I actually had that exact thought. What if these and some of the songs from Saviors were supposed to be the original album, as I can't really imagine most of these songs on the main album. Same with Fever and aren't One Eyed Bastard and Corvette Summer slightly older? Those 3 would fit with these songs better. I have always liked One Eyed Bastard ever since the leak, I like it more than about half of the songs. Gotta watch the video now.

Yeah, I think you are right. I think they probably wrote a bunch of songs for 1972, and few made it to Saviors but most got scrapped and now we are getting them this way.

Oh I definitely don’t blindly praise everything, and I’m not against discussion, I guess I’m just not massively negative and don’t feel the need to discuss if i dislike something in the same way a lot of people do. I’d rather spend my energy on stuff i like

and I can’t be the only one who thinks on here that more often than not people are just moaning cause they can haha

I think you’re conflating critiques with negativity. As many issues as I personally have with the band’s material since RevRad, there’s still a lot to like when you look through that lens.

In other words, someone can admit a song is bad on its own merit but still enjoy it for what it is (me with almost the entirety of Dos 😅)

I think it can be both. I think critique is absolutely fair, and no one should just blindly go along with anything without any criticism or investigation. But I have also seen a lot of people in this fandom who seem to just enjoy being angry and finding fault, to the point of personally attacking the band members and other fans. It's one thing to critique someone's work; it's quite another to just be a miserable person who hates everything.

After having heard it about twenty times, I deeply fell in love with Underdog. „Life is too short to be normal!“😃 And those guitars…!🥰

Ballyhoo is definitely my favorite from this. I really dig it.

This was really anticlimatic, I must admit.
However, if it's true that these songs were made during the tour last year I really understand why the "lack of effort" may bre present in these songs.
I was really hoping that the acoustic versions was "new", and not just the original recording minus the rest of the instruments.

Ballyhoo is easily my favorite.

Hmmm only like Ballyhoo really.

The rest are a but uninspired. “Fuck off”is a bit cringey and try hard. “Stay Young” reminds me too much of ‘Whatshername’
As B-sides they are fine, i can see why they didn’t make the album.

But Ballyhoo is great.

I wonder if maybe some of these songs were from the scrapped 1972 project? Like these got tossed aside when they decided to go in the direction that ultimately became Saviors?

Also, I don't think anyone has posted this new video we just got for One Eyed Bastard? I still love this song and now I love this video.

We've got a thread here for that -

These songs were not to bad for being b-sides, neither to good for a new album, so a Deluxe edition for them is reasonable

I enjoyed the songs overall, and I really liked the style of Underdog.

However, as a whole, the deluxe tracks give the impression that they were released more out of obligation than inspiration. I understand they’re B-sides for a reason. They don't quite hit the mark the main album does.

As a longtime fan who genuinely appreciates the band, I hope to see a future project with stronger lyrical depth. That’s the one element I feel has been missing lately. A lot of the material feels repetitive and doesn’t carry much meaningful messaging. It’s easy to grow tired of it quickly.

Still, I respect the effort and always look forward to what Green Day does next.

I respect and agree with you but I'm a tad unsure with the word 'obligation'. Imho I've always felt that Billie Joe's songwriting has always been inspired. What's in his head, what HE wants to convey, never what WE want to hear. What the band decide to release, whether the lyrics make sense or not, is their choice. They're not out to please us. FOAM is a prime example, unpopular maybe, but that's what the band wanted to release. Billie Joe said he wanted to experiment with other styles of music.

No artist ever intends to release uninspired songs but sometimes they may feel forced into doing that. And while I generally don't think Billie, or the band, does that, that's what I get from a track like Here Comes The Shock which imo was clearly released just because they needed to release a song for the NHL. Obviously I can't say that for sure cus I'm not Billie but that's just the vibe I get from that song specifically. These songs could be a similar thing where they had to release tracks for a Deluxe album because every new album seems to be getting a Deluxe release too. Of course, I'm not saying that is the case but it could be. The acoustics specifically feel very lazy to me.

Regarding FOAM, Billie was clearly into that album, to this day he still says that he likes that album. So despite my dislike of that album, I wouldn't say that was uninspired or made out of obligation (or to fuck over their label, which is a theory amongst some fans).

What' the name of that one song?   Ya know, the one that goes "stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young"?

I can't think of the title.

more lyrics include "stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young stay young"

This is a live reaction; I am listening as we speak (minus the acoustics, I don't have much of an opinion, I still love them as much as the originals. Well, I actually like Suzie more)

Stay Young: I actually really like it. Super repetitive, but Billie's voice is my favorite.

Fuck Off: Legit murder city. Atleast I already know how to play it on guitar loll

Underdog: Not as bad as Fever, but if you all have read my other posts, I despise fever. Def at the bottom, but not terrible

Rankings:

🥇Ballyhoo

🥈Smash It Like Belushi

🥉Suzie Chapstick (acoustic)

4. Stay Young

5. Fuck Off

6. Father to a Son (acoustic)

7. Underdog

I've only done one listen through the deluxe edition, but as others have said, I'm underwhelmed. Stay Young starts off pretty good, and then we get to the clunky hook. It's repetitive, and the song overall seems unfinished. Fuck Off....ugh it's not great. It's trying way too hard to be edgy. It just doesn't work. And thank you, everyone who said it sounds like Murder City! I knew it sounded like another GD song, but I couldn't place which one.

Smash It like Belushi is such a throwaway track. It's not bad; it's pretty catchy, but nothing special. One of those songs I'll forget about it and then go "oh yeah" when it comes up on shuffle. Ballyhoo, I actually like a lot more now. I think it's the strongest out of the bunch. It actually sounds like it could be on Saviors and feels like the most complete song. Underdog is pretty good too! I quite enjoyed that one.

The acoustic versions are disappointing. Are they really just the regular versions of the song with certain elements isolated or removed? No wonder they sound exactly like the originals. And why Father to a Son? The song is already a ballad. An acoustic version isn't really gonna do much for it.

Honestly, this deluxe release is pretty meh overall. Even if they wanted to include all these songs, I would've loved it if they included some live tracks of Saviors songs or maybe even some demos. That would make the release feel a bit more worth it to me.

I haven’t spun saviors in a long time, but my immediate reaction to these deluxe-o treats are the following:

all these songs would sound great live in a smaller setting a la pre-trilogy release shows!

Belushi: Love it! Just Green Day being fun Green Day!

Stay young: sounds a little like U2 meets whatsername. Really good ideas here, a little network like in the vocal styles, I can dig it!

F off: hmmm. The guitars and bass rip it up!  Might be a grower not a shower. It’s not that annoying, kinda fun. Will have to revisit this at a future date

Ballyhoo: I love it! Fun Green Day mode activated! Could have been included on the album.

the acoustic songs are just the drums and bass muted, ideally designed for content creators to record their own performances and hopefully get a lot more followers! Wooo!

Underdog: I love it! A healthy blend of nimrod and trilogy and would sound great performed live in a music club. I actually appreciate the difference in sound quality in the mix. Would be comfortable on the shenanigans comp.

Stay green, my people! Enjoy!

I’m surprised people aren’t more in love with Stay Young

I mean definitely repetitive, but let’s be real it’s GD

To me the song just sounds so nostalgic warm fuzzy and ugh.
so good.

You're not the only one. I love stay young and it's green day.  I'll take stay young than those three skippable songs from tré album(trilogy)
