bouncingoffthewallbja Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 So, I was so pumped for Green Day's date for Dublin next year, only to find out the fact that the VENUE have restricted the show to over 18s only. I am rightly pissed off!!! In fairness, it's always over 18s at RHK, not specifically for Green Day. I'm literally taking no heed to the restriction - I feel that even though it's 18+, the discretion should maybe be left to guardians as to whether or not a minor should attend. I'm 99% sure the restrictions are an attempt to reduce noise for local residents, reduce litter and reduce anti-social behaviour in minors, due to the fact that the show is being held at a historical venue. (Which I do agree with, although I feel as if I am responsible and I would be attending with an adult anyway!) Are there any other shows for the RevRad tour (or previous GD shows) which have had age restrictions placed on them? I feel that it's a real shame, because GD do have a really good teenage fan base, and there's so many videos of kids getting to sing/play guitar/stage dive etc!! Also, you can tell that Billie Joe, Tré and Mike really enjoy interacting with younger members of the audience! I'd love to see what everyone else thinks about these restrictions! Edit: Tour promoters MCD have updated their site to include this - "Please Note: Over 18s ID Required (under 18's must be accompanied by an adult over 25 years)" I'm so ecstatic!!!
norcalgreendayfan Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Wow first time I ever heard of a age restriction at a Green Day show but I guess it is more to do with the venue itself than it does with Green Day.

I know! I just can't get my head around it! At least it's like that for every show played there, not just GD!!
Second favourite son Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 Normally for Green Day (and the vast majority of similar bands) it's under 14s need an adult 18+ and U14/U16 have to get seated tickets. Restricting to 18+ only is dumb, but often it's due to licensing restrictions with the venue itself, whether that be alcohol-wise or just planning permission. Makes you wonder why they chose that venue though.
Trotsky Posted November 30, 2016 Posted November 30, 2016 It has to do with alcohol laws, if a venue that normally serves alcohol wants to let in people under 18 then they have additional regulations and can be liable if minors are drinking on the premises so most don't bother. But if you sneak in that would be punk as fuck, so you should do that.

There's that too I know here most venues that do all ages shows either have a wristband or stamp the hand of those over 21 so that they can know who can buy alcohol and should be drinking on the premises

Makes you wonder why they chose that venue though. It could possibly be due to alcohol related procedures, but there was an appendix about the venue someone posted on the RHK show thread which mentions other factors such as noise levels/no onsite parking etc. Last year, a well known Irish band named Kodaline played the same venue, and I know for a fact that a lot of their fan base would be teenagers, but that show was also restricted to 18+. It's a real shame, because I'm sure there's lots of younger fans who are disappointed at missing probably the only opportunity they had at seeing Green Day in Ireland for the foreseeable future!! 10 minutes ago, Trotsky said: But if you sneak in that would be punk as fuck, so you should do that. I will be strongly considering that possibility!

Making a Kodaline gig 18+ is like making a Rolling Stones gig under 18 only - you'll get some fans, but you're really missing the core fanbase. It's not such a huge problem for Green Day since there is a large over-18 fanbase, but it still sucks. It's like they've totally given up on trying to engage with new/younger fans. 16 minutes ago, bouncingoffthewallbja said: I will be strongly considering that possibility! Do it! Alan86 Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Just ask some one that looks above 18 in the queue to pretend to be your guardian. Then once your in you can head wherever you like.
Zelda Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Right as you're walking in, start talking about taxes and bills and other adult things, they'll either let you pass because they think you're an adult or avoid you because adult things are scary.
GDInsaniac Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 Ive been to many concerts where the venue had an age restriction, but i have never seen a staff member ask for peoples ID. Maybe its different in ireland and they are more strict, but Ive never seen someone denied at the door because of their age.
Wretched & Divine Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I admittedly don't pay a lick of attention to age restrictions when buying tickets since I haven't had to worry about that myself for quite some time. But you should make sure you won't be thirsty, as I was almost turned away from buying water at a show last year because I hadn't bothered getting my 18+ wrist band since I don't drink at shows. And they were ready to refuse me water, even with my ID, but thankfully there was a nice guy in line who bought it for me. So I'd be wary of that, assuming you make it past security to get inside.

Refuse selling you water because you didn't get the 18+ wristband now that's just silly, I understand alcohol but this is water we are talking about.

Yep, I agree it's stupid. The reason I skip getting the wrist band is that it takes longer to get inside and I don't even need it. Or so I thought. Now I always make sure I get in that line just to be safe because you sure as hell don't want to be risking dehydration at a concert.

I'm going to Milan (I have a sit) and I'm 15. Now I'm almost sure I can enter. If not, I'll do ANYTHING to get in. From hiding into the crowd to a 007 mission. I just have to be there.

Yeah it's the venue, they've had age restrictions when they (or FBHT) have played clubs before and it's not at their request, it's down to the venue's rules. Certainly seems dumb when it's a large venue/not a club though.
Beathe. Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 It depends on the venues basically. There's a couple of venues here that have 18+ for all events, they always check ID.

I could understand the point if I was 10, but I think it should be 14-17 with an adult at least!

I could understand the point if I was 10, but I think it should be 14-17 with an adult at least! Every scam and deception in history stems from confidence. Some of the most successful acts of theft in history are people going "hey, I'm with the foundation, I just need to take this million dollar art piece for 2 hours from inspection and archival filing matters, you're surely aware I was coming?" and then they just walk out in front of everyone. Same principle applies, if you get the ticket and look like you're supposed to be there, it shouldn't be an issue. I've been to shows where they did ID everyone but that's not usually the case, and these were also shows in the USA which I think is a lot more uptight about IDing people than Ireland. Which doesn't seem too uptight seeing that my friend passing through on the way to Germany said he was given his passport stamp without a single question and without his actual ID even being looked at. Also, this thread so reminds me of this great fucking song, "All Ages Show Tonight" by Against All Authority, which sadly I cannot find a valid youtube link for as the copyright police have stripped the audio. Fuckers.
BilIie Joe Armstrong Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I agree with John, just act confident and you should be fine. A 16 year old friend of mine once tried buying alcohol and got ID'd. The guy looked at his ID, gave it back and sold him the bottle. So yeah, the fact that you might get ID'd isn't the end of everything.

Like I'd buy alcohol and cigarettes never being ID'd for weeks at a time and then I'd get ID'd for a scratch ticket. One time though I was harassed by loss prevention in Office Depot for no fucking reason, so I guess I must have some sketch factor.

I either must look younger or suspicious. It's not an issue since I'm 18 though. Huh, that sounds nasty.
Kaddi. Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 I don't think I've ever been ID'd for a concert? I'm also pretty sure that there are no age restrictions other than minors under 14 having to be with their parents or another supervisor. Pretty sure all venues sell alcohol, but you'd just get ID'd when buying alcoholic drinks then which also makes a lot more sense to me than forbidding minors to go in completely.
Backyard Skulls Posted December 1, 2016 Posted December 1, 2016 The first time I saw Green Day was with my cousin, we were both only 15. Didn't have any adult to accompany us, security guards couldn't give two shits! I don't think I've ever been ID'd for concerts. I went to see an 80s band WASP, with my auntie when I was 16, again security weren't even bothered. Both gigs were in Glasgow btw. I find they're more strict on searching your bags for bottles or whatever Last gig I went to I had literally just bought a bottle of water and then had to throw it away, so irritating. Be careful though buying water/juice when you're there! I once got ID'd for buying a can of irn bru after playing a gig in a club. My friend's ID wasn't accepted so she had to show her debit card as well which was a little odd..
