Opening Bands

Ok, after the surprise high of the new release and seeing the Longshot live I am dying for great new music. And it's on the way with the new Interrupters album. Which brings up a good conversation/ debate (in my mind anyway) about which opening bands have been GD's best. It's a huge platform but few have been able to use it to break out into a mainstream career.

I can only think of several since I've been to a ton of shows and often either forget or just duck out on the openers, but who are the best (not including festival/established acts- Rancid, Blink, AFI etc.).

Obviously the Interrupters were awesome. I also remember the Riverdales, Dog Party, Superdrag, Jimmy Eat World, the Bavery, etc...who deserves to be at the top of the list?

I didn't like Best Coast in 2013, but I can really appreciate their music now. Dog Party were good, but nothing I was crazy about. I love the Interrupters, but I'm not crazy about their subject matter. It's very repetitive. I just finally got into their second album, now I'm gonna have some catching up to do with this new one. Maybe it'll take me another 3 years. Catfish and the Bottlemen were awful, sorry! Those are the four that I've seen live. Riverdales and Pansy Division kick ass.

To be honest I've never really got into any of their support bands. The only one I loved was New Found Glory, who were already one of my favourite bands anyway.

Tbh ive never liked any of GDs openers that ive seen except AFI. Buuut the band that opened for The Longshot in Toronto, Sam Coffey And The Iron Lungs were fuckin awesome. Id seen em previously and knew they were a great choice for the show. Something like a Thin Lizzy/Ramones combo. Rad band.

I passively listened to Against Me when they opened and thought they were pretty good but I haven’t followed up with them since. I liked what I heard though.

Catfish and the bottlemen were dope. And I enjoyed The Trashbags on their tour with the Longshot.

The only bands I saw open for them were Catfish and the Bottlemen and Dog Party, neither of which impressed me. They've had opening bands that I was already a fan of (Franz Ferdinand, the Bravery), but the only opening band that I ever checked out due to their connection with Green Day is Prima Donna, who I really like.

I've had to endure Frank Turner opening for them not once but twice, mind-numbingly boring . Don't understand why they'd choose him at all. Loved Prima Donna because they're fun and have cool music, and Joan Jett of course. I know the Interrupters were like, technically good, but all ska songs sound identical so it was boring sorry :P

Really I think they often choose quite mediocre acts. Like you'd expect more well known ones or if not some really great less well known ones. I think they don't have the best taste in smaller bands, they make very high standard music themselves but seem to be easily impressed by smaller acts who are nothing special. Seems to be a slightly better selection on US legs though, would've loved to see Against Me!.

Against Me is hands down the best band to open for green day! I was never at a GD/AG show but I've seen Against Me a few times, my first of which was a basement show in Binghamton back in 2002 right as they were starting to blow up, there's footage of the show on youtube, it's great!

I saw GD play with Samiam, My Chemical Romance, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and then I saw them on Warped Tour, but I'm not gunna count warped tour bands. Those other bands didn't do much for me though. I know back in the 90's they toured with The Riverdales, and I like them. Didn't they also tour with Mr T Experience? MTX is the 2nd best band they've toured with.

oh and I saw The Trash Bags on the Longshot tour and I couldn't stand them. Way too sleazy.

openers I've seen

My Chemical Romance (2005) - don't remember  much unfortunately

AFI (2010) -  enjoyed them

Best Coast (2013) - 0 memory (had to look up who opened)

Against me (2017)-  enjoyed

CatFish and the BottleMen (2017) - there okay

Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs (2018) (The Longshot ) enjoyed

while making sure I had correct bands and dates I found their American idiot tour on wiki.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idiot_World_Tour

I didn't realize how much they toured. 3 different Legs of North American dates.  insane!

AFI was alright.

Against Me had problem with their sound. We were able to hear the music, but not so much the singer.

CatFish and the BottleMen was boring.

The Interrupters with their ska music isn't my type at all, but the band did know how to intertain the crowd. (I didn't saw the band as the opening act for GD, but as the act after SWMRS back in december.)

Sam Coffey was boring and they had the same, but worst, problem as Against Me. Don't ask me what were the lyrics, we didn't hear the singer.

I've only seen GD twice with Best Coast and Dog Party.

I absolutely hated Best Coast. I just don't like their music and I found their set boring.

Dog Party was good and I felt the type of music they make matches up well with what GD does.

I would've loved to see the tour where AFI opened. That sounds killer. It would be so cool if GD managed to team up with a band like Marmozets or The Struts. I think they would fit well.

When I saw them in 2005, My Chemical Romance was the opener. I was already of fan of their, so bonus for me that I got to see 2 bands I loved that night. Last year was Catfish and the Bottleman and I was not impressed with them. I actually wish that The Interrupters were the opener for last summers North American run.

AFI would have been awesome to see.

I forgot about MCR- so that's one band that made it big. If the Interrupters continue on their trajectory then they'll be the second. Weird how they've had so many openers and only a couple successfully launch to the next level afterward...

Agreed. The industry is so strange that way.

I think by the time MCR joined that tour, they had “made it”. FUSE tv was playing them on a constant rotation and I believe that was MCR’s last tour cycle before recording The Black Parade. (Huge MCR fan here.)

2009 - opening band was Jet - I enjoyed them.

2014 - Soundwave Festival - so you can't count Alice in Chains - but really enjoyed them.

2017 - The Interrupters - loved them - they were heaps of fun.

2009 - Prima Donna - I think they're great, still listen to some of their songs.
2010 - Frank Turner - Some good songs, he writes good lyrics and I like that he was a bit different.
2010 - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - can't complain about Joan Jett. She kicked ass.
2010 - Paramore - Was already a fan of Paramore, was great to see them live.
2013 - All Time Low - meh. Not into it. Probably my least favourite support act that I've seen.
2013 - Kaiser Chiefs - Was already a fan. I love them. Not "rock" enough for a lot of people (including Kerrang who pretended they weren't even there in their gig review) but they put on a really good show.
2017 - The Interrupters - I liked them, pretty quirky. Still listen to a few songs.
2017 - Rancid - Knew a handful of songs beforehand, they were great to listen to live.

I am super bitter that Glasgow was cancelled because my current obsession, Slaves, were due to support them and I'm pretty annoyed that they never got to play to that audience. I just love them and think they deserve to be big.

I forgot they've had Kaiser Chiefs, shame it wasn't at any of my shows since they're great! Hope they have them again.

I saw them support Foo Fighters as well! Ricky Wilson is a great frontman :D

The funny thing is that MCR even kind of got more popular than GD, at least judging by the craziness of their fandom. Every tiny hint that they could reunite goes viral. It's interesting to see that their fandom is still huge five years after they broke up. I seriously hope they will reunite one day, I love their stuff and The Black Parade is probably my favorite non-Green-Day-album.

So yes, MCR was hands down the best opening act they ever had. The Interrupters never really grew on me unfortunately. I enjoyed Rancid though!

I don't know that they really got bigger than GD. I think it was more that THAT fan base got really attached to them - almost like it was a cult - and when they disbanded it caught everyone off guard because the media (even Gerard) kept talking about the 5th album being recorded. I took it hard. It took me weeks and many read-throughs of Gerard's letter to fully comprehend that it was over. But it wasn't until last year when listening to Frank on a podcast, that I really understood why it ended when and how it did.

There is a large portion that are still believing that a 2019 reunion will happen - I, personally, don't think it will - and the multitude of Kerrang!, NME, Rocksound and AP articles that latch on to every small hint only adds to the hope and subsequent let down.

Anyways - back on topic!

Joan Jett would have been awesome to see with Green Day!

There’s no way MCR got bigger than GD. MCR seems to have a really dedicated fan base and more of their fans were/are probably diehard fans but GD has a wider fan base.

Openers I’ve Seen

Against Me! - they’re great

Catfish & The Bottlemen-I really enjoyed their set but rub me the wrong way as people. Not sure why. But I didn’t take it as a good sign that GD barely pranked them on the last show:

The Trashbags (longshot)- I really enjoyed them after seeing them a few times.

Frank Turner - I didn’t see him open for GD but I’ve seen him a lot and he puts on one hell of a show. I don’t love him as a person but he had like 15-20 really good songs and is very high energy

The Interrupters- I’m not usually into ska but they really grew on me. I like their lyrics a lot and they’re fun. It weirds me out though that the singer isn’t the frontman. It makes it harder for me to feel connected to the band.

This lmao. A random band member who isn't the singer immediately getting on the mic to say generic crowd rallying stuff between each song while the singer stood there saying nothing didn't work for me :P

Did Against Me! get pranked for their last show?

You could tell how well they got on with The Interrupters, so much so that Billie co-wrote a song off their new record.
