It's a fun and catchy song for a start, and it's not meant to be taken as seriously as some people seem to be taking it. I'm not saying it's the best song on the album but it's not nearly as bad as some people are making out. I'd definitely have it ahead of song like "Say Goodbye"

Youngblood is great and I don't really understand the criticism it gets, catchy and fun and even has some killer lyrics like "She's the cedar in the trees of Minnesota" and "fuck you I'm from Oakland". But Say Goodbye is the best And I'm also in the Dos fanclub

Hero_Of_The_Hour Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 Ah Youngblood. The shittiest example of cut and paste on the album. I fondly remember the "feedback" I got when I said the song sounded disjointed (not least the "Fuck you I'm from Oakland" line making zero sense), as though one half of the song were scrapped/left over and rewritten lyrics from She's A Rebel with a few more added only for Billie to later say it is an old song he has rewritten. Yeah...she's the salt of the earth and she's dangerous, she's my weakness, fucking genius, swear to God and I'm not even superstitious etc. Of course if they indeed are scrapped lyrics from She's a Rebel then the "Fuck you I'm from Oakland" would make sense because Amanda/Whatsername is from Oakland and Billie (or maybe originally intended to be Jesus of Suburbia) is not so she may perceive him to be weaker or whatever the line "are you broken like I'm broken", before "Fuck you I'm from Oakland" suggests.

See, it is Shakespeare. Sex, Drugs and Violence/english math and science is simply Christopher Marlowe

Really nice and poetic way of describing his wife's heritage, as being like the wise and Lebanese cedar tree in the forests of Minnesota. Also makes me smile just because of how much he always like to talk about his family's heritage and where they're from. He's proud of his wife and it shines through in the song. Do people really not like that line???

Marki. Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 I'm not a big fan of Youngblood, but "she's the cedar..." is definitely my favourite line from the song

Do people really not like that line??? I was actually making a joke, it wasn't meant to start a serious conversation. However, in my opinion, the entire song in general, that line included, reads like a dorky 12 year old trying to win over the head cheerleader by throwing out compliments. I just don't see it as nice and poetic, but more desperate and immature. He has written a ton of better odes to Adi where he talks about what he loves about her and her strengths instead of just throwing out what are meant as compliments.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 I wonder why he thought it was a good idea to re-write She's A Rebel. It's one of the weaker tracks on AI so...

Remember, remember the beautiful image of the cedar vagina in the lyrics video. 1 hour ago, Scattered Wreck said: the entire song in general, that line included, reads like a dorky 12 year old trying to win over the head cheerleader by throwing out compliments. Yes. Plus a dorky twelve year old would love that vagina reference in the lyrics video.

Again just because something is light hearted or tongue in cheek or risque in any way it doesn't mean it's bad. I don't know when this idea that any remotely silly or fun sounding word or phrase in a Green Day song automatically means it has terrible lyrics started but I don't subscribe to it. It's a song reminiscing about young love and silly, fun times so why wouldn't it include some light hearted phrases or imagery in the video?
Christian's Inferno! Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 People taking Youngblood way too seriously

solongfromthestars Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 I'll give it to Youngblood that it's fun live (I appreciated Billie's super enthusiastic "fuck you I'm from England") and it doesn't seem as bad now I've seen it live. I still think some of its lyrics are up there with his worst though, the cedar line being one of them Someone can say a song is lacking lyrically without taking it too seriously. 7 hours ago, Hero_Of_The_Hour said: Ah Youngblood. I thought when I heard it was written on the 21CB tour that it was probably originally about the same person as some of the trilogy stuff, hence the "young" theme. Maybe that is why some of it seems nonsensical if it was rewritten to be about a different person. Just a thought - I'm not trying to analyse anything or suggest anything about his personal life, bla bla bla.

solongfromthestars Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 Let's be real, whatever I say about Youngblood, I'd still pay to have them shout "youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood youngblood punch sydney youngblood" in my face for three hours
