Billie Joe voice change

Is it just me or has anyone noticed that Billie Joe's voice has changed over the years? Listen to a Revolution Radio song right after Kerplunk/Dookie song and the vocals sound pretty different!

I have wondered this myself. Even his speaking voice is totally different. I think he was putting on more of a fake voice when he was younger to be manly and punk. Where as now, he is either using his natural voice or using another fake (but flamboyant) voice to express his interest is femininity these days.

Whatever the case, I think he is more comfortable with himself now than he was in the 90's, and I think he is finding the middle ground between his 90's and 2000's incarnations.

People's vioces are changing through the years, that's completely normal, isn't it? My voice has changed at least.

He has gotten better vocally. Your voice changes over time. I think his voice is 1000X better now than it was, not that it was bad before, but now he's got that voice that will melt your heart.

Another example of voice change (more drastic change) is James Hetfield. Night and day difference with his current voice compared to the old voice.

I haven't actually been to a concert but I watch them I you tube sometimes, anyway I have noticed that lately his voice is kind of going. I know that he has been on tour but that's a long tour.

His singing has improved technically.

As to the speaking voice, voice change is natural.

James Hetfield blew his vocal cords out and began taking actual singing lessons circa 1993, so that's why his voice is different.

Yeah, speaking of voice changes, Tom DeLonge is another example of a night-and-day change. He definitely did not take care of his voice or even really control it, so now it's just a garbled and exaggerated version of what it once was.

Yes, he's a human. ;)

while he's become a better vocalist....

his voice has literally gotten higher pitched (less deep) as he's grown older and it drives me mad

listen to dookie, then AI, then BIAB, then AAF, then one of their concerts from the past two years, and you'll hear it too. even in the "fake showman voice" he does when hes performing

Nah I think you are missing the point. His voice got higher. Blowing his voice out probably has a big impact. I guess my point was people voices change. Vocal lessons might do it. I think aging is really what does it though, along with continued singing. Look at Hayley Williams of Paramore too. Her voice also lost some low end.

Yeah, I know, I was saying that blowing his voice out is what made it more drastic than Billie.

Yes that's true. His vocals in the recent albums sound way better than those in the early albums. I think RevRad features some of his best vocals yet!

I think every BJ's kind of voice has its own particularity: the younger one (1988/1994) that becomes heavier in Insomniac (1995), passing by the middle years (1996/2003) and becoming always more mature since 2004. Personally, I really like the 2000s one. A lot of songs of 1039/Kerplunk would sound better with that.

It's completely natural that voices change... and in Billie's case, I really think it was a change for the better! I personally prefer his "newer" voice (from AI on). I loved his voice during 21CB tour, but after re-listening to Awesome as Fuck, I must say that I love his RevRad-voice right now even more. It might be less polished, but SO full of emotion, especially during songs like Still Breathing. I'm praying that we'll get some live material of this tour.

It's a new voice, new teeth...I see a pattern here. Instead of aging, billie gets replacement parts.

The only part he won't change is its arm... Because his Armstrong.

Sorry it was bad as hell.

He has already replaced them with stronger ones! :P

I have recently elaborated on the subject in the fangirl thread. :ninja:

Welcome to GDC! I've moved this thread from Welcome to Paradise (which is meant for personal introduction threads) to Green Day Chat (the section of the forum where you can make threads like this to discuss all things Green Day). Feel free to head back to Welcome to Paradise and tell us a little bit about yourself sometime. :)

Forget Billie's voice. Check out Mike's hairline! It seems to have become stronger with age and grown back from it's late 90's recession.

It's because he's learnt to sing better. Not necessarily sound-wise because that's entirely subjective, but he's putting less strain on his voice by opening his larynx which gives him more power and makes him sound less nasal. Technically he's improved massively.

For me the AI was the best album in terms of vocal performance.

I love BJ's voice in all albums - but in 90s it's too rusty and nasal, and from 21st century on it's sometimes too high-pitched and "sweet" (for example, 21 Guns or Outlaws in verses - sometimes I can't listen to this Billie).

American Idiot is just perfect - he matured, learned to sing better but his voice didn't become too high-pitched. It's all beautiful, and BOBD or Wake Me Up do not have this poppish flavour.

He did take vocal lessons for the broadway shows in sure that played a part
