close to 21stCB (just a hunch) :P

Great read!

It just cracks me up how they refer to Billie Joe as "Mr Armstrong"

"In near-secret club and theater shows that may continue during the band’s coming arena tour, Green Day has been playing “21st Century Breakdown” from start to finish."

This would be a good thing.

OMG! I immediately thought of that when I first heard that there´s gonna be a song named "Murder City" :o Although the text doesn´t quite make me think of that, let´s say, riot, I will probably think of it when listening to the song after reading this.

And that tour that Tré took sounds kinda familiar :ninja:

That was such a great article and it really did answer a lot of questions. Thank you very much for posting, Amy!

Fabulous! I really enjoyed that, and I WANT TO HEAR THIS "WONDERFUL" SONG :o . I can imagine how it wouldn't fit on the album though, I vote that they should make a new Foxies album and stick it on there instead

Yes! Those sneaky buggers, the mystery is finally solved.
