What Bands Have You Gotten Into Through Green Day?

Recommended Posts

Kind of what it says on the tin, but are there any bands or artists that you've gotten into or explored directly because of Green Day? Either they've mentioned them in an interview, collabed with them, mentioned them as an influence etc. etc.聽

I'm always looking for more bands and artists to explore, so interested to see what people say.聽

There are lots of my part but I'll start with a few:聽

- Operation Ivy (fairly obvious, but through the cover and then exploring the original)聽

- The Ramones

- Rancid (Again, East Bay punk scene cited as influence).聽

- Frank Turner (saw him support GD at Wembley Stadium in 2010 and he was awesome, been a fan ever since).聽

- The Linda Lindas (watching them kill it last summer as support on the Saviors tour made me check out their stuff).聽

There are many more, but those just to start!聽

Prima Donna.

Very interesting question. Of course GD's unique new sound "89/'90s spawned many new bands, some becoming famous. But imho no comparison.

Billie Joe's family was into music in various forms which influenced him.聽

I'm always fascinated how songwriters and musicians, are influenced by songs prior to their birth. Billie Joe is no exception.聽

So yes,聽 Ramones, obviously. But also '60 British Bands, including The Who, and The Kinks, for example.聽

No bands in particular apart from Weezer.

But I like to listen to the original version of whatever songs Billie covered with Green Day or other bands

I could never really get into Crimpshine. Might need to give it another try.聽

oh tons of bands, Foxboro Hot Tubs, The Network, The Longshot, The Coverups - oh no wait

More seriously though, I'd say that although I had known of these artists previously, Green Day still helped get me more immersed in the likes of The Clash, Generation X, The Who, David Bowie and Tom Petty, mostly as a result of their live covers and talking about their influences in interviews. The Who in particular. It's always been my dad's favourite band and well, I guess the link to Green Day created some great bonding-through-music experiences聽:)聽He was particularly impressed with their A Quick One, While He's Away cover, as am I.聽

The Who are a brilliant band. As my dad used to say, the quintessential rock band and I think I agree. It's hard to describe The Who as anything else other than a rock band, no further labels or qualifications needed. I think Billie must have got part of his flamboyant stage antics from them and Tre definitely seems to have taken inspiration from Keith Moon in some ways too. Though American Idiot (and 21CB) appear to be conceptually inspired by Tommy, which is a pivotal album no doubt, my personal favourite of theirs is Quadrophenia, which I think is a superb album. Truly a rock opera in every sense of the word. And the accompanying feature film is actually pretty decent too.聽

Mike no longer owns/runs Rudy's. He gave it up and the staff took it over. He has posted pics of himself popping in when he's in the area since

Being a boomer, I grew up with The Who, Bowie, The Clash, Ramones etc but my love for Green Day helps keep me in touch with newer artists I think. 聽Don鈥檛 remember how I first got into Frank Turner but def through GD for The Linda Lindas and Amyl And The sniffers. Dare I say, didn鈥檛 love Prima Donna when I saw them, 聽please forgive me @Montclare 馃槈

Besides their side projects, The Who (really love them and I don't know how I would have ended up listening to them if it hadn't been through Green Day), The Clash, The Ramones, Rancid, Jimmy Eat World after seeing them live opening for them, and The Living End (also started thanks to a video of them opening for Green Day). There might be more I'm forgetting about right now

Yeah, I saw PD support as well and didn't love them that much 馃

Other bands Green Day has directly influenced me to check out:聽

The Interrupters - not sure what the connection is here, but I definitely remember it being something to do with GD.聽

The Replacements - after Beej talked about them once (Here Comes A Regular is still one of my face songs of all time).聽

They're not for everyone, there's some of their stuff I can't get into either. I love "the sound of a new world being born" but I can't get into "duct tape soup"

Oh gosh, there are so many.聽 聽The Who is my all time favorite Classic Rock band because of the covers.聽 Queen, The Replacements.....just recently got into Poison Idea.聽 聽 聽 聽 I might make a massive, rambling list later but Dude Jr is yelling at me.聽

Probaby a lot. Directly led me to bands like The Offspring, Sum 41, Blink-182 and other bands like that. MCR and Weezer as well I guess. I would say I checked out bands like The Muffs, Cheap Trick, The beatles, The Who and many other bands, because of their influence on GD. Also lots of punk bands. I would say it all lead me to everything from that point indirectly (in the realm of rock and punk, not so much genres like Metal or other genres).

Oooo Husker Du for sure, and then from there, The Lemonheads聽

Bouncing Souls came via MCR for me as Frank Iero often talked about them.聽

There are a lot of similarities between the D眉 and GD, especially early on. The main riff from At The Library is very similar to the one from You鈥檙e a Soldier is a comparison that comes to mind.

Certainly adds up both of them being from New Jersey. The Souls were influential on a lot of bands. The heavy representation on Billie鈥檚 guitars is how they first hit my radar.

Funny enough I鈥檝e been listening to the Lemonheads a good bit lately; the self-titled record where Evan is backed up by Karl Alvarez and Bill Stevenson.聽
