  1. He has changed his vocal placement in order to accommodate the stresses of touring/aging. It's really not a big deal, and an absolute necessity if he wants to maintain his voice and be able to continue performing for years to come. Look at the amount of old rock stars (Billie's age and older) that literally cannot sing their music anymore. Some of them can't even sing when they lower the key. We should all be happy that Billie is taking measures (and obviously being VERY intentional about his choices) that will help preserve his voice and allow them to keep making music and performing live.

  3. But even if "Father To A Son" is a dedication to Joey, why should you care? Billie loves his son...Both his sons, but surely also Joey. He didn't start hating him after the Lydia story. And stop saying pedophile. Pedophiles are different things. Rapes are different things. And, to conclude, thank goodness Billie is a smart man and hasn't disowned his son. Thanks to all your hatred, they've become even closer!

  4. Minor correction, but it really isn't falsetto other than for about 10-15% of that section. He actually sings it in his mixed voice on the album track. Live, he has been leaning more towards falsetto because it is much more difficult to control your mixed voice in that setting. As far as Billie's shift in the appearance of his pitch (sounding like it has more depth back in 04), this really is due to him working on finding proper vocal placement to be able to not only hit the notes, but also stay on pitch. If he has been working with a vocal coach (or even if he just remembers a lot of what he learned doing AI on Bway), I can assure you that he is adjusting his vocal placement so that he doesn't blow out his voice. As somebody that does a good amount of musical theatre and has fronted bands, it isn't easy. The way I have had to shift my singing from only 5 years ago is pretty remarkable. If something is painful or you are having to strain, you are doing it wrong or it is simply out of your current range. It really is that easy. Fixing it, on the other hand, not so easy and takes work. I am amazed at how good Billie still sounds live (and I saw them at the Thursday Freemont CC show as well as WWWY). The work he has put in/is putting in is definitely working. Yes, he sounds different than he did 20 years ago. He's 20 years older. That shit happens. I can tell you that 75% of the acts at WWWY wish they could still sing their old music the way Billie can rock out GD's catalogue.

  5. Leading up to FOAMF, I remember thinking the New Year's Eve show (19 into 20) was on one hand legendary, and on the other hand, an example of a spiraling Billie. He was pretty gone by the end of that night if I remember correctly. The new record/tour was coined as a "party" record, and they all seemed to be projecting that pretty hard, but Billie, due to his addiction, would not able manage that and maintain any kind of control. It's a disease, and it is one hell of a monster. I kind of wonder if canceling that tour and covid didn't save him in a way, ya know? Right now, he seems in a very healthy place, and he is firing on all cylinders. I hope he has the support he needs to stay that way. Touring is a very tough life style to be sober, but others have done it, but you also see why so many slip up time and time again. I like sober Billie... Drunk Billie makes me cringe (sorry lived with an alcoholic, so sensitive subject!) I also like alive Billie, and he has a much better chance staying alive this way, right? We don't need to know the deets, that's all his business, and he'll share what he wants, when he wants, but as someone related to more than one addict, I wish him nothing but the best in his attempt to stay sober.

  6. All of this. I had to step away from them during the FOAMF era because things seemed really not good to me and honestly I was a bit scared to feel too close to them in that moment if things did go sideways. I understand that relapse is often part of addiction and that I maybe should’ve anticipated some backsliding at some point, but after having the absolute best years of my life as a fan during RevRad — which just felt like such a positive, happy, healthy time for the band — I think I was a bit in shock that we were headed back in a dark direction and that they were embracing the party theme so fully in interviews and photo shoots. Green Day has never been a “sex, drugs, and rock n roll” or “party album” type of band to me, and particularly after all they’d been through during the Trilogy era, I did NOT want to go back there again and relive that. Billie is one of my favorite humans. His life and his health are his business, but I want him to be happy and healthy and with us for a long long time and so yes, seeing him sober and seemingly doing very well recently really thrills me. And if he did actually go back to rehab recently, it makes me happy to know either he or his loved ones are keeping an eye on when maintenance is required.

  7. Rain falling from the stars is a poetic way of saying he’s up late at night and it’s raining. It’s a description of rain at night and all the darkness and sadness that implies. Don’t underestimate Billie’s songwriting

  9. Thanks this was great! Our first real interview about Saviors. Thank god for Rob Cavallo he recognized what was great and where they needed to push harder like always. Can’t wait for Father To A Son. Interesting comment too that he made about this time focusing more on the quality of the album than the tour. “An album is forever, a tour is one summer” Maybe as opposed to the last cycle where Hella Mega was definitely prioritized over FOAM. He couldn’t sound more excited about having new music out and for everyone to hear the album and that feels really good. And it wouldn’t be a Mike Dirnt interview without him saying “firing on all cylinders” and he did not disappoint 😂

  10. I think one of my favourite things about Green Day was how “accessible” they were. I genuinely always felt they were a band with a special connection with their fans. This whole ordeal is just so disappointing.

  11. I appreciate seeing the stream counts and chart positions I’m a nerd for that stuff. What I don’t care about is comparing them to other pop punk bands and making it appear as though Green Day are lacking in some way and aren’t one of the biggest rock legends in the world that’s still performing right now.

  12. FOAM felt like a lot of incomplete songs. Lots of “that’s good enough” songwriting. The good thing about ‘Saviors’ so far is that all the songs sound fully formed.

  14. I think the biggest issue the band constantly faces is, a lot of the community always expect an album full of "epic" songs when in reality you can only write what you can write and are inspired to write. Look Ma is a super catchy song which will feature heavily in the rotation for mine but we have been SOOOOOOO blessed with such a large catalogue of songs which I think can be overlooked at times.

  15. I took a look the other day at Green Day’s monthly listeners on Spotify and was kinda blown away at how many they have, though. They have 10 million+ more listeners than Blink 182, Maneskin, Foo Fighters, Metallica, Paramore, and The Killers. They also cleared Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, and The Rolling Stones by several million monthly listeners. Bands with a comparable amount of monthly listeners, just above Green Day, were Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Beatles. I have no idea who the most appropriate bands to measure them against are at this point (hence my wide range of subgenres here), but these are all rock or rock-adjacent bands I consider to be mainstream successes and I was kinda shocked that Green Day blows them all out of the water in terms of popularity on Spotify.

  16. I think he may always write about addiction, perhaps not regularly, but it’s something he has to deal with. I agree that he looks happy and healthy right now, long may that continue.

  17. I miss epic and experimental Green Day, a la 2000-2009; incredible decade of music. Maybe Saviors will match that description but based on the four songs we've heard, with the exception of "The American Dream is Killing Me", I don't think that will be the case. Happy and hoping to be proven wrong!

  20. After that era, it's widely regarded that the overall quality of album releases from the band took a huge nosedive. Every single album that has come out since then has had some kind of major con to it. You can't really say anything about that for anything that came out prior to Uno. (Revrad was the only real exception to this musically, but I think it still had a major flaw in that it's production quality and volume levels were a bit all over the place.) There is nothing wrong with the band realizing this, taking a step back and asking themselves what worked in the past and what didn't. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the band trying new things and going in new directions. However, FOAM was not the right way of doing that. The whole era gives of vibes of them trying to ask themselves "what's cool with the kids these days?" and then trying to do it, but completely misunderstanding what's actually cool with the kids these days and instead ruining what could have been a decent Foxboro Hot Tubs album by filling it with gimmicky sounds, cringe marketing and disgraceful album art. Their heart just wasn't in it and it shows in their tour, where they pretty much didn't play a single song from it the entire time. 21st Century Breakdown is my favourite album by them because they went in new directions, but they did it in the right way. You still get everything most people love about Green Day in that record, but it's also got their most diverse genre experimentation, high quality production and incredible art. There is an extremely well threaded balance of familiarity on that album while still offering completely new flavours of Green Day that we hadn't really heard before, and to top it all off, the album is so huge and ambitious that it not only has a song for every possible mood you could be in, but it also manages to make them all fit together in one complete package. Saviours doesn't seem to be a concept album or anywhere near as ambitious as 21st Century Breakdown was and that's fine, but so far unlike FOAM, it does at least feel inspired and that the band are actually proud of it. I am hoping it can achieve a similar balance of fresh and familiar, but with the same level production quality we have heard from it so far.

  21. Highly disagree. It’s been 10 years and it is pot. As a society we can’t walk on egg shells everywhere we go and with everyone we talk to. Part of being post-rehab is saying “no” in these situations. Alcohol and pot are part of society and while the respect towards people who do say “no” is rightfully and thankfully increasing, Billie will be in these situations for the rest of his life and can’t expect everyone to know his personal situation, especially in this case where it wasn’t made public.

  23. I mean, he was very open about the fact that he was drinking again during the FOAM era. In interviews he was basically like “I’m not sober anymore but I’m fine, let the good times roll!” He was also very drunk at a number of side project shows. I actually took a break from them during that time because it just seemed like things weren’t…great. But I’ve noticed in recent months that he appears to be sticking to non-alcoholic stuff and that makes me really happy. I know, he’s a grown man and I don’t know him and it’s his business, but I just really enjoy seeing him clear and sharp and healthy, and he seems like all those things right now. TL;DR I’m not surprised he’s talking about struggling with addiction on this album due to the vibes surrounding FOAM, but I’m also not presently worried about it because he seems to be doing well.

  24. The irony also isn't lost on me that their lead single from this album is about how nobody can afford the "American Dream" anymore.

  25. I don’t think either 1981 or OEB will be singles. I think the next single will be Father To A Son. They’ve been talking about it alongside the other two and it makes all three releases as different as they can be to have wide appeal

That increase probably comes from following LMNB on Spotify. LMNB on the other hand has a much lower start than TADIKM, probably to be expected since it's not the lead single

  28. Spotify streams for TADIKM Day 1 - 248k Day 2 - 487k (+239k) Day 3 - 663k (+176k) Day 4 - 1,078k (+415k) Day 5 - 1,313k (+235k) Spotify updated again. The performance has kept pretty consistent rather than just completely dropping off after the first couple days but I think it's clear that this isn't going to be a big hit for the band. Doubt it'll even surpass the streams of their other post-trilogy hits, namely Still Breathing & Bang Bang which are at 105m and 84m streams respectively. I can see it passing some of their lesser recent singles like Oh Yeah (33m), Father of All (38m) and maybe even Oh Love (47m) eventually. I think the band need to start doing proper promotion like interviews and TV performances to try and keep the song in the public's view for at least a little while

  29. I remember at the time he made that comment the impression I got from it was that he meant not from a songwriter’s perspective but from a listener’s perspective. He was saying how he doesn’t have the attention span to listen to a long song and doesn’t think anyone else does anymore. It still may have been bullshit but that was my takeaway. The other bullshit thing he was saying at the time which to me was more out of character and ridiculous was the whole thing about not wanting to hear feel good music, shut the fuck up about your feelings, rock music should make you feel bad, blah blah blah. Like wtf Billie all you do is write about your feelings. One interviewer called him out on that statement and his response was pretty funny. He said he can write about his feelings because “I feel awful” 😂 I laughed about it at the time but it was probably a pretty good glimpse into his mental state then.

  30. Clearly Billie needs to check with everyone in here before he writes a song so we can tell him which words he can and can not use. Collectively we all must be better song writers than him!

  35. I love TADIKM but I'm also an absolute sucker for 2004 Billie vocals. They just gave the songs more... idk... weight? As for why his voice changed, I suppose that's just ageing tbh. He sounds different live as well, if you compare live performances from then and in later years, it's quite noticeable. That's why I'm also a sucker for 2000-2005 live performances. But yeah, some people's voices just get deeper with age, others more high-pitched, some more nasal, others raspier etc. It's usually a combination of genetic and environmental factors. But anyhow, it's not something he or anyone else can control. As it stands, I'm still happy he's able to sing rather well. That's not a given. For instance, I love Dave Grohl and adore the Foos, but in recent years hearing that guy desperately and rather forcefully trying to extract the same strength of voice as in previous years is just kinda sad. Billie sometimes struggles, yes, but for a guy in his 50s with a past of severe alcohol (and substance) abuse he's doing pretty well all things considered. We can't turn back time, so let's just savour the present

  36. This line is one of my favorites in the song. Also hits home as I’ve seen my local community full of classic houses and history get bulldozed when rich people decide to move in, tear down these beautiful old homes, and build a new McMansion. It’s a trend in America.

  37. I still don’t get the hate for the TikTok line. Sure, it’s not subtle, but he’s not singing it from his perspective but from a conservative one. Also, TikTok is a massive cultural phenomenon that is here to stay. It’s not just going to go away like MySpace or something like that. And even if you dislike the line, that doesn’t make the song bad. Turning from “I like this“ to “this is terrible“ just because of one line of lyrics is honestly kind of immature.

  40. As a 25 year old who listens mainly to rock music, it's amazing how few young rock bands I know of and listen to. Almost all of the bands I listen to are older and have been well established successful bands for at least 15 years. We can talk about how the mainstream is essentially ignoring rock music, how the rock charts are trying to get us to believe pop songs are actually rock songs, but I think it's also on us as consumers of rock music to try to listen to stuff beyond Green Day and other bands from that time, expand our horizons. I'm sure there are an endless amount of great bands that are still relatively new that I just haven't bothered checking out TADIKM new peak positions No. 1 on US Mainstream Rock, from No. 3 last week No. 18 on US Adult Alternative Songs, from No. 21 last week LMNB hasn't charted on any charts, probably because radio stations are still choosing to play TADIKM and not LMNB

  41. The band has nothing to do with this. This topic is for the new album and new songs. So, please, stop, you and your crusade. It's not nice to see words like Pedophile thrown on a topic that should be about music. And if you really know what a Pedophile is, I think you should stop using such a word so lightly. Again, please stop.

  48. I've always been impressed with how good Billie still sounds. Different than he sounded when he was 22, sure, but A. he's older and B. he's singing different parts now, for lack of a better term. Even someone younger like Matt Bellamy has had his vocals go downward faster than Billie has. And then look at someone like Stevie Nicks, who totally blew her voice out in only a few years, both due to daily singing and substances. Billie's also had a couple of vocal changes, one from Warning to AI when he started sounding less congested, and then AI to 21CB when his voice got higher. All of which works.
