I wonder if Billie had that thought because ten years later he’s seeing the play through a different lens. He wrote Whatsername to be a strong character on the album. Stronger than JOS, she was a personal inspiration for the rebellious spirit he longed to be if he could stop taking drugs and get off his ass long enough. He had a crush on her but it went way deeper than that.  In the musical however, she and the other two women added for the male leads were all reduced to weak tropes: pregnant ball and chain, nurturing nurse and sexy fantasy love interest. That saddened me but by flipping the genders you could fix that by giving the female leads a chance to show their strengths and grow.

It's a great idea. The BAZP production had a female Tunny and St. Jimmy and they were brilliant. I liked that take on Tunny a lot more than the original.

Will and Heather could also be trans. Would be awesome (and logical) to see trans people represented in a show about America.

I did enjoy the musical, but all the added characters really didn't benefit the story. I understand they needed to do it because it needs a more streamlined plot, but I loved that on the AI album the characters were very vaguely written so that anyone could relate to them. Although it has somewhat of a plot, the album was sort of a commentary on all Americans and the various personality traits/world views we have.
