Did Green Day steal the melody for the X-Kid chorus from a Canadian boy band?

As a 90s kid I grew listening to The Moffatts and came across a song where the chorus is IDENTICAL to X-Kid. Have a listen:

I wouldn't say it's identical, there are some similitudes indeed, but that's a very common chord progression too. So no, I don't think they stole the melody.

No. Bits of songs sound like bits of other songs all the time. There's examples of it for literally every music act out there. Hell the verses of X-Kid sound a bit like Father and Son by Cat Stevens but is that stolen? Probably not (although it's more likely they'd have heard that and inadvertently recycled it than a Canadian boyband's song :P), it's just the nature of music that the same melodies crop up in more than one song sometimes.

There are only so many chord progressions. The one in this song is common and you will find thousands of songs using it.

The chorus isn't identical, a distant resemblance I'd say. Both singing and instrumental parts in X-Kid are rather far from those in the chorus of this song from the Moffatts.

I know it's a common chord progression, but I'm talking about the melody.

If you listen to the first chorus on the Moffats song, and the second time they sing "Misery is what I feel when you're not around so I can't heal'

and the listen to X-Kid "Bombs away, here goes nothing the shining's over, hey x-kid, bombs away"

Same chord progression, same melody, same key, almost same syllables. Pretty big coinky dinky.

However, Green Day have stolen the title of this track in "Warning" (album) lol! :P

C'mooon

I've studied music and played and sung a bit, no, I don't see any of a real similarity. But if you're so convinced, I guess I can't really change that

Edit : and it's "the shouting's over."

How can you not see the similarity? It's so obvious when the moffats singer sings 'And I can't heel, misery' the second time and Billie 'The Shinings over, hey x-kid'. It's the EXACT same lol. I'm sure Billie just heard it somewhere and it stuck in his head and he thought he came up with it lol.

I think you are grasping here. I honestly don't hear the similarities. There are plenty of GD songs that you can hear it, this isn't one of them. Plus, I highly doubt Green Day knows who The Moffatts are.

They "borrowed" the opening riff to Picture Book and Ray Davies said he loved what they did with it.

It happens all the time. LEd Zeppelin is notorious for "borrowing riffs"

PLus, when GD does more than borrow they have given credit, such as Brutal Love and Still Breathing

I'm sorry, but I've died laughing right now: 1) it's not the exact same, and 2) I do not think at all it happens this way when you write a song. I've written a few for fun, the melody is something very personal you come up with and you immediately feel it. No way you can not know it's something you haven't heard before even approximately.

Wow I've been singing "the shinnings over"

absolutely. They also stole Warning from The Kinks and disrespected the entirety of UK by blatantly ripping off Oasis in BLVD of Broken Dreams (more like STOLEN dreams)

I despise Liam Gallagher so that one counts as direct action

Eventually we will run out of music and new cords and so on, sometimes accidents can happen and something may sound similar

I've seen both, but the majority of Lyric videos have it as 'Shining':

I've tried and tried, but never managed to hear that Oasis song in Boulevard of broken dreams.  There is one track on Shennanigans though, that sounds very similar to a Blondie song ( can't remember details at the moment).

I don't even think it sounds that similar.

I do hear the similarities but I don't think it's identical or similar enough to say that they stole it

Regarding the lyrics, I'm pretty sure it's "shouting". It definitely sounds like it to me.And it makes more sense.

OMFG I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THIS INFORMATION

Mind. Blown. And I'm wondering why I never noticed it before

The lyric booklet says "shouting".

Me neither. As for the Shenanigans track, it's a mix of demos and covers. I' don't know Blondie's songs, but looking on the album's booklet, "Outsider", "Tired Of Waiting For You" and "I Want To Be On TV" are mentioned as covers.

I was of course being sarcastic.

OMG! YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT MY FAVORITE BAND EVER! THE MOFFATTS ARE MY LIFE!!! (Now you all know where my username is coming from!)

And no, Green Day didn't steal/copy The Moffatts. I've been listenning to Misery over a million times since I was 12 years old and there is no similarities with X-Kid.

But, if you really want a similarity between X-Kid and another Moffatts' song, here is for you Raining in my Mind. Just listen to the first few notes.

It's just a coincidence. Chapter One: A New Beginning was released in the USA, but never performed well over there. I really doubt Billie would have listen to the Moffatts, too much a shitty pop band for his taste (unless he used to listen to the band when they were kids with their country music albums).

Edit: If you want to go further, The Moffatts' Misery was released in 1999, while Green Day's Misery was released in 2000. (A lot of bands have songs called Misery.) Even weirder, both Warning and Submodalities (The Moffatts' last album) were released on the same date: October 3rd 2000.

Edit 2: I forgot to add that Submodalities has a song called Bang Bang Boom, but it has nothing in common with GD's Bang Bang. It just happenned that both songs have almost the same title.
