  2. EEEEEEE!!!! y'all the meet n greet was SO fast. The guys were so nice but didn't make conversation that much bc time me thinks. Billie said "you have my dog on your shirt!" I laughed and said he should bring the longshot back, we took the picture and I was out the room. I think they brought us to the pr room so the energy in there was so chaotic. Me and my brother were cheesing when we got back to our seats. He got a fist bump from Mike! The set was so fun! same ol songs but I was in need of a concert so I enjoyed it so much.

  3. That was fun. I think I'm allowed to say that Green Day played 4-5 songs for the fans in between takes. The filming was cool but those songs were the best bits. Billie threw lots of guitar picks with questions like: 'What's my favourite colour?' 'What number is on my mind right now?' 'What is my dog's name?' 'Who has the most spikes in their hair?' He didn't actually wait for anyone to answer. He just threw them at the first people he saw 😂 He also announced 'oof, my back' twice. Mike kept telling us we were killing it. The first time they played a song just for fun, Tre refused to play more when Billie asked because he didn't want to get sweaty. The barrier was mostly filled with hired actors but some fans got onto it in the centre and I got onto it past Mike, towards the end with some of the lovely ladies I met in the queue. There's such a small gap between the barrier and stage at the Palladium that I felt almost as close as I did when I was technically closer at stadiums. I can't believe I was still jumping at the end considering the jet lagged state I'm in 😂 If I remember more that I can share I will, but I need to sleep now.

  4. I loved their performance. To me, songs like Holiday and American Idiot say enough in their lyrics. It must have meant a lot for them to play this kind of gig in the bay area. They killed it and looked to be having fun. If people listen to Holiday and American Idiot and can’t see any political commentary, that’s their issue. Bad Bunny also approached things in a mature way. Didn’t make a message of hate, but instead of unity. Even said “God Bless America” and had the US flag first in the parade, going against people’s perceptions of him as an America-hater. I felt like they both took the high road and I appreciate that kind of maturity in an era of digs and insults that go nowhere and get nothing done.

  6. I can understand if people are upset at the length of the performance, it went quickly and we always want more BUT bear in mind it was a great performance Green Day got a huge amount of publicity and nobody could be unaware of their stance and many of their lyrics are very clear they performed at a show watched by millions which is always highly controlled and causes mass hysteria in the US if anything happens off script they backed the call for supporting unity Billie wore his Spanish necklace very prominently (sorry, I forget what it’s called) they appeared mature and rational in a time of ranting petulance in the US, they definitely have the moral high ground. Honestly they did a great job.

  7. There is an odd angle to this of fans putting all this responsibility on Green Day to do a certain thing. Like others were saying, maybe this was a dream moment for them and they wanted to embrace it and make it a positive memory.

  8. It's not even a question of potential repercussions in my opinion. What good would it have done if they had made a statement? All it would've done is generate press, upset MAGA people, attract a few new fans, and allow people who already like Green Day to pat themselves on the back. Not saying that's what the disappointed people wanted (they're overly optimistic about Green Day's influence, which isn't a bad thing because optimism takes strength in the current climate) but it's all it would've achieved. No-one would have changed their mind. It wouldn't have made anyone's lives better. We wouldn't even be having more discussions about anything that needs to be talked about - we'd just be talking about what Green Day said. That probably would've been about Trump or ICE, who are already getting the attention they deserve. There also would've been people accusing Green Day of being performative and I'd understand that too. I'd like to see Green Day using social media as well as their own shows to raise awareness of issues that aren't being talked about. That would be a lot more impactful than singing 'MAGA agenda' yet again.

  9. Its always like this, people make false hopes out of nothing and get hyped, just do be disappointed in the end, and then blame the origin (the band) Its not the oscars or grammys, its the nfl superbowl, getting badbunny and greenday to play at their show is surprising enough imo, and the boys took full advantage of it by performing with high rock energy (And keep in mind, this was not about greenday, it was about the mvp ceremony in the end)

  10. According to reddit this is up already for people in certain time zones. Heroes by David Bowie covered by Billie Joe featuring his son Jakob. So I assume it’s dropping everywhere Friday? https://www.reddit.com/r/greenday/s/kr2FMUIS6H

  12. I have to confess I've not kept up with the thread but I just wanted to say how excited I was to hear Billie scream "Welcome to the Bay! NFL 60!" I'm not from there but how cool is that for him and the guys coming from playing shitty venues feeling like there was possibly no hope to opening the Super Bowl on home soil. Absolutely amazing. I was so proud that was my band (figuratively of course )

  13. The way I see it the fact that Bad Bunny performed the show during this time when people, specifically Latino people, are being snatched by ICE, is what makes his performance so significant. He wanted to represent Puerto Rico and he did. And I am speaking as someone who is part Puerto Rican. The point of his show was we cannot be ignored, we won't be silenced, we are human. Plus his big message of love over hate is the most important. He did a great job. I don't listen to his music but there were some certified bops in there I need to add to my rotation. I've been reading all the thoughts about Green Day's performance and while I do wish they threw in some direct jabs to maga or ICE, I'm not surprised it didn't happen. This is a huge event and if they went off script, they'd get fined. It happened with MIA who flipped off the camera during Madonna's set. It caused an outage and a massive fine. And it was a blink and you miss it moment. I'm sure organizers are well aware of where green Day stands and probably had some stipulations for them. Either way I'm always thrilled to see the boys. It was a great performance. Hell, I'm happy they did American Idiot because that songs still shakes conservative folks to their core. And I'm not sure why people are shocked that they got censored....it's the FCC....that's what they do. Who knows maybe Green Day wants to do the half time show some day so they didn't want to jeopardize their chance. I don't really care. I'm just happy I got to see my favorite band at a huge event and they kicked butt. Any performance that gets the masses talking about them again is amazing. Side note: my friend said he overheard a 12 year old and his dad question who green day was. But when they started playing the kid said oh I know this song! I like it! Green Day still resonating with new fans ❣️

  16. I agree with @solongfromthestars, I think even if they had gone up there and just given a political rant for 6 minutes, nothing would have changed, except that we would be patting ourselves in the back for how anti-Trump/anti-ICE our favorite band is. Much less would anything happen because he sings "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda". I don't see the incomplete songs as self-censorship @Hermione, I think they just tried to make a medley out of some of their most famous songs, that musically made sense, that would allow people to recognize the songs, and that highlighted the power of each song. (And I don't think choosing Holiday over Basket Case for instance, was an unintentional choice). It's not easy to pack a lot in under 5 minutes, to do it right, and to make it sound great. And I think we know how much more political the songs could have been if they had been played in their entirety, because we know those songs by heart and know what was left out. But if you forget about that for a second you realize that what was sung already packs a huge political message. Just like the mere fact that Green Day, with its well documented criticism of Trump and Republicans that came before him, singing on that stage is a political statement. I also don't see how Bad Bunny's set was more powerful? I think his set was great, but he had more time, budget, and staging. But his show was also a medley, none of the songs were sung in their entirety, the lyrics were the original lyrics and the rhythms were the ones from the original songs, a lot of the stage decorations were mimicking his album cover or music videos. He couldn't have sung anything in English because he doesn't have any songs in English. So there was nothing there that we hadn't heard or seen before. So what's the special political statement there? The only thing he said that I thought was quite powerful and that is not straight out of one of his songs (and most American folks seem to have missed it because they missed the keyword in Spanish) was when he said "god bless America" and started mentioning a bunch of countries, he actually said "god bless American, whether it is ("sea" in Spanish) Chile, Argentina...." and went off to list every single country in the whole continent. That was nice to see, since the US has basically appropriated "America" just for themselves. I think perhaps you feel Bad Bunny's set was way more political because you are not as familiar with his music, so having a salsa band playing or these type of things highlighting Latino culture might seem like something extraordinary he hadn't done before? If that is the case, then for people not familiar with Green Day, hearing "don't wanna be an American Idiot" in the super bowl stage might have seemed just as punk. On the other hand, I also don't think that they played it safe not to draw attention from Bad Bunny. I just think they wanted to pack as much power in 5 minutes as they could, end of story. Bad Bunny is the biggest artist in the world right now, and has been a few times before in the last 6 years or so. I don't think there's a lot Green Day could have done that would have deflected the attention from Bad Bunny. As to "why bother if they're not gonna say anything": Because they are musicians. I guess playing at the Super Bowl, and so close to home, must have been super exciting opportunity for them, beyond how much money they would get or what political message they could send. Would someone here not take their dream job just because they cannot wear a "fuck ICE" shirt to work? So yes, maybe it was just to tick a career box, but what's wrong with that? If they were not career driven half of us would probably never heard of them. Probably only @Dingle and some bay area folks would know them

  18. "Information age of hysteria, It's calling out to idiot America" - that line sung into the silence of that big stadium hit on a completely different level. I think they have made their message pretty much clear. It is in their lyrics, it always has been.

  30. I have a lovely Polish gentleman painting the outside of my house. He came in to the kitchen, saw my Saviors listening party poster and said, “Green Day, great band, one of my favourites”. We talk music every day and he showed me some pics from a friend of his taken in 1991 when green Day first went to Poland.

  32. I don't even do GDA because of Green Day anymore. I'm not on any other fansites or pages. I do it just because I value the sites and the community so much. GDA and especially GDC were my 'places' when I was growing up, in the same way Gilman was to Green Day. That probably sounds sad but it's just how it was for the people who grew up alongside the dawn of the internet, and honestly, I'm one of many people who has met real life friends through GDC so it's not like it isn't actually 'real life.' I've felt like throwing in the towel many times but I'm glad I haven't. It's very rewarding to see the sites making a comeback and to hear from others like me who are glad to see it. I won't pretend I can keep up with the other fansites when it comes to news because I can't, but for me, GDA has always been more than news anyway - it's about the community, info and fun anecdotes that aren't found anywhere else. I'll carry on doing my best for the foreseeable future ☺️

  33. Yeah this is a big part of what helped me decide to try and do more. There are some great communities out there, but reading comments on social media is depressing. It’s hard on a platform like that where you can’t moderate like you can on a forum. There are people doing good things out there, but I like the idea of something more tangible than just a feed to scroll past.

  34. I managed to get it earlier so... Stay Young is beautiful even just for the sentiment of its title and the repeating of the line throughout choruses. Even though it's basically again the same old four chords, it has something in the melodies and the solo not typical for Green Day, in a good way. It's really melancholic and sentimental. It's a Whatshername type song, both in tempo and style. A good melodic alternative rock song. It's definitely my favorite out of the new ones. Fuck Off is basically Murder City but with cringey lyrics. Still kind of fun, but nothing compared to bitter F.O.D. or more extremely Take Back and Platypus Underdog is musically a short classic 90s style Green Day song with some Trilogy vibes. Lyrics are also pretty cringey and almost AI ish. It's the only one that has a different production and mix, especially with the way drums are mixed. Also noted that it's the only song produced by Green Day only. And just like I thought it would be, Suzy Chapstick and Father To A Son are just an acoustic/alternate mixes of the album versions. So just acoustic guitars, backing vocals, some solos and strings are in there. But they're still pretty nice. Weirdly, booklet says that all of the new songs were mixed by Chris Dugan, even though they sound like they were mixed by CLA in the same batch with the album (except the Underdog). Go figure It's interesting how, after recently listening to 21st Century Breakdown in full couple of times and reliving those lyrics, the literality of some of those new ones seem really basic and kind of lazy in a lot of ways. It's kind of hard to comprehend that it's the same band. On the other hand, they are still my absolutely favorite no1 band and it still excites me to the core when new releases are out. Green Day is my home and safety and will always be ❤️ btw. there's a cool collage of photos from the Saviors tour in the inside of the digipack 😊

  35. These are all from Billie. The American Dream Is Killing Me: 'That song is more about being a stressed-out American. Our politics are so divided and polarized right now. We had an insurrection. We have homeless people in the street. We have so many issues, and they come onto your algorithm feed at such a pace. It just stresses you out, the anxiety of being an American and how it becomes so overwhelming. I think it was easier to satirize George Bush because we didn’t have social media. It was before all the tech bros came in. Now you have these billionaires who would rather shoot a rocket into space than deal with the infrastructure we have here.' (Vulture, 2024) One Eyed Bastard: ‘Lyrically, I was just reflecting on bad times in life. That’s the thing about nostalgia, sometimes you think, “That was an awful time.” Everybody’s got that ugly place in their life where they have to deal with ugly thoughts – it could be like revenge or whatever. Thankfully, I have an outlet in songwriting.’ (Rolling Stone, January 2024) Dilemma: 'That’s one of my favourite songs on the record. I think it really cuts to the core of drug addiction, alcohol addiction and mental health. The first line is, "Welcome to my problems / It’s not an invitation." It almost sounds like Facebook within itself. It’s like, "Come feel sorry for me, come feel my pain." But, you know, I don’t have Facebook or Twitter, so I just do it in songs to where I think with melody it becomes more relatable, and people can interpret it in the different ways they want. It could be me just joking, but it could be dead fucking serious, too.' (Kerrang, 2024) Bobby Sox: ‘Bobby Sox was originally about just sitting on the sofa or going to a movie with my missus. It was sort of more about our relationship, but I flipped the script a little bit with the second chorus where it goes into "do you wanna be my boyfriend?" So I sort of flipped the gender thing before on Basket Case, but this one gives it a whole new level. Sort of turns the song into a queer anthem.’ (SiriusXM, 2024) Suzie Chapstick: ‘Suzie Chapstick could be a song about what your friends are up to lately, you haven't seen in years, looking on Instagram... to see how other people's lives are doing, and we're all alive and doing well together, so…’ (SiriusXM, 2024) Strange Days Are Here to Stay: 'There’s one line that says, "Ever since Bowie died, it hasn’t been the same." That’s always kind of stuck with me. That was the beginning of 2016, and then it seemed like when the Starman left this Earth, all the mad men came in and started to destroy everything.' (Kerrang, 2024) Living in the '20s: 'Living In The ‘20s is like we are living in The Upside Down. My country is supposed to be the United States of America but there’s no unity at all. And so, I observe and I report what I see. And strange days are here to stay.' (Kerrang, 2024) Father to a Son: 'It's heavy. I was only 22 years old when I became a dad and time has passed, and they’ve become the young men that they are now. I wanted a moment like Wake Me Up When September Ends, which is a song about my father, being a son. But the other side of the coin is me being a father to my sons and hoping that I did something good. I’m saying I’m going to ride shotgun as close to my sons as I possibly can, to try to do the best I can. And thankfully, I have a really, really, good relationship with both.' Father to a Son: 'I dedicated the song to my two sons, who are now 28 and 25 years old. I wrote Wake Me Up When September Ends about my father twenty years ago. I was 10 when he died. Then I became a father myself at an early age and simply didn’t know what I was doing, what was expected of me. I did my best and was always there as these babies became boys, these boys became young men.' I don't remember where the Father to a Son ones came from... anyone have any idea?

  36. To me it sounds like a common topic recently which is how he feels with his on again off again up and down struggle with a harmful habit. Reach for a knife, let it go, live it up, give up, it’s a curse, the worst, mama raised a bomb.. it’s in his nature to be a hellion but he fights against it. A couple of images I love are “useless as a … crippled ballerina” and “waiting on the sun like a star that’s blowing up”. It’s like another way of describing himself as a dead man walking. Like disaster has already struck but he doesn’t know it yet. He might write a lot about a short list of themes but no one captures the human condition and describes feelings in a simple yet relatable and emotional way like he does. He somehow always avoids sounding too self indulgent or self pitying. Like with Smash It Like Belushi the message is when you’re feeling this way just keep your head down keep going and rip shit up. It’s empowering 💚

  37. I feel we're overthinking this too much. I don't think they had to negotiate for the NFL to let them play AI and Holiday. I think NFL didn't care which songs they played, so long as they were hits that most people would recognize. With how much hype there was about it on the internet, I thought their set was gonna be longer. But given the time constraints, a medley of their hits was the only possible option. And unless I missed something, they only did Good Riddance + AI songs, disregarding other hits like Basket Case and WICA that many people would have also recognized, so they did choose to focus on some very political songs. I too am a bit disappointed by the lack of the MAGA line, but it was a medley, we didn't even get the original line of the song. Already going on stage and singing "don't wanna be an American idiot" in front of that audience is a statement. Just like Bad Bunny singing in Spanish is a statement, regardless of what the lyrics are saying (short run through what his songs were about in the spoiler below, if anyone is curious)

The incredible production, the wide variety of instruments and arrangements, Billie Joe's vocal range, etc etc etc. An unbelievable record start to finish. How did that come to be? The band feeling adventurous after American Idiot? Warner/Reprise asking them for an epic follow up to American Idiot? Butch Vig's touch?

  45. 👏👏👏 Welcome back and thank you for all the hard work. GDA was once a great reference resource (still is for tour dates) and I know it will be again. The occasional support and interaction of the Green Day team made this place unique too. Fan message boards were my first introduction to the internet way back when and I still love having a place just for fans to connect and interact without all the other bullshit of scams, bots and trolls. I recently deleted my Facebook and backed away from the cesspool of most social media and I’ve been focusing back on the fan and special interest forum formats I once loved through Reddit and here. Still the best.

  46. Breaking news: Professional musicians want to make money! There’s virtually no money in streaming, which is why physical media is pushed so hard by record labels today. There’s a deluxe edition of most albums these days along with tons of vinyl variants for a reason. It’s a standard industry practice at this point. Anyway, I’ve been around Green Day long enough to know a lot of their b-sides are just okay. And that’s fine. They’re just very good at curating what goes on their main albums. I’ll never be mad at getting more Green Day than I expected.
