desertrose Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 We recently mentioned that Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and his pal Jesse Malin played a covers show on New Year’s Eve at Malin’s Lower East Side club Berlin, with an all-star lineup that included appearances by The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson, The E Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt, Blondie’s Clem Burke, The Hold Steady’s Tad Kubler, Jesse Malin collaborator Don DiLego, Billie Joe’s sons, and others throughout the night. We posted a short video of Billie Joe & co playing The Replacements’ “Color Me Impressed” (with Tommy Stinson), and we’ve now got good quality videos of almost the entire set, taken by Dana Distortion. They did over 20 covers, including a few Ramones songs and a couple Clash songs, plus The Plimsouls’ “A Million Miles Away,” Dead Boys’ “Sonic Reducer,” Paul Collins’ The Beat’s “Walk Out of Love,” Tom Petty’s “American Girl,” New York Dolls’ “Pills,” The Kinks’ “Father Christmas,” “The Undertones’ “Teenage Kicks,” Cheap Trick’s “Surrender,” Wreckless Eric’s “Whole Wide World,” Blondie’s “One Way or Another,” and more. Billie Joe and Jesse mostly split vocals but a few songs had guest lead singers, including Jesse’s D Generation bandmate Richard Bacchus for D Generation’s “Capitol Offender,” East Village vet Tom Clark on the NY Dolls song, and Berlin bartender Amanda Cross on the Blondie song. That Dude Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 It is TIME for a Rodeo Queens reunion, folks! I haven't had a chance to watch any videos but I know this is quality stuff. Rodeo Queens! Rodeo Queens! But a clean and sober RQ.
deleteduser7593 Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Every single song here could easily be a Green Day song. You can hear it cleary when Billie Joe's on the microphone. They're like... a perfect mix of everything I love in music. Maybe that's why Green Day's my favourite band
deleteduser7593 Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 ''Amanda!''. Look at Billie Joe's face... Is she... AMANDA? X0

Billie Joes Eyelids Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Great videos but I wish I could hear the vocals. Is it just me?

Hermione Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Haven't watched yet but it's just so awesome that they did this! Looking forward to being able to see the whole thing.

Am I the only one that thinks he’s just not very good (I respect their friendship and all but there’s a reason he’s a musician you’ve otherwise never heard of). He’s just made good musical connections. Owning a club was his best career move.

Not at all bothered that they never made a go of the Rodeo Queens thing.

The story of how it came about really explains it all. It was totally half assed (though I like the explanation for the name, I’m so dumb I didn’t pick up on it myself)

gaslight13 Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 I'm truly impressed with Jesse Malin's ability to make musical connections. He's seriously friends with everybody who's anybody in rock music and I hear nothing but good things about him. I saw him live once as an opener and really enjoyed his set (though don't care for his albums). But he's not really even on par with some of the small, slowly growing local artists that I follow let alone a band of GD's caliber.

The songs I like by him are lesser known tracks that can't even be found on iTunes and honestly I can't remember their titles. "Black Haired Girl" maybe. and a cover of "Don't know much about history..." So yeah, he doesn't have an amazing discography. But the Rodeo Queens.....100 percent of their stuff is perfect! They have one song. and it's amazing. LOL You guys arguments against him joining are the reasons he SHOULD join. Green Day would make him sound a lot better, haha. I was joking about him joining them anyway. I'm over the whole Jason White "official" status at this point and am very happy with the Billie / Mike / Tre dynamic they have. Back on topic, I would have LOVED to have been there. Also, this shows that Green Day and/or its members truly never stop. Maybe the Rodeo Queens will never do anything else. But it does seem like a good time for Green Day to bang out a different kind of record, see what works and what doesn't without the pressure of ALBUM XIII to drive them insane. Something brand new. Not The Network or Tubbies or Queens. Something totally new and different, and use it as an inspiration point for the next big record, which kind of has a lot riding on it. Green Day have went up and down so many times. The next record needs to be mindblowing.
Spike Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 This is awesome. And Billie singing Surrender will never ever get old.
jengd Posted January 9, 2018 Posted January 9, 2018 So great to see Billie having fun performing, just shows what a love he has for it given how recently they finished a very long tour. These sessions always make me want a cover album from Green Day as I think they do great covers but I don't expect to ever see on.

Green Day have already recorded enough covers to make a pretty awesome covers playlist if you were so inclined.

Yeah, totally but there so many I would still like to see them do and some, like the Surrrender/Bastards of the Young I would like a better version of.
