Thoughts on this? Personally, I think this drama is overblown... I think Billie Joe can have opinions on the differences in quality between two female musician's music without it being sexist. It seems to me like he just doesn't like Ariana Grande's music, which is a valid opinion. Personally, I don't love Billie Eilish, but it's cool he does.

I’m not going to put any energy into this discussion. Obviously it’s way overblown. Seriously, you just can’t give or state your opinion without being bashed about it these days. He’s not uplifting one woman to bash the other. He just states his opinion on two musicians who happen to be female.

People, but especially reporters, have to stop reading too much into these things just to start a useless discussion.

I don't care. It wasn't the smartest move he's done to criticize a currently popular singer, but that's about it for me. What he said wasn't particularly offensive.

I think this comment sums it up pretty well

I mean, it’s probably just me, I get exposed this deep into this kind of ridiculous pop culture social media debate  only when it comes to this band, so I am not used to this (polished way to say I’m an old fart). But I am really surprised by the level of bullshit raised by these “Twitter scandals”.
On the other hand, if we had a reign of social media in 2004, when Johnny Rotten and Noel Gallagher were trashing Green Day with way worse words than this, we would have probably had a similar reaction from a small part of the GD teenager fanbase. I don’t think that with this one case I can judge an entire fandom or every teenager using social media.
It’s just how shitty this small but extremely noisy subculture is, just take it and move forward.

It was just a throwaway comment. Yeah, it was kind of badly phrased, but I doubt he meant to "compare" them. There are actual unpleasant cases of that and this isn't one.

I don’t really think his intention was put down another woman in there. It would be better if he didn't mention any specific name but I don't think he said that because of his personal dislike to someone. Twitter is a crazy place as it has always been. It’s a place full of over sensitive people who have a habit of overreacting. I thought it’s only like that in my country. It’s surprising for me seeing people care about these things that much in the US tbh. They are probably young people though.

Yes, it was hilarious too. There were people saying ”how dare he can speak about K-pop, does he even know what K stands for?!” and some people didn’t have any idea who he is but still angry to him lmao

The majority of the comments are supportive of billie tbh. Even peopel on buzz feed hate buzzfeed

Billie has thrown shade on hundreds of musicians before lmao. Suggesting that just because it's a female musician this time it's sexist (when it isn't even a harsh comment at all and isn't based on gender at all) is sexist in itself. The idea that someone saying they think one pop singer is better than another is offensive is fucking ridiculous.

This happens alot now. News outlets and pages like buzzfeed will make a massive deal out of maybe a single comment someone makes like here or make up so called discourse around a subject say a tv show or film from a few random comments on twitter. Its how they get views. Its clickbait and its so fucking tiresome

Billie Joe is 100% correct though...

Ariana Grande has an average of 7-8 various songwriters credited on each of her songs, unlike Billie Eilish who has two: her brother and herself.

One is a talented singer, model and icon, but the other is the real deal.

I agree with Billie in this case but this is a man who regularly says stuff which may or may not be considered controversial, this was really pretty tame and polite.  Sure he’s been up all night worrying 😂😂😂

I don't think it's sexist, maybe it would've been if he took more time shading her, but it was really a little throwaway comment, he probably didn't think very much about it, and considering that there are way more female pop stars than male pop stars, it's understandable that he mentioned a woman.

It's just unnecessary, stupid, a little boomer-ish, and wrong. Ariana Grande made one of the best albums of 2019 and has been making great songs since Dangerous Woman.

He just likes Billie best because of her name anyway :P

They should form a supergroup Billie2

I think given the general culture of famous women being pitted against one another, some were just quick to assume that’s what he was doing. I don’t think he did it with bad intent – I’ve always found him to be rather respectful of women and super supportive of female musicians, so I don’t think that’s what he meant at all. Still, it’s always best to just let praise stand on its own without putting someone down in the next breath, no matter who you’re talking about. At the end of the day I think it was just an offhanded comment blown out of proportion, though.

Nihilism will dictate that nothing matters so this don't matter too

Typical BuzzFeed 😂 He mentioned Ariana for relevant reasons, if a male artist had lost instead of Ariana I'm sure he would have said the exact same thing.

This. I think it's important to leave the website to it's own worth and not take the stuff they write too seriously. Then again many people do take them seriously and that pains me.
