Eli_1994 Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 Hi guys I seen a lot of people on the Internet talk about whether Green day being Pop Punk Or Punk Rock. What do you think. Quote
xWhatsername_ Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 I see and view their older stuff as being punk rock more than anything they released over the past 10-15 years or so stopping around american idiot and then warning had more of a “pop” punk sound, but I guess it’ll depend on how you also view it, everyone has a different opinion Quote
龑美優 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 They're a Pop Rock/Punk Punk band and this much is obvious if you've studied their sound and moved a few words around in the question. 1 Quote
Eli_1994 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 I also mean the new albums Like Father Of All, Revolution Radio, Are those punk to you or pop punk due to the instrument. @Liam The new stuff. Like Father of all revolution radio 21st Century Breakdown Quote
Popular Post HoneyEmerald Posted August 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 27, 2022 Green Day is Green Day I compare them to no other. And frankly I don’t give a sh** if they are pop punk or punk rock…. when a song sounds good a song sounds good. They have a lot of good sounds. 4 1 Quote
saintjimmy924 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 I'd call them punk rock but they aren't strictly punk rock. Certainly punk rock based, but not exclusively. Pop punk to me is stuff like Simple Plan, blink 182, New Found Glory, etc. Quote
pcj Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Their various side projects make them virtually unclassifiable. PG, Carry the Banner for eg, is in yer face hard core punk, outstanding. From FH on to the brilliance of The Network. Maybe a hard core punk, pop-punk, garage, rock and roll, techno-new wave band.😜 Quote
Eric Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 I do not understand why it is so hard to accept they are Pop Punk Quote
xWhatsername_ Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 I always loved green day and probably always will, it doesn’t matter what genre they are to me 1 Quote

The term pop punk is a little too open about it being the commercialized, easier to listen to version of punk so I can see why he wouldn’t like it. It’s spot on though. Quote
Rumpelstiltskin2000 Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 I just love Green Day’s sound whatever genre it is 3 Quote
pacejunkie punk Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 At this point I'd call them a punk influenced rock band 2 Quote
GuitarPunk94 Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 i would consider bands like neck deep or (some) blink lp's pop-punk but i dont know how you can describe greenday as pop-punk, they are much closer to punkrock than pop-punk 1 Quote
HAPPY ZOMBIE UNICORN Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 It all depends on your definition of pop punk. Some considers pop punk any form of mainstream punk rock emerged from the 90’s punk rock revival. In this case Green Day definitely belongs here. Others use pop punk to define those 00’s bands born from the commercial success of 90’s punk rock bands, usually having an even more polished and accessible sound. In this case Green Day sits in a different bucket. There is a clear generational, musical and stylistic difference between Green Day and bands such as Sum 41 or Simple Plan, so if we really need to use labels, I think it’s fair to have different labels for them. That said Green Day developed a quite unique sound during the year (remember how easily a certain bunch of kids which rhymes with land trolled us by replicating it?), and in the last 15 years got heavily influenced by other genres, mainly power pop. So hard to answer. 3 Quote
Montclare Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 I say they're a rock band who's punk at their core. 2 Quote
Popular Post PluckyJokerhead Posted August 29, 2022 Popular Post Posted August 29, 2022 In my eyes what happened was Green Day pretty much invented pop punk with Dookie, then as other bands (Blink 182 and everything similar that came after) were influenced by that and became popular they kind of developed the pop punk genre into it's own thing --meanwhile Green Day veered off course and continued to do whatever the fuck they wanted, releasing a folk punk album and then a punk rock opera for example. They're probably one of the most popular punk bands ever, so yeah - they're pop punk. But most of their music is actually pretty vastly different from most other music that you'd typically place under the 'pop punk' moniker. 6 Quote
Slave To The Network Posted August 30, 2022 Posted August 30, 2022 They're Green Day and I love them for who they are and what they have given us and that's what matters. I couldn't care less what specific genre box people want to put them in. 1 1 Quote

Red Posted August 30, 2022 Posted August 30, 2022 On 8/29/2022 at 7:46 PM, Eric said: Who really cares what he thinks, its just facts they are POP PUNK! Actually, that's just an opinion. I've always considered them to be punk rock. I think the term pop punk is better reserved for bands like All Time Low, We The Kings, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and Plain White Ts. All of these bands have a much more "approachable" or "friendly" sound than bands like Green Day. Yes, there's some pop punk influence in their overall sound, just like there's also power pop and garage rock but I think they've always had more in common when it comes to their attitude and sound with other punk rock bands, rather than pop punk bands. 1 Quote
That Dude Posted August 30, 2022 Posted August 30, 2022 Coincidently I am listening to "Blitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones as I read this. So....there is no difference. As much as Punk rallies against the system, it's part of said system. I believe it was a man called Billie Joe who said that "everybody wears a uniform". It's not punk rock to be punk rock. Quote
