End Of The World Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Hi guys. In this thread you can define each GD album with an adjective. It could be something related to the meaning, the sound or the atmosphere of the record, but also what it means to you. Please give reasons, so we can discuss. I'm starting here: 39/Smooth: IMMATURE - It's their first album. It has very "young" sound and lyrics. Kerplunk: RAW - Not as immature as 39/Smooth. Sound is (too much) raw, songs are faster as well. Dookie: CATCHY - Pop-Punk mixing, wonderful lyrics. The atmosphere here is so good. Insomniac: DARK - My favorite mixing. Sound is raw but not as much as Kerplunk. The atmosphere is strange and darker than Dookie. Nimrod: BRILLIANT - Just brilliant. Fun, clean sound. The personification of Trè Cool. Warning: BRAVE - Different from any GD work of the 90s, it has the power to kick you in the ass. American Idiot: EPIC - Fantastic atmosphere. When you listen to the record YOU are the king. 21st Century Breakdown: ENVIOUS - Similar to American Idiot, but at the same time really different. Anyway, it can be as epic as it. And it feels so bad. Uno - POWERFUL - It has got a lot of power to display. Too bad power is not the only one thing that makes an album great. Dos - CRAZY - Just listen to Wow That's So Loud or see the music video of Stray Heart. Trè - SAD - Strange atmosphere. It looks like it's all over. Songs like Brutal Love, The Forgotten and Amanda explain this adjective. Revolution Radio - PERSONAL - Every album has a soul. But this in particular let us see it. Hope you have fun.
Christian's Inferno! Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 39/Smooth - Inexperienced - This album shows us how inexperienced GD were at first. It's amazing to see how much they've grown since this album Kerplunk - Raw - This album shows us the raw sound of GD Dookie - Angsty - This album is all about teenage angst Insomniac - Punk - Their punkest album to date Nimrod - Experimental - This album sees GD beginning to experiment with their music and going outisde their regular sounds Warning - Mature - This album sees GD beginning to mature as a band. This maturity eventually resulted in AI, their most successful album AI - Narrative - As AI tells a story, I feel "Narrative" would be the most appropriate adjective for it 21CB - Epic - Although AI is Epic, I think 21CB is their most "epic" album to date Uno - Poppy - The power pop sound can be clearly heard throughout this album Dos - Dark - I think 'Dos' is arguable darker than Insomniac lyrically and musically Tré - Reflective - BJ has described this album as the reflective "hangover" of the trilogy RevRad - Political - Although politics is present in AI and 21CB, I think RR has the most politics in it with songs like BB, TT, RR and SG
Dakke Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 39/Smooth - Youthful - an album replete with songs a 16 year old would write, with some mature songs (i. e. Road to Acceptance) that fit in perfectly in the punk nursery that is the Bay Area. Kerplunk - Promise - Tracks like Christie Road, No One Knows and Welcome to Paradise prove that Green Day is capable of creating great punk songs which distinguish them from their Ramones-influenced peers. Dookie - Punk-reviving - One of the 90s hallmark record, the breakthrough of Green Day and one that formed the foundation of an ineffable legacy. Insomniac - Angry - Angry guitars and fast-paced songs make for a pure punk record that proves to be a worthy follow-up to the career-defining Dookie. Nimrod - Diverse - A departure of the past with ballads (Good Riddance), hardcore punk (Take Back) and naughty punk (the Grouch) songs that display the band's musicianship all its variety. Warning - Underrated - A radical pivot away from previous records which paved the way for American Idiot with its story songs (Misery), societally aware tracks (Warning, Minority, Macy's Day Parade) and general lyrical craftsmanship pervaded with folk influences. American Idiot - Monumental - The comeback record of the century which revived the somewhat dusty subgenre of the rock opera with real characters that exulted our ears with unsurpassed multi-part epics (Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming) and political anthems (American Idiot and Holiday). 21st Century Breakdown - Epic - The most epic record they've ever written, their lyrical apex which channels Clash-infused political indignation (21st Century Breakdown, East Jesus Nowhere) on an hour long State of the Union which threatens to derail its meandering storyline under the gravity of its own grandeur. Uno! - Exuberant - This record embodies the post-21CB 'carpe diem' mentality of the band. Lots of expletives and BM-excellent tits (Troublemaker) prove that Billie's elation knows to bounds (to the detriment of the record). Dos! - Dark - The sole Trilogy record to have some sort of thematic coherence, songs like Nightlife and Lady Cobra metaphorically display Billie's desperate fight against the siren call of pills and alcohol which are slowly breaking him down (Lazy Bones). Tré! - Quasi-epic - Attempting to return to the great sound of the rock opera, Tré! is thematically and lyrically uneven and disjointed, though it contains some gems (Brutal Love, X-Kid) that save the record from the overall randomness and lyrical morass that bogged Uno! and Dos! Revolution Radio - Decisive - Revolution Radio is a turning point, a return for a band which has braved many quandaries and faced death more than once. Billie writes some of his most personal songs, from waking up in rehab (Somewhere Now), over appreciation (Still Breathing) to the triumphant return as a reborn band (Forever Now), which has observed and imbued the horror of the world (BB, SG, TT) and can look back to the past without getting stuck in the fallacy of reviving nostalgia (Outlaws and Too Dumb To Die).
St. Jonny Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 39/Smooth - Ambitious - First album, good punk sound, very raw and punchy! They were young and youthful so that's the best way to describe the first album. Kerplunk - Frustrated - Seems to be a good word to describe a lot of the feelings in this album. All of the tracks have a relatable frustration type feel to them. Dookie - Explosive - Love this album so much because of the heaviness, as with Insomniac, but it just gives this destructive destroy everything feel with every song. Burnout makes me feel like I don't have to care about shit and says I can feel comfortable with that. Having A Blast, Chump and Longview are quite explosive, I always see shit blowing up when I hear these tunes. F.O.D. also has that let's nuke the bridge we torched two thousand times before line that always brings me back to the explosive atmosphere and look at the cover. Could go on forever bout this one! Insomniac - Destructive - Most of these songs are just pure laying waste to bullshit and heavy guitar riffs are the best for that. You get that destructive feel on every song and the drums oh god, so heavy, Tre's off the page on this one! Destructive album to say the least. Some of Billie's greatest angry lyrics. Nimrod - Heavy - Just going to go with heavy as far as the sound. Perfect well polished heavy guitar and bass sound, drums are explosive! Lyrically it's quite heavy too and has that classic fuck you feel in most of the song's, pretty heavy album indeed! Warning - Independent - The tracks on this album all seem to be coming from a guy who only has himself in the end. Hold On, Minority, Fashion Victim, Castaway and Waiting all give you that feeling of independence. Music is great for that and this album is the best example of that along with AI. American Idiot - Dramatic - The best story the band has made and put into music. Touches the souls of many in a way no other band could. Changed the path and entity of this band completely, a very epic piece of music history indeed! I find it is musically as dramatic as the lyrics given the stories being told and the feelings felt from the listener from their own experiences. Certainly monumental and career changing, put them back at the top once again! 21st Century Breakdown - Diverse - I find this to be the most diverse musically and lyrically of all the albums. Quite experimental too, like Nimrod and Warning. Has it's depressing moments too. Uno - Rejuvenating - Back to the basics type attitude from the new rock opera direction, good garage style rock songs and another new turn in experimentation with songs like Kill The DJ and Oh Love. Love it. Dos - Mischievous - A lot of the darker tones and lyrics give it a mischievous feel, and the actions of the characters in the lyrics are really secretive and spiteful. More experimenting in this one too, Nightlife again gives me that same feeling, like your doing something you shouldn't be. Tre - Estranged - The whole album is like everything is about to fall apart and what can you do, estranged is the best word I can find to sum it up. Can't say depressing because these songs have gotten me through times like that. Revolution Radio - Defining - This really does define these guys as Rock gods once again! Mid-forties and still rocking hard, strong and free. Still feels to me like they are starting a new Revolution! This was hard, didn't want to use the same words already mentioned. Would have said more bout the albums, but I got other stuff to do too
I don't care Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 Amazing and creative thread, as usual @End Of The World.

I love this summary.
Christian's Inferno! Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 I've already given a description but I think a better adjective for 21CB would be Apocalyptic. Themes of apocalypse can be seen throughout the album, even just within the song names (Murder City, 21st Century Breakdown, Last Night on Earth). The album cover also looks kind of apocalyptic to me too

platypus136 Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 Wow I did not even think about this Great ideas
DeJennsitized Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 Gonna do mine before I read the others in case it influences me too much 39/Smooth: Inexperienced. It's not the Green Day I love yet, but there are some promising moments, and the potential is there. Kerplunk: Promising. The Green Day formula is laid down in this album with the addition of Tre on drums, and they seem more confident in what they're doing. Dookie: Relatable. I think this is the most relatable album they've done and that's why it's the best selling. Teenage angst and boredom and relationships. Also all of the songs are catchy as fuck. Insomniac: Angry. The shortest album with the fastest songs. The distorted guitar is everything! Nimrod: Experimental. Lots of songs and different instruments tried out, such as strings, trumpets, harmonica, and acoustic guitar. Even a surf-rock instrumental. Warning: Mature. Warning had a different sound than previous albums, the guitar is less distorted and it's lyrically my favourite album. Paved the way for a new era of GD. American Idiot: Focused. Everything about this album was polished and determined to make an impact, from the guys' outfits to the artwork to the songs themselves. 21CB: Epic. This album feels like it goes on forever (in a good way IMO! ) with so many songs and connecting themes. Uno: Cliche. I don't hate this album by any means but nothing particularly stands out about it. It sounds like Green Day, that's really it. Dos: Carefree. We know it wasn't truly carefree but the songs themselves sound like they don't give a fuck. Nightlife, Fuck Time, Makeout Party. Tre: Reflective. Three ballads and quite a few others with themes of loss. Quite a sad album really. Revolution Radio: Personal. No more characters or facades; it's Green Day as they are now, which is awesome.
Private Ale. Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 39/smooth- happy . Simply because it makes me happy.Billie was a young boy that had big plans.. Kerplunk-Sincere . lyrics are pretty heartfully written. Dookie-Honest . All about being uncool, nasty and being honest about it. Insomniac -best friend . Nimrod-complex Warning-Calmed down. shenanigans: disappearing boy American Idiot : provoking 21st cb:maturing uno:weird dos:weirder tre:sad revrad: personal
RedundantIdiot Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 39/Smooth: Pubescent. Teenage GD Kerplunk: Love-struck. Songs about Adrienne Dookie: Boredom. Songs about boredom Insomniac: Edgy. Raw punk sound Nimrod: Maturing. GDs growing up Warning: Catchy. Full of catchy songs American Idiot: Majestic. My favourite album 21st Century: Epic. A great rock opera Trilogy: Gamble. Some great songs some not so good Rev Rad: Touching. Some deep lyrics such as Still Breathing
onionbubs Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 39 smooth: Promising Kerplunk: Raw Dookie: Obnoxious (in the best way possible) Insomniac: Anger Nimrod: Diverse Warning: Mature American Idiot: epic 21CB: Over-the-top Uno: Lifeless Dos: Irredemable crap Tre: Salvagable Revolution Radio: Relieving

St. Jonny Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 I would have gone with Epic for a few of these, I am finding the word always having to be used these days to describe things just really are not epic so I have been trying not to use it and didn't. If I were to, I feel it would have to go to American Idiot with how epic it was in comparison to anything they had done before. 10 minute songs in the style of rock opera from a band who typically wrote 2-4 minute heavy punk songs, and added more keyboard and storytelling to the music. Was a pretty epic change! Varied is also a good word as RougeRogue had, could describe a lot of their albums.
RougeRogue Posted December 13, 2016 Posted December 13, 2016 Another word for Dos is "Dirty" That was my initial word for it upon first listen. It made me feel dirty. And not like...in a good way.

Songs like Makeout Party, Baby Eyes, Nightlife, Lady Cobra, Wow That's So Loud suggest me that it's F-woo Time... Not even just that it was like...this seems silly now but when I first listened to it, I just got this overwhelming feeling of substance abuse and cheating. And it made me stop and go "Is Billie trying to tell me that he cheated on Adrienne via song?" And that was...absolutely a factor in making me disconnect with them for a while. I still think the themes are there. And I think Billie felt that he, figuratively, cheated on her rather than literally (at least I fucking hope so) like...cheating via substances rather than an actual person. Dos, to me, describes a lot of Billie's addiction. And just like the icky feeling we get with iHeart, that's the icky feeling I get with Dos. That's what it makes me think of. Which is goddamn tragic because Mike's beautiful face and basslines did not deserve that fate
