J Armstrong Posted December 14, 2017 Posted December 14, 2017 Does anyone know what microphone did Billie use to record his vocals on American Idiot?
Jimmy Strummer Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 Not sure about Idiot, but I know from an old EMusician article that for 21CB he used a Telefunken U47, and Chris Dugan (engineer) ran that into a Chandler LTD-1 and a Retro Instruments 176 limiting amp into an analog tape multi-track and then into Pro Tools. But if you don't have the money for any of that gear (and I'm assuming you don't as a Telefunken mic alone will set you back thousands of dollars), just take Billie's and Chris's general advice on capturing vocals from that same article: just get a good condenser mic with a nice crispness on the high-end, add some light compression (something that's warm, clean, and rich without being too noticeable), and in terms of EQ, roll off everything under 80Hz and give a slight bump in the 110 range. From there, just put a good pop filter in front of your mic and be sure to sing about eight inches away from it. Otherwise, a lot of it is just the way he performs in the studio, man. [ Source ]
Spike Posted December 16, 2017 Posted December 16, 2017 Judging by the videos from Heart Like A Hand Grenade it was a Neumann U87. Sounds quite similar to the aforementioned U47. But yeah, what Jimmy Strummer said.
J Armstrong Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 thanks for your answers! After some research I found out it was a Neumann M49, which was discontinued in 1974
