Revoltion Radio VS California

I'm not sure if someone has done this or not but I was just wondering what the overall opinion would be if we compared Green Day Revolution Radio and Blink 182 California. I personally, after listening to both albums several times, would pick Revolution Radio to be the stronger and better album. It might just be the fact that I really was never and still am not a big Blink fan, but lyrically revrad is a lot better and isn't quite as pop oriented. I feel that songs like Los Angeles and California were Californias biggest downfall.

I would pick Blink if Tom was still in the band, but with Matt Skiba in the band the band sounds like a Blink cover band. Revolution Radio was also a huge dissapointment, so I will go with 13 Voices by Sum 41 at number one, it's instrumentaly and lyrically way more solid. It also comes with a better meaning and works great as a whole album. Really that album is way better than what GD and Blink did. First Ditch Effort by NOFX is my close second.

The most diverse but also tight album is Revolution Radio, whereas California kinda has that first step into the water feel to it because of Matt's first appearance (he's definitely a fantastic replacement for Tom's piss poor vocals, despite my love for classic Blink). Sum 41's album is really good too, just the intro to it is a big letdown, sounds really mainstream teenager metal which is garbage. Dump the first two tracks and you got a better album than California. But I think California flows better despite the first Matt development. RevRad is just magnificent though, just rip it up and tear it down, #1.

Revolution Radio, because it was more lyrically diverse than California, though California is a fun album to listen to.

It really is, Mark's vocal range is really good on a large portion of that album

This is a Green Day forum so people will generally say RevRad. I don't know why Green Day and Blink are compared with each other so often they are nothing alike.

It's largely a generational thing, and the bands did tour together (pop disaster?)

Is this seriously something people have doubts about? Revolution Radio all the way.

They both released most pop albums in their history.

Yeah they did tour with each other about 15 years ago, both bands have toured with many other bands since. Both bands have had a very different path in those 15 years too which separates them even further.

Yeah, when people think of punk bands, Green day and Blink are usually side by side. It wouldn't be unusual if someone chose Califorinia over Revrad here.

On a sidenote, I'd flip out if they did another Pop Disaster tour haha. It's cool that all three of the major bands that were on that tour released albums this year. all we need now is some Kut U Up and glitter guns haha

Yea I really don't see it. Blink has had issues for years with a good recording environment and work ethic large in part because of Tom's insolence. Sum 41 has had members come and go from the band, so I don't see how either could realistically compare to how Green Day as a whole scrutinizes their writing. Plus GD does a large part to make sure their songs sound great acoustically, not just distorted noise (think American Idiot era, all the songs had an acoustic guitar backtrack and probably a lot of 21st CB/Triple album songs also).

In short, Rock and Roll HOFs versus....yea. (still a fan of both Sum 41 and Blink 182 mind you)

Yeah the really don't have a lot in common. it's just the idea of comparing two of the most anticipated albums, that actually have instruments and required great musicianship to piece together, against each other.

While I don't seem to hate California and RevRad as much as you do, I have to say you're right:  13 Voices is probably my favorite album of the year.  I'm blown away by pretty much every song, especially the title track.

I never understood it either. In my opinion, Green Day are in a league of their own.

California is the best Blink album since TOYPAJ but honestly they'll never touch Green Day.

RevRad is easily AOTY.

It honestly took me a few listens to come around to RevRad. I didn't like it that much at first. After a few listens it's probably my 3rd favorite Green Day album.

This is like trying to compare Green Day to Nirvana. Same period general period and shares a lot of fans, but their music isn't even alike.

California is a pretty pop punk album. 13 Voices is probably the best Sum 41 record. First Ditch Effort is a great punk rock work, on the NOFX top 3 for sure.
But if we're talking about music Green Day are just on another level. For the music composition, the songs structure, instrumentally, lyrically, from any point of view.

This isn't even a contest for me: RevRad

I'm a huge Blink fan and while I didn't hate California, it's Blink's weakest album. There are some good songs on there but most of them were really generic and boring to me. I've only heard RevRad twice and I really like it and think it has more substance than Blink's most recent output.

California is a huge radio-friendly record, RevRad is not (that much). It seems to me the bands had different approachs on making those: Blink wanted to go back to the headlines and Green Day wanted to make a simpler statement.

In short, California has catchy songs and works better for the present moment but RevRad may stay in memory as a better/simpler record for the future. I love them both though! They're great records.

California is a better pop punk album, but RevRad is a better Rock album, and a little bit better overall. Blink took no risks and just wanted to keep it a simple throw back, which is fine, I liked it. RevRad just feels more satisfying and something that will be a bit more memorable and have some longevity.

I see people talking about Sum 41 and NOFX a lot, but Yellowcard just released their last album and it blows those 2 out of the water, imo :)

Uhm, from what point of view RevRad would be simplier than California?

I think he means simple for Green Day following two concept albums and a trilogy :)
