pouty bitch Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Okay, so this is my first time creating a thread on here. Sorry if there is already one like it - I searched, but I couldn't find anything. This is a thread for the songs that you personally think stand out far above the rest of Green Day's work. I'll start: (BTW, I'm being extremely brutal and only including a few of my very favourites.) Going to Pasalacqua - I just think it's an amazing song considering how young they were. I love the melodies and it's just so catchy and memorable. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? - I love it. It's by far the best song on Kerplunk, imo, and it's always been my favourite from that album. Armatage Shanks - When people mention Insomniac, this is the first song I think of. It just defines the whole album, for me. Stuart and the Ave. - The lyrics and the bass intro. Enough said. Minority - One of the first GD songs I got into. I've heard it so many times and it just never gets old. Letterbomb - Stands out above the rest of AI, both live and on the record. Restless Heart Syndrome - Such a beautiful song. I love how it starts off nice and quiet, and goes powerful at the end. Bang Bang - Best song they've released since 21stCB, imo. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. Honourable Mentions: Paper Lanterns, 2000 Light Years away, No One Knows, Longview, Basket Case, Hitchin' A Ride, Waiting, Ha Ha You're Dead, American Eulogy, Kill the DJ.
Thatsername Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I agree with your choices of Stuart and the Ave, Letterbomb and Bang Bang. Here's my list: Welcome to Paradise - It's a song that is very "Green Day" for me, it feels like there is so much of themselves in that song, I love it. I like the Kerplunk version even more than the one on Dookie. Longview - If I remember correctly, it was the first Green Day song I ever heard, it will always be one of my favourites. Mike at his best. No One Knows - Such a wonderful, deep, wise and sad song that shows how talented this band was at such a young age. Amazing. I would kill to hear it live one day. Macy's Day Parade - It's the perfect example how they broadened their horizon musically in the Warning era. The line "And I'm thinking about a brand new hope, the one I've never known. Cause now I know it's all that I wanted" can be read in so many different ways that it always gives me goosebumps. Jesus of Suburbia - A masterpiece from start to finish, their "Bohemian Rhapsody". I know that some think Homecoming is better, but I prefer JoS. Whatsername - I love how the song is building up, I can feel the love, the sadness, the desparation. Please play it live at one of my shows one day. East Jesus Nowhere - It's the summary of the whole 21CB album for me. The whole story in one song with all the emotions. A surreal experience live. Brutal Love - Maybe the most underrated GD song of all time. It's perfection, especially live. *melting* Somewhere Now and Forever Now - The two Nows are some of the best GD songs ever made with some of Billie's most honest, personal and best lyrics. Those two alone put RevRad in the top 4 of my favourite GD-albums. Still Breathing - It means a lot to me personally after a very hard time struggling with a disease. I've never felt more connected with them in any other song. Ever. Might be my favourite song.
CherryBombs&Gasoline Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Ok, that's tough because I love most of their songs. But I'll give it a try: Who Wrote Holden Caulfield - Pure Green Day. It's a very underrated song and my favourite on Kerplunk. She - This is my favourite song from Dookie. It's catchy, it's fun and in my opinion, it's even a little bit better than Basket Case. I think a lot of people can identify with the lyrics of the song: We become someone who we don't want to be because we want to satisfy the expectations of society. I love the combination of insecurity, anger and defiance on this record. Bab's Uvula Who: I like many songs on Insomniac, but I think that this one captures the essence of this record like no other track. It's just SO angry. Scattered - I've discovered my love for this song just very recently. It's my favourite track on Nimrod, which I consider one of their most consistent albums besides AI and Dookie. Again, the combination between the melancholic lyrics and the catchy melody make this song prefect. I like that Nimrod deals with all these serious topics but still makes you want to dance. American Idiot - Probably my all time favourite. This song is flawless, just like the rest of the album. Angry, ironic...Green Day at their very best. Letterbomb - It was great to hear this one live. It has one of the best lyrics on AI. Give me Novacaine - This song is SO underrated! It's one of the best songs on AI. I love it and would die to hear it live one day. Bang Bang - I think that this is the best single that they have released in years, probably the best since the AI-era. Unlike some people, I really like the lyrics of the song. And the drum solo is just awesome. Forever Now - A masterpiece! Those who say that the band has become lazy should listen to this song.
RedundantIdiot Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Armatage Shanks- after hearing it live it made me want to listen to Insomniac again Letterbomb- it took me a while to like this song, but its now one of my most played Boulevard of Broken Dreams- One of my favourites. It is timeless Bang Bang- one of their best lead singles and one of the best songs they've released since AI Basketcase- a timeless classic Forever Now- despite being nearly 7 minutes long, it is one coherent piece of music and is so damn good live Welcome to Paradise- one of their best early songs Hitchin a Ride- I love the bass and I want to dance to it Whatsername- my favourite album closing song Brutal Love- my favourite from the trilogy
IcyMoffatt Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Difficult choices I must say, but here is my list: Boulevard of Broken Dreams: A very powerful song that will never gets old. You get a different feeling from the album when it is played live, I love this song so much. Bang Bang: One of the best singles GD ever released. It's very catchy and fast, with lyrics that critized the society... everything that I love in a punk song. Troubled Time: Dark song, but I love it. Amazing melody. Still Breathing: Song of revival, song of hope. I felt really connected to it since the first time I heard it. Minority: Funny song, really catchy. The melody is amazing. 21 Guns: It's a great song on the album, but it is even better live and amazing with the cast of American Idiot. Basketcase: Iconic single that catched my attention on Green Day when I was 7 years old. Maybe my first ever rock/punk song that I loved in life. Good Riddance: Even if it is a sad song, you can interpret it in so many different ways. A GD concert can't end without it. Forever Now: I used to dislike it, but it grew on me so much. When it's played live, it's amazing. I feel like entering Billie's personal bubble each time. Welcome to Paradise: One of the best early songs.
Caroline Truong Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 My stand out GD's songs: 1.Whatsername: Most beautiful and emotional song, I love when every time Billie sangs this song he really cried. It make me cried it really great for someone you really love move away or kindle the relationship. 2. She- epic moving song 3. welcome to P: this is very good feeling song, when you are down.. 4. nice guys finish last: just funny song 5. Basket case: Now matter where I am or go?.. This song always stick with me.. 6. forever now: the hope for future song. 7. still breathing. Life is good 8. Gave me Novacaine: This very sexual song.(I don't know what it is about Billie voice) make me thing that..
TimmyChunks Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Jinx/ Haushinka- the wavecrest of Nimrod- the sequencing of these songs and the transition just sends chills down my spine. It's so good. And it's a genius transition- the Insomniac-esque punk bleating of Jinx blending into the thunder and conquest of Haushinka. They've had a lot of great moments in their albums, but this was the backbone of Nimrod and between the album placement (kicking off the second half of the record) and blending (seamless transition between the songs), it couldn't have been executed any better.
UNICORN VOMIT Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Waiting - to me when I hear it I think he is a genius.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 All The Time - such a cool song with great lyrics
Caroline Truong Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 King for A Day..(don't fight me on this!)..

When the album came out I liked it of course, but I don't think I viewed it as an immediate standout. With time, I've come to realize this song is pure genius, it's incredible. Pandora apparently agrees with me since this comes on the PHGP channel (the best on Pandora, in my opinion) every time, and I've never skipped it. One of their most underrated songs in my opinion.

Wow, what an awesome effort you put in there, one freakin' song. Here is mine: Longview - it is the song that started this crazy ride Scattered - Simply because it has always been one of my favorites. Church on Sunday - Good relationships are not really hallmark cards, they are alot of work and alot of compromises. This song captures that perfectly Whatsername - It is just such a beautiful, powerful song that captures how our memories can affect us. Plus, I think this is possibly Billie's greatest vocal performance. Still Breathing - This song actually does help me get through some things. When I find myself getting upset or frustrated I listen to it and realize things are not as bad as I first thought. Forever Now - Just simply the best live song in their catalog.
Jonas01 Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 The best top 3 Greeb Day songs in my opinion. 1. Jesus of Suburbia. 2. Basket Case. 3. Restless Heart Syndrome.
emmericanidiot Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Insomniac, Nimrod and 21CB have always stood out for me as the best albums lyrically speaking. As far as standout songs go, it's probably (in no particular order) 21 Guns, Homecoming, Who Wrote Holden Caulfield and Walking Contradiction.
