And the bottom number tells you what gets one beat. 4 on the bottom is a quarter=1; 8 on the bottom is and eighth note (the one with the flag) =1. So Brutal Love in 6/8 is written with 6 eighth notes; which are divided into 2 sets of 3. This division, by the way, makes 6/8 an example of compound meter. You can count it in 6, or in a slow 2, form the 2 sets of 3. There is also Common Time, which is a letter "C" =4/4, and Cut time, which is 2/2....

Got me geeking out on meter!

This is probably a dumb question but what's slow 2?

No not dumb! Counting like this:  1, 2, 1, 2 but to a slow beat, as opposed to counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 to a faster beat.

The two ways of counting compound meter 6/8  line up like this, if this is one measure:

In 6:      1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

In 2:      1          2

OK I need to chime in with a question here too – is there a difference between 3/4 and 6/8?

Yes! 3/4 sounds like a walzer "hum da da" and a 6/8 has a different feel to it.

They are different.  As Mary said, 3/4 is like a waltz, if you are counting, it is 1-2-3/ 1-2-3/ 1-2-3.  If you are counting 6/8, it would be more 1-2-3, 1-2-3/ 1-2-3, 1-2-3/

yes, the difference is that in 3/4 the accents are on the first beat, in 6/8 they are as well, so it's as if you played 3/4 with only every other bar accented.

Would that be the same as a half note?

Yes this was already answered but they do have a different feel, 6/8  is more of a lilting feel, too.  There is 12/8 too...think "Oh Darling" by the Beatles

Yes, the half note get 2 beats when there is a 4 on the bottom of the time signature.  In my example above, the 1,2,3,4,5,6 are eighth notes in two sets of three, and the 1,  2 counting would be shown as two  dotted quarter notes.

Thank you. I've been a "musician" for 20 years and my knowledge of music theory doesn't go beyond counting to four.

It seems like Green Day gets better as they get older.

Green Day, 'Dookie' (1994)

Green Day's major-label debut exploded across teenage America in the wake of Kurt Cobain's death like sweet, manic relief. Dookie was an irresistible paradox: 14 songs about despair detonated with Who-ish zeal and radio-tight pop craft. Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong called it his "journal about what it's like to live as a street kid" — desperate for connection and frustrated to an atomic degree.

Well that's a weird list. Joy Division but no SLF?

Hitsville High: The Unlikely Music Factory at Pinole Valley High School

Unbeknownst to most people — even the teachers, school staff, and members of the school board — Pinole Valley High has a history of churning out professional musicians. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt of Green Day attended the school,

In the '90s, it was the success of Green Day that inspired future generations of students. As freshmen in 1986, singer Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt formed the first iteration of Green Day (then called Sweet Children). The following year, the band signed to Lookout! Records, and in 1988 they released their first EP, 1,000 Hours. During Armstrong's senior year in 1990, on the day he turned 18, he decided to drop out of high school to pursue music full-time.

Two months later, the band released their debut album, 39/Smooth. By Foreign Foods Day in 1990 — an annual school event now called the Multicultural Food Fair — Green Day, who performed 15 songs in the quad as part of the festivities, was famous enough to entice multiple students to film the event. (Videos of that day can still be found on YouTube.)

"I think all Pinole Valley High School bands hoped in some ways to match Green Day's early success," says Corbett Redford III, a Pinole Valley alum who graduated in 1993 along with the Filipino pop singer Jocelyn Enriquez.

It was Green Day's success that led Redford and Dan Abbott, then an underclassman, to form the folk-rock duo Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits in 1995.

"I grew up in the shadow of Green Day," Abbott says. "And whether you were into their music or not, it was inspiring."

Green Day is #11 on Loudwires Greatest Punk Bands of all time.  They should have been higher, but at least they are there

@Todd Rancid is #14

Ha! The top 3 were too easy to predict :P Great list! Didn't expect the Dead Kennedys to rank so high above the others, and it was nice that they included Green Day on the list. They really didn't have to!

TBH, I'd put them at 13. If we were talking the most INFLUENTIAL, however...

Max Becker from SWMRS said this on twitter:

"Just wanna say to the kid who we yelled at afterwards: bummed that all happened. Next time please don't yell "green day" at me after a show"
"Right now we're all pretty fucking made at you, but I know that you may have not meant any trouble. Thanks for supporting us"
"But don't EVER fuckin do that again. Or you will be blacklisted. And don't ever say I'm being disrespectful to you ever again"
"You know what? Fuck it. I was being too nice earlier. Fuck that guy. If anyone sees him, kick his ass."

Can you elaborate on what exactly happened?

I know SWMRS like to distance themselves from Green Day and don't want to ride on their success, and want to forge their own path. But this seems like a pretty blown up reaction to someone just shouting "Green Day". And Max always seems like such a chilled out guy, so I'm wondering if there is more to what actually happened.

Also, as much as I am a huge SWMRS fan, I kinda feel like they do owe some of their success to Green Day. A lot of people (me included) only heard of them because of Joey being in the band. So from the start they had an elevated platform to work from. Not to mention the fact that Billie Joe produced Lost At 17.

I'm also a massive SWMRS fan but I only know as much as you on the entire situation. I've heard from fans that those boys are the nicest people you'll meet so I'm sure there's much more to just someone saying "green day" for them to all yell at the person.
