Venus is a place that's literally "out of this world", different and strange. It's also considered to represent female qualities and female sexuality. So it's a pretty appropriate word to represent her wild lifestyle (as opposed to the conventional lifestyle represented by "Jesus"). If someone doesn't know about the Kool Aid thing too bad , there's always going to be someone who doesn't get any reference, hopefully the more different references people hear the more they'll learn. There's also the fact that it's a parody of old 60s songs that were totally about sex but would only hint at it and never say so explicitly, in this song it's flipped around to be completely explicit. I think whether you can relate to that more real side of it or not the humour of that catchy old fashioned rhythm paired with such explicit lyrics can still be appreciated (is by me anyway ). Or possibly because you've mentioned those two things a million or so times.

Both SWTRLF and Know Your Enemy work well live because they're up tempo and easy to shout along with. They add energy to the show. My friend and I were discussing last night Billie's voice on slow songs vs. his voice on the faster songs. And while we both agreed that his voice was supremely underrated when singing without his snarl, we felt that GD's (and Billie's) strength is in bringing a certain energy to their music. With Dookie it was a jaded confusion that was upbeat and grabbed your attention. Insomniac was a middle finger to the world. American Idiot was a middle finger to America. And so on. Whatever the message, it was delivered through this usually upbeat rhythm and Billie's signature snarls. Obviously when they slow it down GD can do some wonderful things. But think about songs like WMUWSE or Boulevard of Broken Dreams, they start slow but the tempo builds with the emotion to culminate in this explosion of energy. It really comes through live.

Relating to the "Haushinka" convo a few lines back, in addition to its being one of their best songs for drums it's also one of their best for guitar, vocal harmonies and all-around emotion. The bridge is my favorite moment of any Green Day song ever. Bar none.

When you first meet the person you love, it is easy to spend time together. There is a raw passion that comes easily. As you've been together for 20+ years, it gets harder and harder to find that passion. You are more concerned with getting the laundry done. To me this song is about rekindling that passion.

AI and Insomniac are pure gold. And I think 21CB has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard (See signature). Then there are good lyrics scattered through the rest of their catalog, some Billie could have accidentally backed in to but there is just too much evidence of him being a great lyricist

It does kind of capture the sentiments of spending days with relatives.

You're looking at the wrong side of the issue. An A major chord will always be an A major chord. But chord progressions/rhythm/colors can't affect the way I feel the song, they can't decide whether I like it or not. You can create the shittiest and dumbest piece of music that's ever been heard on this planet, but someone, somewhere, may like it and feel it as something good. As long as there is one human being liking something, you can't say that thing is universally shite. That's subjectivity.

The painfully obvious reason the trilogy gets talked about so much is because it is their most recent work and contains 37 songs. That's why it comes up the most and that's why Ceadog and others (me included) have stated their disdain for different aspects of it numerous times. There's nothing else to it. Also you can't always hide behind "subjectivity" when discussing music. You can't view chord progressions/notes in a subjective way.

That wasn't so much a Green Day compliment rather than an attempt at invalidating other people's music interests and calling some fans annoying for not liking the same things you like. Hardly a positive post.

A subjective opinion about a song is as far from hard evidence as there is. He has nothing better to do To fill in an awkward pause.

Well I think looking up the lyrics and trying to find hidden messages and metaphors is the best part of analyzing a song. You're able to emphatize with the songwriter and that process just makes the song yours .

I don't mind the bridge part. It doesn't make the song any worse and is rather interesting. One of the few surprising moments of Dos.

If saying that the album cannot be declared utter shite due to subjectivity existing is defending, then be so. Even if musically I don't enjoy some of the tracks on trilogy, most of them have smart lyrics. And just because I/you/whoever else think the songs suck, it doesn't mean that's a definite decision for everyone else too. (aka your opinion doesn't make something be (officially declared) a piece of shit.)

Pretty sure it is standard tuning, but 1/2 step down would have maybe helped Billie Joe to reach the highest notes more easily

Since we were talking about lyrics in the trilogy, My absolute least favorite line in DRB is "What the fuck does ok stand for" Its the most out of place line in the whole damn thing

I don't give two shits about hidden meanings if something sounds stupid like almost all his writing in trilogy and especially Dos it's bullshit. Also even Billie said that a song like Nuclear Family is just words he wrote it doesn't really mean anything. So you're wrong.

The song would end perfectly without it. Well, even given the situation where they thought having that bridge was vital (like, creating an interesting structure, intriguing the listener, etc. - whatever their reason was).... then, alright, have the bridge, but not the vocal part of those "ohhhhs". They sound terrible in my opinion. Too dramatic and completely unnecessary.
