Another Wise Ingrate Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Looks like New England is the place to be when it comes to gay marriage:CONCORD, New Hampshire (Reuters) – New Hampshire's Senate passed a bill on Wednesday that would legalize same-sex marriage after an amendment was added that allows clergy to decline to marry gay couples. The bill, which passed in a 13-11 vote, needs to be signed by Governor John Lynch to make New Hampshire the fifth U.S. state where gay marriage is legal. The Democrat has not indicated whether he will sign or veto the bill, but has expressed opposition to the measure. The bill passed the state's House of Representatives on March 26 but looked set for near certain defeat in the Senate before the amendment, which appeared to mollify some critics in the Democratic-controlled chamber. The last-minute changes to the legislation would allow clergy to decline to marry homosexual couples and give couples the freedom to either keep the words "bride" and "groom" on marriage licenses, or use the word "spouse" instead.Because the Senate and House passed separate versions, they must resolve their differences before the bill can go to the governor, who in 2007 signed a law recognizing same-sex civil unions, making New Hampshire the fourth state to do so.Lynch has said the word marriage should be reserved for a traditional heterosexual relationship. The bill, which would take effect on January 1, also recognizes out-of-state gay marriages and civil unions. Couples who now have civil unions would automatically become married by January 1, 2011. The extra year allows time for a formal ceremony.Gay marriage made big inroads this month when, in a single week, Iowa and Vermont joined Massachusetts and Connecticut in allowing gay couples to legally wed. On Tuesday, a joint judiciary committee in neighboring Maine's legislature approved a bill to allow same-sex marriage. Maine's House and Senate could vote on the measure as early as next week. Yay New Hampshire! Hopefully our governer doesn't veto the bill.

Trotsky Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 They thought prop 8 in California was a victory, but it was only a rallying call for those fighting for liberty. 45 or so more states and one tax exempt status of the LDS stripped away to go.Sounds like the NH governor is going to be a dick wad. And I suppose the Congress isn't enough to override a veto.
tapdancingowl Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Please don't let the governor be a douche and veto this.Gay marriage ftw!
Mommy's Little Nightmare Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I have never, and will never, understand why gay marriage upsets people so fucking much. It just blows my mind how up in arms people get about allowing gay marriage.
dookiehead Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Hmm... The New Hampshire House of Representatives has a pretty strong Democratic majority, so it should be able to override Lynch if he decides to veto it. That said, anyone from NH here know the chances that he vetoes it? All I know about John Lynch is that he pretty cleverly avoided problems with the hypothetical Judd Gregg replacement thing and that NH governors are up for election every two years, so he has to deal with the consequences next year. And yay for New England moving closer to entire region-wide legalisation. Rhode Island's legislature is overwhelmingly Democratic, so hopefully they'll pass something this year. And maybe New York too, and Jon Corzine might decide to follow David Paterson's lead in New Jersey and hope it'll boost his support.
rage-love-life Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Lynch, please sign this bill...please. I support gay marriage-they should have all the rights that regular couples have. Wish Illinois would allow it.

It just blows my mind how up in arms people get about allowing gay marriage."Because homosexuality is unnatural and children will grow up retarded because they have two mommies and AIDS will spread even more!!!"People are judgemental assholes who don't understand that love is love and homo/bisexuality is not a choice. I did a debate about this in english class last year, and one of the kids in my class was like "Why couldn't you just choose to be straight?" O.oOh, the stupidity.

I've heard every excuse in the book that people who are against gay marriage have, and... none of them make any sense. So, I fail to get it. And I never will.
ifmemoryserves Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 ZOMG!!!!!! ... a nother New Hampshire person. It's a NH party up in here!
Trotsky Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Progress I say even if all 50 states legalize gay marriage and provide full rights, the movement is not complete until every church that funded grassroots bigotry is paying taxes.
Another Wise Ingrate Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 ZOMG!!!!!! ... a nother New Hampshire person.where ya from?Right now I live in New Ispwich. But I work in and frequent Nashua.Hmm... That said, anyone from NH here know the chances that he vetoes it? I know that he has said he did not believe the bill was necessary because New Hampshire allows civil unions. But he has failed to say whether or not he would veto it.
Trotsky Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 NH may not be totally screwed though because he is a Democrat and there are hopefully enough liberals who would threaten to not re-elect him if he doesn't sign it. But then again people are lazy fucks.
jose armstrong Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 has the world gone crazy?people these days, I swear, they act as if God didn't exist at all, breaking our morals and denying our values
mmmcrazypills Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Makes sense theat the New England states pass this. We rank at the bottom in terms of religiousness (no complaints whatsoever)NH may not be totally screwed though because he is a Democrat and there are hopefully enough liberals who would threaten to not re-elect him if he doesn't sign it. But then again people are lazy fucks.lots of MA liberals are moving into NH because the schools are better and the taxes arent as bad. There is hope.

Trotsky Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Makes sense theat the New England states pass this. We rank at the bottom in terms of religiousness (no complaints whatsoever)lots of MA liberals are moving into NH because the schools are better and the taxes arent as bad. There is hope. There could be a clear and unquestioned majority of liberals in Congress and a majority of liberal citizens. That's the case in more states than have gay marriage right now. The politicians want to keep their spot in office so they push a broad appeal to as many people as possible, they deny things like gay marriage because they're afraid of isolating some voters. And they get away with that because it's not as if liberals are going to vote for Republicans. So Democrats get to be cowards and voters get to justify their cowardice every election. When in a better world the liberal voters would rally behind third parties until the Democrats acknowledge a need for their help in the same way the Republicans do for the religious right. The difference is that the religious right is in a decline.
