jtdscape Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 “Question: What was it like being in a cool band back in L.A. in 1980? “John Doe: Um, it was cool. The funny thing is, everybody wants to know and unfortunately there’s no way you can explain it. Everyone knew something was happening but didn’t know how long it would last or what kind of impact it would have in the future — and basically didn’t care. Everyone was busy trying to figure out if they could actually write songs or be in a band or whatever they wanted the most. Of course, people were self-absorbed, but on the other hand, everyone knew they were part of something that was going to be remembered.“The whole idea of “making it” was sort of secondary. No one thought of it as high art, but pop art, you know? And if the media hadn’t been so turned off by the Sex Pistols and some people that were just being jerks, it could’ve been the next big thing. It took another 20 years for people like Green Day to popularize it.“I think Green Day’s a great band. I also think a lot of other bands want to be Green Day but can’t because Billy Joe can write a hit song. If there was no Joe Strummer (of The Clash), I don’t think there would’ve been a Billy Joe Armstrong, but that doesn’t really matter. I think it was a formula and a style of music that was destined to work.”And then there are members of the current crop of new punks (or however Fall Out Boy might be labeled) who get it too, and who also give Green Day their due:Fall Out Boy tour stops in Columbus, Oct. 18, 2007.“Question: In one recent video, you guys poke fun at the fact that you are now sort of being labeled as sell-outs or has-beens now that you have reached this successful stage in your careers? “Pete Wentz: It’s weird because I’ve been on both sides of the coin. I’ve been there and I’ve felt like I’ve lost bands, and I’ve been in a band and people have felt like they lost us. It’s an interesting thing because I felt like that with Green Day but now I can’t be a better fan of Green Day. I’ve met those guys, and knowing their ideals and I can’t believe what my 14-year-old self was thinking.”“It’s one of those things that changes with age I guess. At the same time, when people like us dance with the devil they’re going to end up with a bit of the devil’s cologne on them, I guess. I’m just thankful for the fans who have stuck around.”
*Minority* Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 It's really cool that a well-known Green Day fan talks about the sell-outs thing to make people who think this about Green Day think!
