  1. Kind of lame to play a country that oppresses LGBT+ and women to that extent and is built on slave labour tbh. If nothing else it seems like a terrible PR move

  2. Garbage opinion, both of those songs are nice.

  3. Does nobody have an issue with the fact that they are playing a country where Homosexually is a criminal offence ? Being homosexual is officially prohibited in the UAE which Dubai is a part of. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_the_United_Arab_Emirates#:~:text=Both civil law and sharia, the partner or the guardian. I am a bit disappointed by this one. Unless Green Day use this as a platform to advocate for equality .

  7. This is admittedly a tricky matter, given how there are various degrees to this. They also played in Thailand and Venezuela in 2010, both authoritarian regimes at the time with a variety of human rights violations and press censorship to boast. In fact, if we go down that rabbit hole, the whole of South America is a bit tricky on that front. It's not just sun, cocktails and party beaches down there. Just look at abortion rights, political/gang violence, corruption etc. etc. I still think playing in South America is on the whole justified, but it's hard to decide where to draw the line. Granted, the state of the UAE is a particularly vile example of flagrant human rights violations, right up there with the likes of Saudi Arabia and Qatar (boo FIFA). It's unthinkable that we should still have countries in 2024 that allow for public executions, merely for one's sexuality, sometimes even by stoning, but here we are... I suppose the only worse optics the band could have achieved is by playing in Israel or Russia right now. But I agree, as a headline this makes me squirm, if nothing else. In general I'm honestly quite disgusted by how both oil-state airlines and Dubai are seemingly successfully marketing themselves to western holiday-goers. Under the glossy facade they're still horribly repressive and unequal regimes with few to no minority rights. Not to mention the absurdity of having a city with skyscrapers, huge swimming pools, artificial beaches and even an indoor skiing resort, erected in the middle of the Arabian desert, an area otherwise plagued by severe poverty, famine and drought. The old fishing village is actually quite interesting and has some history, but all the flashy bits built around it over the years, to attract business and tourists feel vapid and soulless, almost like a disneyland capitalist fever dream.

  13. I've started scheduling stories on the GDA Instagram that are throwbacks to gigs played on that day however many years ago. If I'm going to all that effort, I might as well post this stuff here as well. However! I'm only focusing on gigs (not album releases or anything) and I'm very likely to forget to post here anyway, so if you remember anything that happened on a certain day years ago (or if you feel like copy/pasting from the GDA Instagram), please contribute! Even stuff like music video releases and chart positions on certain days would be interesting to look back on. So, on this day (16 April) 19 years ago (2005), Green Day played in Orlando, FL. 11 years ago (2013), they played the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. And 9 years ago (2015), they played the House of Blues in Cleveland before their Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction. Yes, I did get the year wrong on Instagram. Enjoy looking back at what our favourite band have been up to!

  14. I think what I’m struggling with is this: During the Saviors promo, it was brought up in multiple interviews how well they took care of Pansy Division in the 90s and refused to play venues that wouldn’t let Pansy Division play, too. They talked a lot about the values they learned at Gilman, primarily about equality. That means something to me and is a huge point of pride for me in being a fan, as are all their progressive views and actions. That might not factor into why others are a fan and that’s totally fine, but it does for me. It is hard for me to reconcile them refusing to play a venue that won’t let a queer band open for them with now playing in a destination where queer people cannot legally exist. No, citizens are not their government, but you could argue that back in the 90s, not all people they refused to play for were homophobic — the band refused in principle, I’m sure fully knowing that some good people were missing out on a show because of it. As @MillenniumFan pointed out in their very thoughtful post, this isn’t the first time they’ve played in a problematic place, and where to draw the line here is difficult. But right now, playing in Dubai just feels like a particularly poor and hypocritical choice.

  15. Six years ago today (24 April 2018), The Longshot played The Wayfarer in Costa Mesa. 13 years ago (24 April 2011), the American Idiot musical ended its run on Broadway and Green Day played after the final performance. Some people have probably already read my recap on my personal blog, but I've just transferred it to GDA if you haven't read it yet. More photos: 22 years ago (24 April 2002), Green Day played in Inglewood, CA on the Pop Disaster Tour. 23 years ago (24 April 2001), they appeared on Musique Plus in Montreal to talk about Waiting. And 31 years ago (24 April 1993), Green Day played the Revolver Club in Madrid.

  16. Another pretty special one today. 14 years ago (22 April 2010), American Idiot opened on Broadway. Fun fact: this photo is of the action that inspired the name "Fuck Time." “One of the actors from the American Idiot musical, Theo Stockman, called himself the ‘King of Fuck.' Before every performance the cast got into a circle and shouted: 'One, two, three, it’s fuck time!’ So I named a song after it. We played it as the Foxboro Hot Tubs at Don Hill’s and the song should have stayed there... but then we realised we shouldn’t give It’s Fuck Time away to our alter-ego, but use it for Green Day!” – Billie Joe More photos from the opening night:

  18. Yeah it's nothing against anyone going to the show/ordinary residents of the country. But they're not going to UAE out of all the many countries they're not playing on this tour to play an expo "for the fans", it's for money.

  20. Six years ago today (26 April 2018), The Longshot played the Redwood Bar in LA. More photos: 23 years ago (26 April 2001), Green Day performed Waiting and Platypus on the Howard Stern show. On the same day (26 April 2001), Green Day also played Waiting on the David Letterman Show. "It's great that we have a pain management doctor in the audience because every time on the show, the drummer – who is unstable – does something strange and hurts himself. The last time he was here, he leapt off the drum platform and hit the deck. We took him to the hospital. For three days, it knocked the wind out of him." – David Letterman 33 years ago (26 April 1991), Green Day drove 37 hours to play in Sioux Falls, SD. "[Adrienne] showed up in Sioux Falls, and then she just grabbed me. And she said, 'Billie Joe?' And I turned around, and I was just – I had to remember what she looked like, because it just didn't register at first. I remembered her voice from the phone. She looked at her friend and goes, 'he doesn't remember me.' I felt like the biggest tool at that second." – Billie Joe

  24. On this day 6 years ago (5 May 2018), The Longshot played in Phoenix, AZ. Thanks to Rumpel for finding Billie's selfie from that show (the only decent photo) because I've hardly saved anything from 2017 onwards. I unfollowed Longshot a while ago and now I can't get back in to look for photos for this project. 7 years ago (5 May 2017), Green Day played in Melbourne, Australia on the Revolution Radio Tour. That girl in the centre makes the whole photo. More photos: 15 years ago, they played a short set on In Session With Zane Lowe at Maida Vale Studios. I actually remember listening to this on the radio. I got the date wrong and listened to the whole show that day just in case, so I was very excited when Green Day were actually on the following week. It was great. I've still got the cassette I recorded it on somewhere. "That one just fell out of our bums." – Tre on the Foxboro Hot Tubs "eBay!" – Billie Joe when Zane Lowe asked if he could keep his promo CD (he's actually a huge Green Day fan, so I doubt it ended up on eBay) More photos: 19 years ago, Green Day played in Columbus on the American Idiot Tour. I don't have any photos of the show, but this photoshoot was done that day. 31 years ago (5 May 1993), they played in Wigan, England. "We're Green Day, but it's time to change the pace a little bit. We're Green Grass." — Tré Cool "Tré has broken his toe, so he can't do ballet for you this evening." — Billie Joe (however, the audience member they called up to "do ballet" was unsatisfactory, so Tre did some anyway) More photos 32 years ago (5 May 1992), Green Day played the Beacon Hill Bandshell in Victoria, Canada. There are more of these fab photos taken by Sarah Kramer on Instagram And finally, 34 years ago (5 May 1990), Green Day played one of their many shows at 924 Gilman Street.

More photos: And 31 years ago yesterday (27 April 1993), they played in Aviles, Spain. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19 years ago today (28 April 2005), they played the Cumberland Civic Center in Portland, ME. Billie Joe: Have you ever had sex? Kid who got onstage: No. Billie Joe: You will tonight. Video of Basket Case at this show: 22 years ago (28 April 2002), Green Day played in Wheatland, CA on the Pop Disaster Tour. More photos: 14 years ago (23 April 2010), the Foxboro Hot Tubs played at Don Hill's in NYC. I was also looking at some of those setlists the other day and laughed at them playing Fuck Time eight times at the Bowery Electric, but I'd forgotten they outdid that at Don Hill's with nine Fuck Times. 34. Yeah this looks like what could possibly be their tour setlist this summer, dookie, some saviors, ai I could imagine they could switch some songs from show to show, and according to setlistfm it was a 2h10min show, so still 10minutes they could play longer for the european festivals Please keep fancy sauce as closing song And i know dookie and ai in full is epic, but i hope the next tour will have some more love for songs they rarely play live (trilogy songs pleeeeease)

  36. On this day (17 April) 26 years ago, Green Day played Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. "Who's from the West Bay? I bet you people don't even know you're in the WEST Bay. Did you even know there WAS a Bay?" – Mike "How many people live in San fucking Francisco? You suck!" – Billie The Longshot played Thee Parkside in San Francisco on this day 6 years ago. A nice quote from that show: “I have so much gratitude and so much love getting to play music in front of people for so many years.” And an amusing one: “We’re gonna do this thing where we pretend to walk off and walk back on.”

Interviewer: Are you doing anything for Mother's Day? I just FedEx'd my mom my card. Tre: Me too. FedEx'd your mom. If you want to find out how Tre got his mouth taped shut, you can watch the show on YouTube. Billie also played Good Riddance on the Howard Stern Show that day.

  42. I really hope they don't pull a Matty Healy and use their show to advocate because it won't actually change anything – the local LGBTQ+ community will just suffer for it. If we're serious about forcing change through boycotting, the whole world needs to work closely with the local community to do it. Until that happens, one band refusing to play there won't help (again, it'll probably just do more harm than good), and I don't see why the decent local people should be deprived of enjoyment because the laws suck.

  43. On this day 14 years ago (25 April 2010), the Foxboro Hot Tubs played the Bowery Electric in NYC. This was the one with eight Fuck Times and eight Stop Drop and Rolls. Billie also broke his teeth on a beer bottle right after having dental work done, if I remember correctly. More photos: 19 years ago (25 April 2005), Green Day played the Pepsi Arena in Albany, NY. 22 years ago (25 April 2002), they played in Chula Vista on the Pop Disaster Tour.
