What are your favorites and why?

Armatash Shanks/Oh Love for me!

Armatage because it kicks ass and Whatsername because it's amazing.

Your options are a bit unusual. I wanted to pick Brutal Love as a closer but it was with the opener options, so I settled for The Forgotten. It never got a chance to be played live so I thought it would be interesting.

And of course Armatage Shanks as an opener! How cool would that be!

I would have done Forever Now if it was the closer instead of ordinary world

Somewhere Now / 21st Cenruty Breakdown/ Brutal Love as an opener - I love so much when Green Day starts an album with a mid-pace thoughtful song. And Brutal Love is simply brilliant.

Prosthetic Head / Macy's Day Parade / Whatsername as a closer.

I've added to your OP for people to say why they picked what they picked, to avoid this turning into a "list thread" where the answers are just song titles with no discussion. Just FYI it's always a good idea to do that with this type of thread :)

Brutal Love is the opener for Tre, but you'd be forgiven for thinking it's a closer - it's perfect for a closer but for some odd reason they made it the first song! :tired:

I picked Burnout for my favourite opener based on the fact I got chills when I played Dookie for the first time over 10 years ago - I can still picture the exact moment i heard that drum intro :D

For closer, I picked See The Light. I just really like how it ends the same way 21st Century Breakdown starts. If Forever Now had been RevRad's closer I'd have probably picked that.

My choice was:

Opener - Nice Guys Finish Last

Closer - Walking Contradiction

Maybe I'm in the minority of people who chose them, but I love GD albums of the 90s.

Yeah exactly! I don't get it and refuse to admit it lol

I think 21cb is the most awesome dramatic opening for an album. I woulda picked homecoming for the best closer, but well, not an option. Seriously though, homecoming is literally like the most perfect musical piece of resolution.

armatage shanks and macy's day parade.

I picked at the Library because just in those first riffs it makes me think about the beginning of Green Day and I get all emotional about how far they have come and it just all comes to me with that riff. Plus it really gets me psyched for the rest of the compilation album. As far as closer I think that Whatsername is without a doubt a wonderful closer to a very emotionally driven record and it just has all the perfect elements, reflection, soft-hard-soft pattern. It's wonderful.

Tre has the best opening and closing track. Both songs have one of the best vocal performances by Billie Joe.

21st Century Breakdown and Whatsername, and tbh I don't think it's even close. They're both among the very best songs they've ever done, and they're the perfect opener/closer respectively in their own right.

I'm glad most people picked whatsername for the closer. That song is the perfect ending to the story that is American Idiot.

Armatage Shanks and Whatshername.....wow, that's the popular opinion right now!

Opener for me was a close one with Nice Guys and Brutal Love.

Whatshername just blows all the other closers out of the water.   I guess Ordinary World would be the runner up but....the last one to lose the race.   Almost only really counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

Closer was easy, Whatsername is one of the most perfect songs ever.  I went with Brutal Love as an opener because I also think it is one of their best songs ever, so beautiful and powerful.

I picked 21CB for opener, one of GD's best songs ever, and Oh Love for closer. It was between Oh Love, Whatsername and See the Light for me

It's sad to see Nice Guys Finish Last below the list. It used to be my all time favorite album opener until American Idiot was released.

FOD is also a wonderful album closer but Whatsername wins the battle because of the emotions it carries.

Yes, closer was easy... Whatsername is just a thing of perfection. And when the song ends and there's just silence - wow. I should listen to AI from start to finish once again, haven't done that in a while!

Opener was harder. I'm torn between 21CB, Brutal Love and Somewhere Now. 21CB was the perfect live opener of the best GD live show I've ever seen, so it would be easy to pick that one. And Brutal Love is one of my all-time favourites and I adore this song. But I picked Somewhere Now because I love how this song kind of holds the whole record together, plus the lyrics are great and very suitable for my life right now. I really, really hope it will be the opener for the arena shows!

21st Century Breakdown and Whatsername.

American Idiot (this song just hits)

and The words I might have ate

Without a doubt, I chose Whatsername as the best closer. It perfectly finishes the story of American Idiot and I think that most people can relate to it in one way or another!!

American Idiot and Whatsername.  AI is my fav album, so.

As an old school guy it was between Armatage and Burnout but I went with Burnout, can't beat that subtle heavy ass intro. Really hard to choose! Closer went with Walking Contradiction, video is killer and nobody was voting for it.
