BucksCoEric Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Heres a game i thought would be fun for us to play. What is the worst thing youve heard someone say about green day? It could be from a review of their music from a magazine article or a youtube comment one one of their music videos or just something you heard one of your family members or friends say. For me im pretty sure the worst thing ive heard was someone in my high school call them emo fags who made shitty music that im a loser for listening to.
Hermione Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 I got into them when I was 19 so luckily I was old enough never to hear such bullshit as that irl. Outside the internet I don't think I've ever heard someone slag them off. The worst thing would probably be when people misinterpret them and think their songs are in support of shitty things. I've seen someone seriously argue that it was hypocritical of Billie to say "no racism, no sexism, no homophobia" during Minority, because that song is supposed to stand up for minority views and now the majority of people aren't racists/sexists/homophobes the people that still are should be supported by the song and feel accepted at Green Day shows. Must be the worst . Or that American Idiot is in support of conservatives or more anti democrat than anti republican. And many times I've seen people say they used to be about not giving a fuck about anything and anti pc and back in the day they would've been anti sjw and they've changed now. When people say they suck and are sellouts etc it's usually just funny but that stuff is maddening.
Karl Karlson Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Billie Joe using a British accent...never heard it on any studio albums, during live performances or interviews. Never got the jokes about it.

Never got the jokes about it. Some of his vowels can be kind of English sounding, and the way he drops H's (I 'ope you had the time of your life) is very Cockney. Just random little things like (sorry to use this as an example ) at iHeart when he was going "this is a joke" the way he says joke is weirdly English sounding. I think it's really just some random similarities between a Californian and English accent but it can sound quite pronounced when he sings. Definitely doesn't actually sound like an English person singing though
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Read a review after a show I've been to last year and the writer had absolutely nothing negative to say about the show except for one thing - that Billie looks like shit from all the partying. I've heard worse things (of course lol), but this wins in the magazine article category, simply because it was such an unnecessary comment to make in an otherwise very positive article.
SumDay Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Back when I was 13/14 y/o my cousin said 'everything they made since AI sounds the same'. I was so pissed my stomach started hurting
Daddy. Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 That when the end of September comes around the tired old "WAke UP BILLY JOE!11!" becomes very relevant to my friends and family.

Just an objectively false statement too
pouty bitch Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 In regards to their music, my dad always says GD is a "kiddie's punk band that are trying to be The Clash." In regards to the band themselves, I had a 'friend' once who told me that they "look like a bunch of rapists." I cut her out of my life shortly after that.
AlissaGoesRAWR Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 When I was in eighth grade we were allowed to listen to our portable CD players ( retro) at the end of the day when class was over and we were waiting for dismissal. I remember a kid in my class told me “My dad thinks those British bastards need to go back to where they came from” when he saw I was listening to American Idiot. Then my substitute teacher said “all of their songs sound exactly the same.” I hadn’t had the CD very long so I’m pretty sure that’s when I decided I liked the band because it did such a good job of pissing everyone off just by existing.
Iva Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 I got into them weeks before turning 12 back in 1995 and well, it was...interesting. The idea of cute, little girls with overly controlling parents listening to LOUD MUSIC and the said controlling parents also enjoying it was shocking. That, plus the band looked so "cartoony", had a "bug-eyed singer". The first things from back then, at the top of my head... "Is your daughter also a satanist, Mirjana? My son listens to that HORRIBLE BAND where the singer has a TINY CROSS TATTOO AND IT'S UPSIDE DOWN...he told me that she likes them, too!" - mom's former workmate and the mother of one of my school friends. - "The band led by a tiny spitter, Billie Joe Armstrong..." - a quote from an actual teenage magazine, I confronted the author, who now runs a vile celeb gossip paper, in 2011 and he claimed that his boss hated Green Day. Nah, you did.

Chin for a Day Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 It always annoys me when people say all their songs sound alike, they don't. Hubby called them a garage band after the show on Friday, that annoyed the piss out of me. Then he said how much he liked the cover of I fought the law, so he was forgiven. Then he said Billie should have stood on a box. I think he likes annoying me.
Iva Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Correction for your hubby: all the songs of their copycats sound alike.

I've always been intrigued by this statement as I just can't spot it, I guess it must be because I'm not a native English speaker and it goes over my head. However I read somewhere Redundant was one of the songs where his english accent is the most obvious, can you confirm that haha ? Anyways, about the topic, here in Belgium Green Day is not really esteemed. Many consider them as an average band for teenagers who plays easy music. They find them at most entertaining but their music can't be taken seriously, when they know/remember who they are. I wouldn't state everyone thinks like that but most do. Sooo, I've heard many bad things about Green Day

Christian's Inferno! Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 I think on the trilogy, Billie sounds more American than "British". Although tbh I'm not really sure he sounds THAT British really
Slave To The Network Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 My friends saying stuff like "But they just sound angsty, like they're trying to be so cool." or stuff about how they think Billie looks weird and not attractive at all. "Oh this picture of him is better I guess because I can't really see his face." "He looks like a cartoon character" or "a punk hobbit". That last one is kind of hilarious even though it's completely false, but still. There was this one kid in high school who once said to me "Billie Joe is a terrible singer! How can you like Green Day?" Keep in mind this is a person who made the most garbage "music" with just random background noise and shit. Like he was trying to be some kind of modern George Antheil (he is responsible for Ballet Méchanique, which used giant electric fans, silence, and like 13 player pianos - look him up). This kid couldn't sing worth a damn either. Regardless, I remember crying about it when I got home! Lol! I always get so emotional when someone insults Green Day or Billie even though they themselves probably couldn't care less about something like that. Haha!

Sooo, I've heard many bad things about Green Day I can't hear it in Redundant particularly. He never actually sounds English in any given song imo, there's just random words/syllables he pronounces in an English sounding way (that's really probably just a Californian/Billie way but happens to share a similarity with how an English person would say it). So it's never like "he sounds English", more like "why did he say 'ope like he's from London" haha
DeJennsitized Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 I dunno about the worst, but certainly something that annoys me is when people who know I love them say things like 'oh I loved them when I was at school', '13-year-old me loves Green Day!!' like, implying I'm childish for still liking them saying all their songs sound the same is another really annoying one.
