It’s the Super Bowl…they said mindfuck America…and played American Idiot with a bunch of NFL Super Bowl MVP’s on stage jumping up and done to it that’s punk in of itself!! They said fuck…they did a melody…what do people want them to do?!?! It’s watched by millions…they didn’t divide or say anything maybe they were looking for unity either way they sounded great they played holiday and AI to open the Super Bowl which is wild! Wish the played TADIKM and or When I Come Around or Basket Case instead of Blvd but I get it it’s their biggest song but opening up the Super Bowl isn’t the time to take attention away from the event itself watch by everyone kids adults families and people of all sides. Also even if they did say something it would have been bleeped. Plus maybe they will play the halftime show soon now eventually…maybe just maybe they come out with bad bunny for a bit never know?! But they fact the opened the Super Bowl played AI and holiday and said mImdfuck America is wild unto itself. People who are disappointed need to calm down it’s entertainment and a huge thing to do. They stilL chose to end with AI which again is fascinating. Can’t please everyone

No, I think most of us are kind of stunned that he didn't say anything. I'm not angered by it, just shocked. A bit nonplussed at what kept him from saying something.

My friends were on their breaks when I came in and I hyped them up mentioning the possibility of "MAGA agenda" so I felt like I made things worse because they were disappointed 😂 I was a little bummed they didn't do anything to piss anyone off, but let's not forgot that they were special enough to have millions of eyeballs on them for the biggest media event of the year. I'm just happy to see that (and I hope it means the NFL will keep them in mind for the big show in future years)!

We were all expecting the MAGA agenda line that didn't come but this performance wasn't apolitical. American Idiot and Holiday are political statements themselves and they played these songs on the most watched event of the USA (and I'm surprised NFL let them play these songs). I also wish they did more, but this wasn't nothing

cmon guys... american idiot performed on letterman, billie constantly posting left-wing stuff on social media, years of speaking out against the political climate at stadiums, "im not part of a maga agenda" on dick clarks nye, and thats scratching the surface... i guess all of that is out the window?

And I don’t need celebrities to tell me what my politics should be, but when you’re band like Green Day and you play it this safe and allow yourself to be that censored, I’m gonna be disappointed. I know expectations were far too high for them but for them just plop some medley that doesn’t even showcase why those songs are so great (the cutting of holiday was truly mind blowing to me). When those came out in the Bush era it was edgy and radical. Now, there’s a reason they are played on a big stage like this, they aren’t that radical anymore. Most celebs are anti Trump. Basically, playing those songs in 2004 was way more of a statement and that they felt like in 2026 they can’t say it for some weird reason is wild to me. No one who would be offended that they played AI as is, would ever be into Green Day anyways. I had so many people talk to me leading up to this about this performance. They would’ve added fans if they had just played them as is or added the maga line. Missing the moment really happened. which honestly, besides a lyric change here or there this band hasn’t really been that political for awhile.

I suppose this is where I'm at emotionally. Not really outraged per se, but surprised. I was definitely expecting at least a throw-away anti Trump/MAGA line or something.

Finalllllyy all caught up reading this thread . I wish I was on here while it was happening, but I did see it. I am quite surprised when he played American Idiot, he didn't add the MAGA line. Nothing was that political from what I saw, and I thought for sure he'd say something. The website crashed for a moment, I think because of how many people are on here.

I will say, I had more friends in my life text me leading up to this performance, expressing their hopes Green Day would say something, so there was definitely some hopes from non-fans for some kind of statement. Hey, maybe they'll show up and do something with Bad Bunny at halftime?

Didn’t rise to the occasion at all. I’ll always appreciate them for how they speak up about things, but the huge disappointment from their fanbase and the Reddit meltdown is well deserved. I can’t defend them.
