just rewatched the performance for the first time since yesterday, and the nfl upload on youtube sounds even better than what was aired on (german) tv yesterday!

i also recognized that EVERYONE at the stage had sunglasses on (not just billie mike tre, but everyone)

i get that they might need them because of the sun especially at yesterdays performance in the bay area, but for me it always feels less personal if band members wear sunglasses during their gigs, and you can barely see their eyes

Still disappointed by the fact that they said nothing. Performance was amazing. But it wasn't punk rock :(

At least Bad Bunny's performance was amazing and made a real statement. More punk than Green Day's

I feel like this shouldn't be your expectations on what punk rock is. As i mentioned before punk stemmed from suppression of all kinds. And just because green day are a bunch of sheltered rich guys their message should've been sent out to you in many ways. Being censored playing a song obviously about censorship, the setlist, although feeling like "sellouts". Even the contract itself speaks for itself if you look at it a different way.

The fact that they were even out there was punk rock. You've heard Holiday and American Idiot so much you're basically conditioned to think they say nothing when the most political parts are removed for some other reason. No. The songs that way are still political enough, they're still saying something, and that needs to be acknowledged. It doesn't even sound like a big deal that Billie said "Mind-fuck America", but that was probably the limit to what they could say.

Being punk is to speak, not to be able.

This! I didn’t want to write that before because I feared it might sound paranoid. But deep inside I was worried that something terrible could happen. Well, I‘m inclined to worry too much.😅 But still..

And to be honest, if they really had pissed off all those MAGAs I would worry now that some madman might go after Billie or the band or their families.

I was nervous for their safety too! And Bad Bunny had to wear a bullet proof vest. ☹️ We live in troubled times.

These things usually are just a medley. (They did something in 2020 for the Super Bowl that had a similar format.) For the short amount of time, I thought Green Day picked great songs that still made a statement.
It was neat that they flipped the usual order and started with Good Riddance. The string instruments playing as the MVPs walked past—beautiful!

Billie Joe said some great things at the Pier 29 concert 2 days before (can be found on social media).

I don’t usually pay attention to football or SuperbOwls, but I was really excited for this one. I was thrilled that GREEN DAY played at the Super Bowl (!!) and they were awesome! I loved the Bad Bunny halftime show! And lastly, my Seahawks won!! 💙💚

There was good energy all around. 💚💚💚

People complaining are asinine! Fines would be in the millions…people forget the Janet Jackson thing that started all of that. She was not helped by that at all. Also the Super Bowl doesn’t have to be about politics and statements people and families of all ages and backgrounds watch it’s one of the few things that bring people together….if they went off and just protested off script their mics would be shut down, and it would be cut. Also it’s not the time and place to make it about you. It’s fair to say playing the songs they played was good enough…of course he was bleeped he said fuck I wonder if that might get him a fine. You guys sound like Gilman street in the 90’s these guys are not JUST a political band…cant they also have fun and enjoy the moment?!?! They don’t owe us anything. They picked meaningful songs, sounded great, got a bunch of press and good reviews….like what do you want them to do?!?! Get I. Trouble and face serious fines just to make you happy?!?! Let them be they don’t owe us anything and it’s the Super Bowl. Relax. They kicked ass!

You don't get fined by the FCC for saying the words Trump or ICE. That's for breaking rules on profanity and nudity etc. It's not about owing it's about putting your money where your mouth is if you claim to be punk

But see, that’s the point I’m trying to make. He does that all the time. And sometimes he does more.

Maybe it just seems more impactful to you because you are not familiar with his music and performance antics, but for someone not familiar with Green Day, what Green Day did was just as cool.

I was telling my colleagues today that Green Day significantly tone down their message to appease the NFL, I told them about how they didn’t do the “MAGA agenda” lyric change, that they didn’t do the lyric at all, and how that was dissapointing, and they were like “yeah yeah whatever THEY WERE SO COOL FOR SINGING SAYING MINDFUCK AMERICA THE NFL HAD TO CENSOR THEM!!!”

I mean …

Yes but the difference is he actually did it and didn't do a heavily censored version of it. Saying "God bless America" and then naming the Latin American countries is a significant statement. I am glad they played those songs but I feel them being censored the way they were removed their impact

Do we know for a fact they were censored as opposed to just being trimmed down in order to form a medley?

Lol, his songs were also cut in half, he also did a medley. And he had 15 minutes, not 3 and a half.

I feel like this conversation is going nowhere. You do you. If you want to think the biggest mainstream artist in the world right now is somehow more politically impactful than American Idiot and Holiday, you do you 🤷‍♀️

His performance celebrating Latin culture, including a Puerto Rican independence flag and calling all the Latin American countries American was more impactful than the censored versions of these songs which the media and fans reacted to by noting that they played it safe yeah. I do get that they weren't granted as much freedom and time as him but his was the more impactful performance

But maybe it was meant to be that way and GD respected that?

I think it always would have been because he was the headliner and it was a great performance and a huge production. I don't think playing it so safe that the entire press and fan takeaway from the performance is that they played it super safe was necessary to prevent upstaging
